Georgia International Horse Park in Conyers celebrates 20 years
In the 20 years since Georgia hosted the Centennial Olympic Games, few venues constructed to host the world's elite athletes are still in use as intended. Take, for example, Centennial Olympic Stadium. Built in downtown Atlanta to host the opening and closing ceremonies of the games, as well as several athletic events, the stadium was later converted for use by the Atlanta Braves baseball team and renamed Turner Field. The Braves are playing their last season there, and will leave the stadium to its third incarnation as a college athletic facility.
The Georgia International Horse Park in Conyers has no such story to tell. Built to host Olympic equestrian events and the first-ever Olympic mountain bike competition, the 20-year-old park has stayed true to its roots.
"We host around 200 events a year, and 65 to 70 of them are equestrian. Equestrian events remain our bread and butter here," said Jennifer Bexley, director of the 1,400-acre park.
Anywhere from 500,000 to 750,000 people a year participate in events at the park, including color runs, mud runs and concerts, Bexley said. Few weekends pass without some variety of organized events happening at the park, from festivals and athletic competitions to weddings and family reunions.
The park had its genesis in a search for economical ways to expand the Conyers and Rockdale County wastewater treatment system. In the late 1980s, the City of Conyers identified the tract that would become the park as a viable one for land application, which allows treated wastewater to be

Founded in 1807 as Sylvania, the settlement at Round Oak later took the name of a massive oak tree where Native Americans once gathered for their pow-wows. A whistle stop on the rail line connecting Macon and Monticello, Round Oak is said to have lost its namesake tree to a leaky water tower erected to serve the trains that passed through. More recently, the unincorporated town was home to R&B singer Otis Redding, who settled there with his family on a 300-acre ranch in 1965, two years before his death in a plane crash. Today a stop at the crossroads of the old and new alignments of Georgia Hwy. 11 includes a visitors' center developed at the site of an old general store, and an "Ancestor's Garden" planted with cuttings taken from the homesteads of Round Oak's founding families.

Farmers unite to find new markets: Middle Georgia Growers Co-op wants to share its bounty
By Amy H. Carter
Editor
The difference in their ages constitutes a solid half-century. The wingspan covered by their political views is so vast as to be immeasurable in a single sitting. What could they possibly have in common? They farm.
From friendly competitors to business partners, several Middle Georgia growers are organizing themselves in hopes of making the productive heartland of the state a food hub for the other regions, particularly the Atlanta Metro area.
The founding members of the Middle Georgia Grower's Cooperative have started an online fundraising campaign to raise at least $10,000 for the purchase of a delivery truck, coolers and freezers and to cover administrative expenses.
"Farming has always been a poor man's job," said founding member Julia Asherman, an art school graduate who owns Rag & Frass Farm in
Jeffersonville. "The problem in our food system is that farmers are not valued as they should be."
The founding members of the co-op represent six family farms. Scattered around the largely undeveloped fringe of the greater Macon area, they have infinite room and desire to expand their farming operations. They already cover every protein source and every produce variety, even though not one farmer among them currently has more than 25 acres under active cultivation or management.
The growers represented by this fledgling co-op have established markets throughout central Georgia and beyond, but they also have excess. Rather than watch it go to waste, they're banding together
See FARMERS UNITE, page 12
Signs on the processing shed at The Little Farm seem to sum up the philosophy of the cooperative's members, who are working to ensure the success of their own farms and the
future of farming in middle Georgia.

Guest Column: Celebrate National Dairy Month in June
By Caroline Roper
While June may symbolize the start of summer across the country, to Georgia dairy farm families it symbolizes something else National Dairy Month.
Join Georgia dairy farm families and the American Dairy Association of Georgia as we celebrate 79 years of June Dairy Month and encourage consumers to "get more with milk." This June, the dairy association of Georgia will honor the accomplishments of more than 220 dairy farm families across the state who are dedicated to dairy by sharing their stories of producing wholesome, nutritious dairy foods for consumers. Dairy farming plays an important role in the landscape of Georgia agriculture. Georgia is one of the Southeast's leading dairy producing states, despite having fewer dairies than at least four other states in our region. Georgia has 220 licensed dairy operations for a total of about 83,000 cows. Those cows produced more than 209 million gallons of milk last year, which comes out to more than 1.8 billion pounds. With more competition in the marketplace every year, milk continues to be one of the best nutritional values available to consumers. With eight grams of protein per 8-ounce serving, milk provides one of the most affordable sources of high-quality protein and essential nutrients. That goes for all varieties, from whole milk to skim, and chocolate milk as well. In addition to being good for you, milk is as safe and wholesome as ever. Dairy farmers work with veterinarians to treat their cows when they're sick and to make sure those animals are kept out of the milk supply chain until any antibiotics have cleared their system. Recent high-profile government reports show that dairy industry safeguards are working and that no antibiotics get into the food supply. These important facts can sometimes get lost in all of the internet noise and misinformation spread across the news media. Vocal critics with agendas and hidden interests are taking swipes at the dairy industry and conventional agriculture on social media and other electronic media platforms. SUDIA won't allow its positive dairy message to be drowned out. It will continue to be active on social media this year, promoting a healthy diet packed with dairy foods and physical activity. For more information about June Dairy Month and celebration events in your area, go to www.SoutheastDairy.org.

Arty's Garden:
The bold and the beautiful
By Arty Schronce
I hear that children exposed to hot, spicy food even while in the womb are more likely to tolerate and enjoy those foods later in life. Perhaps early exposure is why I love rose campion. It grew freely in my neighbors' yard. I considered them to be my adoptive grandparents, and loved everything about them, including this bright magenta-crimson flower whose silver foliage seems to make its flowers even more intense.
Rose campion (Silene coronaria, synonym Lychnis coronaria) also known as mullein pink is an old-fashioned favorite in the carnation family. It is a biennial or short-lived perennial that is easy to grow, drought tolerant and deer resistant. Some people have complained that it seeds itself too readily in sunny gardens but it is easy to weed out if it sprouts in places it is not wanted.
The only other complaint about it is that the color of the flowers is too intense for some people's taste. A friend who is a garden designer once told a story of including rose campion in a garden he planted for an elderly woman. She informed him the color was one she "was not taught to appreciate." His careful color harmonies did not matter to her; the color was practically scandalous.
Fortunately refinement at least when it comes to color was not part of my education. Strong colors, like
strong personalities, may be difficult to handle at times but that doesn't mean I want to banish them.
If you find rose campion too strong or dissonant with the colors around it, try taming and cooling it down with violets, blues, purples and pinks such as larkspur, triteleia, clasping heliotrope, purple verbena and pink varieties of California poppy. If you are timid or cautious about glaring mistakes in combining colors, there is a pure white form and some that are white with only a touch or blush of magenta that you may find easier to utilize.
If, however, you want to enhance the brilliance of rose campion, plant it amid other silver plants such as dusty miller. Combining bright red corn poppies, rose campion and the dark foliage of Bishop of Llandaff dahlia creates a vignette as rich as a newly woven Persian rug. If you dare, combine equally intense flowers such as lemon yellow daylilies and orange California poppies along with rose campion and deep purple verbena.
In the words of one of my correspondents: "I may have no taste, but I love color!"

sprayed onto green areas such as athletic fields and golf courses.
Thoughts about the property's potential uses began to change, however, when the tract was deemed too valuable for land application. At the same time, a comprehensive land-use plan for Conyers and Rockdale County identified a deficit in park land, and Atlanta won its ambitious bid to host the Centennial Olympic Games in 1996. Conyers courted the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games, and won approval to develop the horse park in 1991.
Today the park boasts:
The Grand Prix Stadium and Plaza, with seating for up to 17,000
The Charles C. Walker Arena, an en-
closed venue with bleacher seating for 2,500 and competition area measuring 115 ft. x 279 ft. 10 outdoor auxiliary arenas of various sizes A six-barn stable complex with 690 stalls A steeplechase field The 173-acre Big Haynes Creek Nature Center The 7,000-yard Cherokee Run Golf Course A five-acre arboretum

The Confederate rose shall rise again
Gene Perry of Auburn (Gwinnett County) is shown with his Confederate rose (Hibiscus mutabilis) last fall. Also known as the Dixie rosemallow or cotton rose, this perennial flower grows anywhere from four to six feet in height, according to horticulturists. Perry's is a particularly hardy specimen, however, as he stands 6 ft., 3 in., which is considerably shorter than the plant itself.
Although native to China, this shrub once grew abundantly throughout the South, hence its common name. The blooms are noted for changing from white to pink to a deep shade of rose as they age, sometimes over the course of a day. Legend attributes this change to the flowers soaking up the blood spilled by soldiers fighting on Confederate battlefields during the Civil War.
Meanwhile, back in the present day, Perry cares for his Confederate roses by cutting the bushes down four- to six-inches from the ground and covering them with pine straw before the first freeze. He saves the cuttings and places them in water during winter. To replant the cutting come spring, he recommends filling the hole with a mix of compost and light fertilizer, being careful with the delicate roots during planting, and keeping the soil around the plant moist for four to six weeks after planting. Confederate roses come back in spring and bloom from September to October.

Russ Goodman grows `Blue Gold'
His story will be told on the big screen at the Georgia National Fair
What do blueberries and blue suede shoes have in common? Russ Goodman, thank you, thank you very much.
Goodman has 600 acres under cultivation with highbush and rabbiteye blueberry bushes in Clinch County, and a small but devoted following of Elvis Presley fans who appreciate him for his skill at impersonating the immortal entertainer at charity and civic events in South Georgia.
His talents for farming and for Elvis are in his genes. "My family's been farming for generations," Goodman said. "My brother and all my family farms over in the Tift County area. My brother farms on land that's been in the family for almost 200 years." And Elvis? "I got that from my mother," he said. "She would say I've taken it another step." The Elvis routine is all in good fun; farming is Goodman's calling. "Farming can be tough, don't get me wrong, but there's something about working the land and being outside in God's creation that makes you realize that what we do is a pretty noble profession," Goodman said. Goodman's Cogdell Berry Farm was assembled from land that has been in his wife's family since 1822. Goodman is one of 150 Georgia blueberry farmers who collectively own the MBG Marketing Cooperative with 150 growers in the Great Lakes region, mostly Michigan. "We sell blueberries all over the world," Goodman said. "I've packed blueberries and put them on airline pallets that have gone to Hong Kong." Hoping to emulate the success found by the state's pecan growers, Georgia's blueberry industry is upping production and seeking new markets and greater demand for its product. Goodman is one of two blueberry growers and two peanut farmers featured in the Georgia Department of Agriculture's annual farm film series screened in the fall at the Georgia National Fair in Perry. See all four stories in the Georgia Grown Building at the Georgia National Fairgrounds & Agricenter Oct. 6-16.

Farmers Unite: Middle Georgia growers offer a wide variety of fresh, local foods
Continued From Page 1
to seek new markets and to ensure the survival of their families' livelihoods without subsidies. Due to the proximity of the Macon metropolitan area, which is considered more affluent than a typical rural region, they are ineligible for grants that would offset the expense of expansion.
"If you build it yourself you can steer it," said Dr. Rusty Bean, a veterinarian who owns The Little Farm near Gray with his wife, Amy. "You don't have the government, FSA, USDA, coming on your farm telling you, `You're not going to grow beets this year, you're going to do what we want you to do.'"
As society's views on food come full circle from store-bought and heavily processed to fresh-picked and homegrown, the farmers of the Middle Georgia Co-op are betting there are more buyers out there than their limited geography currently offers.
Lyle Lansdell, a former case manager of epidemiology studies at the University of North Carolina, has taken a strong interest in raising Katahdin/Dorper meat sheep since retiring to Forest Grove Farm in Sandersville. She's found an abattoir that is open to experimentation. Her latest challenge for the processor: trim lamb bellies into bacon.
"Lamb bellies are getting to be trendy in restaurants," she tells Asherman and Bean.
Asherman's reaction is telling of her role in this group of iconoclasts who hail from widely divergent backgrounds but who also think enough alike that they can finish one another's sentences.
"The irony of bellies getting trendy in restaurants," Asherman laughs.
The farms that make up the co-op are as diverse as their owners. Because they straddle the fall line between Georgia's Piedmont and its Coastal Plain, they cover varied soil types and temperature ranges that contribute to a bountiful harvest of variety for the co-op. One may find great success with sweet potatoes but failure with broccoli, while a fellow co-op member 30 miles away will experience just the opposite.
Middle Georgia is temperate enough to allow production 12 months out of the year, while the concentration of resources in the co-op will allow multiple farmers to step in to fill a single order and keep the business local.
"If a caterer calls and says, `I need 30 pounds of lettuce' and I only have 15 pounds, I will call Julia and say, `I need 15 pounds of lettuce,'" said Amy Bean of The Little Farm. "We have always cooperated; this just makes it official."
The other founding members of the cooperative are: Babe + Sage in Gordon; The Lonely Cricket Forest Farm in Haddock; and Vesterfield Farms in Cochran.
The co-op's founders are in the process of preparing by-laws and formalizing a legal structure for the group, and plan to develop an application process to accept additional members in the future. All of the founding farms are sustainable farms, but conventional growers will be welcomed as well, Bean said.
The group has produced a 4-minute, 21-second video about themselves that is linked to their fundraising campaign. View the video and donate to their cause online at MiddleGeorgiaGrowers.com.
