Growing the agriculture workforce: Emmanuel College seeks $100,000 to fund new Diversified Agriculture Program
According to the USDA, more than 60,000 highly skilled jobs open up within the agriculture workforce each year, but the nation's colleges produce only 35,000 graduates to fill those jobs. Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs hopes to supplement that number with its new Diversified Agriculture Program, set to begin in the fall, pending final approval from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
The college is seeking benefactors to fund the program, setting a goal to raise $100,000 by July 1.
"Lives will be changed because of this program," said Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black. "I am excited about how this program will equip students with the hands-on experience they'll need."
Owen Thomason, course developer and program chair for the Diversified Agriculture Program, said the new degree program is a natural fit for Northeast Georgia, with six of the state's top 10 agricultural counties

located within 50 miles of the college. "One out of every seven jobs in the state
of Georgia is in agriculture," he said. "The hands-on learning and internship opportunities of this program, combined with an excellent academic foundation, will provide students with the ability to succeed in today's agricultural workforce."
Georgia State Sen. John Wilkinson, RToccoa, said that oftentimes agriculture is taken for granted, despite being Georgia's most valuable industry.
"Agriculture is a $74 billion business; $1.26 million is made in the Tri-County area of Madison, Franklin, and Hart counties," Wilkinson said.
The four-year bachelor's degree program at Emmanuel College will allow students to select one of three concentrations: agriculture business, agriculture science or agriculture missions.
"Emmanuel College is delighted to begin this new program that will make a considerable positive impact on the North Georgia agricultural community," said Ron White, president of Emmanuel College. "It is des-
tined to be one of the college's outstanding majors."
Students will have the opportunity to experience learning in and out of the classroom with the addition of a 45-acre Diversified Agriculture Teaching and Learning Center located on campus. The center will have greenhouses, animal science teaching facilities, land laboratories and an integrated research center.
The program will provide 124 academic hours of instruction. A general education
core curriculum will be enhanced with 32 hours of agricultural classes and 48 hours of course-specific areas. This hands-on experience will include internships, research opportunities and study abroad activities. Emmanuel College is a private, Christian, liberal arts college founded in Franklin County in 1919. Current enrollment is about 800 students representing more than 28 states, 10 foreign countries and 25 religious denominations. The 150-acre campus is located in Franklin Springs, about 30 miles northeast of Athens.

Strawberry Yields
`Tis the season to enjoy a handful of strawberries, like these plucked from the fields at Jaemor Farms in Alto. Strawberry season in Georgia lasts about 10 weeks, beginning as early as late February in South Georgia. Strawberries rank third in Georgia's small fruit sales, trailing muscadine grapes and blueberries. They represent two percent of the $772 million fruit and nut crop sector in Georgia. Get some berry creative ideas for using strawberries in the kitchen on page 6, and read about new ways scientists are helping farmers improve their strawberry crops on page 12.

Georgia Department of Agriculture recognizes three school systems for their farm-to-school work
Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black recently presented the first Georgia Grown System of Distinction Award to Carrollton City Schools, Clarke County Schools and Bibb County Schools. This award was established to recognize each system's nutrition director and their schools for being the first to the plate at developing superior farmto-school programs on the state and national levels.
Each school system has offered first-rate insight, abundant student involvement and stellar farm-to-school events that have led
to further development of the Georgia Department of Agriculture's multiple farm-toschool efforts, Black said.
All three school systems are on the forefront of the farm-to-school movement in the state and key to the success of the 20/20 Vision for School Nutrition in Georgia, which aims to have at least 20 percent of every meal in every Georgia public school every day to be comprised of Georgia products by the start of the 2020 school year.
"These school nutrition directors are setting the example of how to purchase local
products for school systems, all while improving the nutritional value for their students," Black said. "We appreciate all of their outstanding efforts and look forward to building upon our relationship for our children to promote local and healthy eating."
Dr. Linette Dodson, district nutrition director for Carrollton City Schools, said the system started changing its nutrition plan just before passage of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act in 2010. One goal of the law was to help schools produce balanced meals, there-

Cook Georgia Grown:
Strawberry meals all day
Strawberries with every meal? Don't mind if we do! Executive Georgia Grown Chef Holly Chute offers strawberries three ways, each one a delicious take on the tastiest fruit of spring.
Strawberry Stuffed French Toast
Ingredients: 12 slices raisin bread 1 8-oz. pkg. light cream cheese, softened 6-12 strawberries, sliced 2 Tbsps. butter, divided Honey or syrup
Photos by Megan Turcotte/Georgia Department of Agriculture
Batter 2 eggs 1 cup milk 2 Tbsps. sugar 1 tsp. cinnamon tsp. vanilla extract
Preparation: Combine all batter ingredients in a bowl. Whisk together. Set aside.
Lay bread out on a cutting board. Spread a thin layer of cream cheese on each slice, using entire package. Top six of the slices with sliced strawberries then place remaining six slices on top.
Heat one tablespoon of butter in a large skillet over medium high heat. Dip sandwiches one at a time in batter. Cook three sandwiches at a time in hot skillet. Cook until golden brown on each side, 3-4 minutes per side. Repeat with remaining sandwiches. Serve with honey or syrup.
No Bake Strawberry Tart
Ingredients:
Crust 1 cups oatmeal 1 cups pitted dates cup pecans cup light brown sugar
Filling 1 cup fresh strawberries, chopped 15-20 strawberries, sliced 8 ozs. light cream cheese, softened cup Greek vanilla yogurt cup apple jelly, melted
Crust Combine all ingredients in a food processor. Process until mixture is finely chopped and holds together when pinched. Spray a 9-inch deep tart pan or a 10-inch regular tart pan. Press mixture in bottom and sides of pan, pressing firmly to hold together.
Filling In the bowl of a mixer, combine cream cheese and yogurt. Mix on medium speed until smooth. Add chopped strawberries and mix until well combined. Spread filling evenly in crust. Arrange sliced berries over top of filling then brush with melted apple jelly. Refrigerate for several hours.
Strawberry Avocado Salsa
Ingredients: 2 cups diced strawberries cup diced avocado 1 tsp. lime zest Juice of 1 lime 2 Tbsps. finely diced red or Vidalia onion 2 Tbsps. finely shredded fresh basil 1 Tbsp. honey 1 Tbsp. finely diced jalapeno
Preparation: Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Toss gently to mix well. Serve with chicken, fish, pork or tortilla chips.

Arty's Garden: Grow more than berries
in your strawberry jar
By Arty Schronce
Strawberry jars, those large earthenware containers with planting
pockets on the sides, seem like a perfect combination of form and
function: practical, attractive, even clever. They are like a high-rise
for the berries and allow someone without a lot of space to grow a
few berries.
Sadly, I've never had any luck growing strawberries in them.
They dried out too quickly, and I felt the constant watering was not
worth the effort for the amount of berries produced. It was always
easier to stop at the local farmers market and pick up some Georgia
Grown strawberries there. And they were better than what I grew.
After seeing a strawberry jar with actual strawberries at the Pike
Nursery in Toco Hills, I may have to try again. I'll probably choose
a strawberry I can't find at the farmers market, perhaps our native
strawberry (Fragaria virginiana) or maybe `Pineberry,' the variety
with white fruits that is supposed to taste of pineapple.
If you've failed with strawberries and don't want to try again,
don't throw out your strawberry jar. I have had success growing
other things in them. Here are a few suggestions:
Succulents Hen-and-dibbies will live for me in a strawberry jar
when they won't
live anywhere else.
Creeping sedums
are excellent
choices. Combine
ones with blue-
green, yellow,
green, maroon or
variegated foliage
for a tapestry of
color.
Herbs The
best herb for a
strawberry jar is
thyme. There are
numerous kinds
with different
flavors and colors,
making them
attractive as well
as useful. Chives,
scented gerani-
ums, lavender
cotton (Santolina
chamaecyparissus), green santolina (Santolina virens) and oregano are a few other
Terra-cotta strawberry jars in my garden containing herbs, succulents and flowers, and two ceramic strawberry jars that are too small for most plants (and have no drainage holes). I've put them into service as a vase and toothbrush holder.
herbs to consider.
Flowers Por-
tulaca (rose moss), calibrachoa (million bells), sweet alyssum, dwarf
marigolds and miniature daffodils are worth a try.
When planting a strawberry jar, start with the pot empty and plant
the bottom pockets first. Don't try to squeeze the root ball into the
pocket but place the plant inside the jar and bring its top out through
the hole. To help water reach the bottom plants, I place a cardboard
tube from a roll of paper towels at the top of the jar and fill it with
pebbles. Some people use a PVC pipe with holes drilled in it.
For best success, get the largest strawberry jar you can afford.
This weekend I found a tiny blue strawberry jar discarded at the side
of the street. It had no drainage hole at the bottom and was far too
small for growing anything. (The potting soil inside indicated some-
one had tried.) I picked it up and converted it into a vase.
I received a green strawberry jar from a friend. Again, no drain-
age hole and too small to grow much of anything, but it makes an
excellent holder for my toothbrushes and dental instruments!

Department Snapshot: Fuel and Measures Division serves every Georgian
(Editor's Note: This is the first in an occasional series spotlighting the various divisions of the Georgia Department of Agriculture and the work they do in support of agriculture and consumer protection.)
The Georgia Department of Agriculture's authority to regulate weights and measures dates to a Congressional order issued in 1781. In 1927, rules governing the sale of petroleum were legislated. Overseen for many years by the Department of Revenue, the responsibility for ensuring accurate and quality fuel sales was transferred to the Department of Agriculture in 1972.
Today, the enforcement of laws governing both falls under the purview of the Fuel and Measures Division, just one of several units in the agriculture department that directly touch the lives of all Georgians, not just the ones who farm.
Their work is most obvious at the 166,365 retail gas pumps at 7,562 stations throughout the state. Richard Lewis, division director, said it takes 20 inspectors about 18 months to visit every single one. During that time, they're also investigating complaints about fuel quality and the accuracy of fuel measurement. The division received 878 complaints in calendar year 2015; 256 of them were related to fuel quality.
Each inspection includes pulling a fuel sample that is sent to the department's fuel oil lab in Tifton, which checks for purity, performance, octane rating and other quality standards. The lab tested 13,520 samples in calendar year 2015.
Three more inspectors in the fuel section focus on high-speed pumps like those found at commercial truck stops and airports. And another three inspectors check 1,248 propane meters fitted on trucks that make home deliveries statewide. Those three are also charged with verifying the accuracy of 121 grain moisture meters used by growers of crops like wheat, soybeans and corn.
One inspector also checks the 30 compressed natural gas meters that measure fueling of vehicles such as city buses, garbage trucks and taxis that are adapted to run on that type of fuel.
On the weights and measures side of the house, five two-person teams travel the state checking the accuracy of 3,229 heavy scales with a capacity above 10,000 pounds. They travel with 21,000 pounds of test weights to places like fertilizer plants, the ports and timber yards.
Six more inspectors verify the accuracy of 16,566 small scales (capacity below 10,000 pounds). Those can be found in retail establishments such as hardware, pawn and jewelry stores, or in agricultural concerns like poultry plants or blueberry packing houses, Lewis said. And finally, there's an inspector charged with verifying the calibration of 460 meters on dairy tanks used by Georgia dairy farms.

University researchers use weather monitors to combat diseases in strawberry fields
By Sharon Dowdy University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences
University of Georgia and University of Florida researchers are using weather monitors to combat diseases in strawberry fields.
The researchers are testing the Strawberry Advisory System in Georgia strawberry fields. SAS, an app created, in part, by UF plant pathologist Natalia Peres, uses temperature and leaf moisture monitors to recommend when farmers should spray for Botrytis and anthracnose, two fungi that cause fruit rot on strawberries.
Strawberry farmers typically apply fungicides every week during the growing season to prevent and control diseases. The SAS application reduces the amount of fungicide a grower needs to spray. A 2014 Florida study showed that following SAS recommendations could increase growers' net

profits by $1.7 million over a 10-year period when compared to traditional spraying regimens. The system has been tested in Florida for three to four years and in South Carolina for one year. This is the first year that SAS is being used on Georgiagrown berries.
Farmers can install the necessary equipment a temperature and humidity sensor along with a leaf moisture sensor and cellular communication hardware for about $2,500.
The UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences is exploring the addition of leaf moisture sensors to its existing network of 81 weather stations around the state. Collectively, these stations make up the Georgia Automated Environmental Monitoring Network (weather.uga.edu). In the past, a few UGA weather stations included sensors to track leaf moisture. The devices were difficult to keep properly calibrated and were eventually removed, said Ian Flitcroft, manager of the network.
"The UGA weather stations can ultimately be modified to include this device," said Phillip Brannen, a UGA CAES plant pathologist based in Athens. "If a farmer is located close enough to one of our weather stations, he can use that station's data."
For this weather-driven system to be effective, farmers must use accurate weather data for the area closest to their farm.
"In south Georgia, and in a lot of places across the state, it can rain in one field and the next one can be dry as a bone," Brannen said.
This season, UGA Cooperative Extension agents in Appling and Hall counties are testing the system in Georgia strawberry fields. The monitoring stations are located in north Georgia and in south Georgia to track how effective the system is where soil types and weather conditions are different.
In Appling County, UGA Extension agent Shane Curry works with farmers in one of the largest strawberry-producing counties in Georgia. He says that the way the berries are picked makes it difficult to track the weather station data's effect on crop yields.
"Strawberries are picked every other day or every third day, so it's hard for us to get yield counts each time in a commercial field. We are collecting important data and probably will next season, also," he said. "Ideally if we don't see a yield decrease or a reduction in fruit quality, we can reduce the number of sprays and instead spray based on the weather."
Curry would like to see something similar to the SAS app adapted to other Georgia commodities such as pecans and blueberries, very profitable crops in Appling County. He feels the system would also be useful for controlling Botrytis and anthracnose in blueberries and, with some modifications, pecan scab disease in pecan orchards.
"With the right programming, we should be able to adapt this system or something similar to almost any crop," Curry said. "The research on the diseases is already done. Using the information we already have from university research and

making it available on smart phones through apps could be very beneficial to farmers. It's still Extension information, but the delivery is different."
Brannen agrees, and thinks Georgia blueberry farmers waste money and time applying unnecessary fungicide sprays.
"The long-term goal will be to add the leaf wetness sensors to UGA's weather stations. I'm excited about strawberries, but if we get this to work, we can use it on blueberries or apples, basically any crop that gets Botrytis or anthracnose," said Brannen, whose research focuses on using weather-monitoring equipment and satellite systems to monitor diseases in fruit crops. "Strawberries are a minor crop in Georgia, unless you are a strawberry farmer. It's not like in Florida and South Carolina. Blueberries are first in my next thought process. This system would help us predict whether a farmer needs to spray, and it could save him money too," he said. "You could switch commodities and I think it would work and then we could use it to predict the occurrence of the same organisms. If we can do that, then we will really be making hay."

School Award: Programs teach students to grow, harvest, prepare and eat fresh produce

by giving children access to healthy foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables during the school day.
"We offer locally grown on a daily basis, particularly when the seasons are good," Dodson said.
The district's junior high participates in Georgia's Test Kitchen program as a site where students assist in testing recipes using Georgia Grown foods. In recent years, the system has taken to social media to discuss its healthy eating initiative. In addition to Facebook, which captures parental audiences, the system uses Twitter and now Instagram, which captures students in junior high and high school who've been quick to "like" photos of featured dishes from the school menu.
"We're trying to use that as a way to market to our students what's being offered in the cafeteria on a daily basis," Dodson said.
Community support is growing, and even perennial critics of school nutrition are won over when a personal invitation to lunch reveals the true flavor of changes that the farm-to-school movement has made in the
cafeteria. "Our focus really has been to promote
what we're doing as being good food and get away from the stigmas that are associated with school meals," Dodson said. "We encourage people to eat with the children at school. We've invited local pediatricians, politicians even state politicians to show them what school meals look like now. They are pleasantly surprised."
The Clarke County School District began introducing fresh local foods to its cafeteria line in 2007.
"From regularly featuring Georgia Grown items on school menus to growing fresh produce in school gardens, we make spotlighting Georgia agriculture a top priority," said Paula Farmer, district nutrition director. "Clarke County (school menus) featured a Georgia grown item 95 days this academic year."
The district even cites the names and locations of farms that provide local produce on the menu panels it issues to students, parents and teachers on a monthly basis.
"The majority of our schools in Clarke
County have school gardens where students gain hands-on experience and learn how to install, maintain and harvest a garden," Farmer said. "Students can also learn a number of techniques for growing plants, as our gardens throughout the district take many forms, including raised beds, fruit orchards, greenhouses, bog gardens, edible courtyards and arboretums, to name a few."
Bibb County Schools first embraced the farm-to-school concept in 2010 with the installation of a garden at an inner-city school. Today students at various schools throughout the district maintain 40 raised-bed gardens.
"We have incorporated gardens into our schools to provide learning experiences for students. They learn to observe and chart growth; when to harvest; how food is prepared in the school kitchens and eventually served in the cafeteria," said Dr. Cleta Long, district nutrition director. "We do all of this so students can make the connection of farm-toschool. Our ultimate goal is to teach students about healthy eating, making healthy choices and preparing them for life-long learning."
Long said the district makes a concerted effort to serve fresh fruits and vegetables every day, and students have responded enthusiastically to the offer.
"We see students selecting fresh fruits and vegetables over canned or cooked. We see very little waste in the foods that are served and we especially see higher selection and consumption when fruits are cut into manageable pieces and served with a variety of fruits together," she said.
Long, like Dodson and Farmer, serves on the 20/20 Vision Planning team that is encouraging the inclusion of farm fresh foods from Georgia in every public school cafeteria in the state. Bibb County Schools will participate in its third Feed My School for a Week, during which almost all of the food served in cafeteria meals in one elementary school in the district is from Georgia farms or Georgia processors.
"We are thrilled to be one of the first districts to be recognized as a System of Distinction," Long said. "We love Georgia Grown and are so happy to be a part of it."
