Small-batch artisans win national recognition for Georgia Grown commodities

By Amy H. Carter
Artisans may well be the future of farming. They are the creative souls who look at a pecan or a coffee bean and say: What does this want to be?
They are people like Clay Oliver and Chip Grabow, who turn ordinary commodities into extraordinary products, products that make farming hip again; products that slick magazines and persnickety culinary clubs praise; products that elevate row crops from bushel baskets to silver tureens.
The story of Clay Oliver and his Oliver Farm Artisan Oils started with his search for a cheaper alternative to diesel fuel to run his

cotton harvester. It is still being written thanks to an award winning line of cooking oils that flowed from his research.
From his first batch of sunflower oil in 2012 to his receipt of the Good Food Award earlier this year, Oliver's oils are growing in reknown. His sunflower and green peanut oils are finalists for the 2016 Good Food Awards, and his artisan oils were recently named the Food Category Winner of Garden & Gun magazine's Sixth Annual "Made in the South Awards." A glossy Southern lifestyle magazine based in Charleston, S.C., Garden & Gun is read by roughly one million affluent consumers in all 50 states.
Artisan oils, Oliver told the magazine, are

far more flavorful than mass-produced varieties, giving the consumer an entirely different perspective on taste.
"Most people don't realize that the cheap peanut oil you buy at the store comes from the damaged and disease crop," Oliver said. "The flavor of oil made with quality nuts can be a revelation."
That's the same premise that Chip Grabow is broadcasting to coffee connoisseurs with Radio Roasters, a small-batch coffee concern he founded in Scottdale in 2013. A radio news producer at NPR for 15 years before moving to CNN, Grabow was looking for a way to touch consumers directly.

Georgia Grown Profile: Newton Crouch makes Georgia grow strong

By Emani Odumosu
If you could visit every agricultural producer in the State of Georgia, you would find many using equipment made by Newton Crouch Inc.
NCI, as it is known, is a familyowned manufacturer of spreaders and spraying equipment, selling parts and tanks to the fertilizer industry worldwide.
The business started in 1940 when Newton Crouch Sr. purchased a cotton gin and fertilizer plant from the Walker Brothers Co. in Griffin, an established leader in central Georgia for 39 years by that point.
"Newton Crouch was always known for our experience in the fertilizer industry. This gives NCI firsthand knowledge of what qual-

ity a spread pattern means," said Steve Crouch, president and son of Newton Crouch. "We're excited to help the growers of Georgia produce their products."
NCI manufactures a wide variety of equipment for both liquid and dry applications and is the second largest supplier of truck mounted spreaders in the United States. The company also offers application training.
Newton Crouch equipment is used not only here in the U.S. but in Canada, Mexico, Colombia, Japan, Ukraine and Belize.
"Our equipment is known for being robust and the spread pattern

is the envy of the industry," said Crouch.
The company is based in Griffin but has locations in Albany as well as Sebring, Fla.
NCI is the largest dealer of Norwesco tanks in the Southeast and even persuaded the tank manufacturer to build a plant in Griffin. NCI is the
oldest continuous dealer in the nation for TeeJet spraying products.
"What's exciting for us is that we come to work every day and build quality equipment that producers can use in the field and the grower knows it will do a good job," said Crouch. "We're a family owned business that's dedicated

to serving our customers with the finest equipment that we can make available to service a wide variety of products, from orange groves to cotton. We are known to make equipment that is long-lasting."
NCI's role in the agriculture industry may not be as visible as most but it is important nonetheless, as its equipment helps producers complete their responsibilities efficiently. NCI is all about supporting local agribusinesses, which is the primary mission and pride of the Georgia Grown program.
"We're just excited to be part of helping the growers of Georgia produce their product and serve the local consumer," Crouch said.
For more information on NCI and its products, visit www.newtoncrouch.com.

Thoughts on the relevance of agriculture

By Tim Gerard
Agriculture has been a big deal in Georgia since Gen. James E. Oglethorpe landed at Savannah in 1733. Oglethorpe sought the advice of Native Americans about hunting and growing food in England's new colony, which led to a robust export trade with England, fulfilling one of the major purposes of the colony.
Today, Metropolitan Atlanta accounts for nearly half of the state's population, but agriculture remains the state's biggest industry. And just as industrialization and advances in technology have helped the state to diversify and become more sophisticated, so it has gone with agriculture.
The beginning of this shift in thinking by and about agriculture dates to the post-World War II boom in the U.S. economy. Despite the tremendous social upheavals brought by the Civil War and Reconstruction, the South was slow to shake off its old agrarian ways and embrace the progressive changes of industrialization. It wasn't until the mid-20th century that mechanical harvesters were put to wide use in the region.
It was about this time that Dr. John Donald Wade (18921963) founded The Georgia Review (1947). Wade was a gentleman farmer and academic from Marshallville who earned a doctorate in 1924 from Columbia University and served as chair of the English Department at the University of Georgia.Wade was a product of the times in which he lived, times in which the South was still deeply resentful of the North and the perceived attempt to force Northern industrial

capitalism on a formerly agrarian South. Just because the Confederacy lost the Civil War did not settle the tension between these two parts of the supposedly United States, any more than it settled the controversial and complicated issues involving race that still reverberate to this day.
So it is probably no wonder that Wade peppered his new literary journal with profiles of progressive Georgia farmers and changing farm practices. Consider "The Prince of Southern Farmers" by Willard Range that appeared in the second volume (Spring 1948, Volume II, Number 1, page 92) of The Georgia Review. It describes the acumen of a farmer named David Dickson (1809-1885) of Hancock County. Dickson enjoyed considerable success employing what were, at the time, cutting edge farming practices, including the use of Peruvian guano fertilizer, which he soon embellished with his own additives into something called Dickson Compound.
He was generous with his knowledge to the point that he hosted hundreds of visitors annually to observe his methods first hand. In addition he published farming articles in a journal named The Cultivator, and eventually a book titled A Practical Treatise on Agriculture (1870). All of this earned him the admiring title of "The Prince of Southern Farmers" in his lifetime.
When one reads those early volumes of The Review, one can clearly see Wade's hand in making it an interesting and widely appealing publication on a broad range of topics. Among academic literary reviews, Georgia's was one of the earliest, and remains one of the top reviews in the country,

although it has evolved into primarily a poetry, fiction and non-fiction literary publication appealing to a much narrower audience. It is consistently ranked as one of the nation's top literary magazines in general.
All this is relevant today because we live in a country where there are more people incarcerated than there are farmers. Alongside the dwindling population of rural America (roughly 15 percent), the population of farmers has also dwindled (less than 1 percent). The average age of independent farm operators is now 58, and the number of younger people entering farming is dropping.
As important as agriculture is from an economic and a geo-political perspective, as a nation we are increasingly ignorant of what farmers do precisely because there are so few of them left. As pioneering as he was, farming has changed dramatically since the days of David Dickson. Even though he was ahead of his time, there was no reason to believe that so few farmers would be able to produce what they do today. And, yet, the values of rural America continue to be judged as important to the national character as they ever were. Thus the challenge is not only to "feed the world" but to continue to gird the social structure in which farming still stands for something. Perhaps we need to heed the words written by Wade at the inception of The Review: "...the dignity and worth of country life must be reaffirmed for the people who practice it and for people who do not practice it."
--Tim Gerard, born and raised in Iowa, currently retired
from a career of many chapters, moved to Marshallville in
2013.

Resolving to grow your own food in the New Year?
Consider these tips for success

On the fence about growing your own food? We've got several good reasons why you need to hop on down and get cultivating. They come from Cory Mosser, founder of Natural Born Tillers and a self-described proponent of "little ag." Natural Born Tillers is a farm planning and consulting service based in Covington that works with producers growing on as little as a quarter-acre to plan, plant and market farm produce. Find him online at www.naturalborntillers.com
"Anyone who grows more food than they can eat is a cultivator. You can call yourself a farmer. You feed people," Mosser said while offering these tips during a seminar held at the Hoss Tools Sustainable Living Center for backyard farmers at the Sunbelt AgExpo in Moultrie this past October.
"These are things I wish I'd known when I had a quarter-acre weed-choked space," he said.
u Grow a surplus. u Plant perennials, as many and as
often as you can. Take notes. Learn to propagate. u Kill babies (weeds). u Build a resilient system with cover crops. Once every three rotations, plant just for the soil. u Plant good bug blends. Reseed. u Flame weed. Kill weeds with heat using a flame weeder rather than chemicals. u Mulch is your friend, and your front line.

u Aerated compost tea. A waterbased, oxygen-rich recipe that encourages good bacteria to multiply and combat toxins in the garden. Recipes can be found online.
u Diversify. Take a year off from tomatoes. Try new things.
u Take notes. There's a test every day.
u Sterilize. Heat the surface of the soil to 136 before planting to kill weeds and insect larvae and maximize space in the garden with closer plantings.
u Save seeds. u Grow more every year. u Cross-pollinate with other
gardeners. u Save your back. Buy a wheel
hoe. u Get a real soil test. Instead
of saying, `Oh, I'll just throw a little 10-10-10 or lime, everybody needs lime,' get to know all your micronutrients. u Substitute edibles for ornamentals in your landscape. When you landscape your yard, ask yourself: `Could I put a blueberry bush there? I wonder if a pomegranate tree would look good there.' u Build a greenhouse. u Make your own compost. u Maximize space: Kill your lawn and garden in your front yard. It becomes focal point and a good way to meet your neighbors. Food draws people. u Teach your kids and grandkids. If

your kids don't know where food comes from, they don't respect it. If they don't respect it, they won't value it. u Extend your season. Use row covers. u Give away or preserve as much as you can. u Befriend and support a local gardener. u Have fun.
Every November, Natural Born Tillers redesigns its logo and sells it on T-shirts to raise money for local farmers in the lean winter months. This year's beneficiary of the three-week campaign was GoodGroceries at Tewksbury Farm in Buckhead.

A great pumpkin grows from a small gift
Baxlee Benefield, a third-grade student at Jones Elementary in Bremen, brought home a small pumpkin plant from school one day. She planted it and nurtured it until it produced this beautiful pumpkin. Baxlee is the daughter of Mark and Alison Benefield.

The Christmas Garden
Christmas, at least how it is depicted in many songs, is foreign to me. I love the melody and the sentiment of Irving Berlin's "White Christmas," but I know that a Georgia Christmas is more likely to be filled with flowers than snowflakes. And while I enjoy the songs of frightful weather, they don't speak to my experience. Perhaps that is why I have a growing affection for "What Sweeter Music," a relatively new carol by composer John Rutter with lyrics based on a poem by Robert Herrick (1591-1674). The lyrics are below.
Here are photos from my and other gardens in winter. With our winter-blooming flowers, and abundant greenery and fruits, I do not begrudge anyone their snowmen or sleigh rides.
Merry Christmas and Happy Gardening in 2016!

Algerian iris (Iris unguicularis) is only available from specialty nurseries. It can take a few years to get established, but when it is it may bloom on and off from December to March.

What Sweeter Music
What sweeter music can we bring Than a carol, for to sing The birth of this our heavenly King? Awake the voice! Awake the string!

Camellias are the most spectacular of our winter flowers. This variety is `Mathotiana,' also known as "Purple Dawn." This was taken
at my parents' house on Christmas Day 2011.

Dark and dull night, fly hence away,

And give the honor to this day,

Violas and

That sees December turned to May.

pansies provide

a rainbow of colors all winter.

Why does the chilling winter's morn Smile, like a field beset with corn?

Or smell like a meadow newly-shorn,

Thus, on the sudden? Come and see

The cause, why things thus fragrant be:

Winterberry (Ilex verticillata) is another native holly. It is

`Tis He is born, whose quickening birth Gives life and luster, public mirth, To heaven, and the under-earth.

unusual in that it is

deciduous.

We see him come, and know him ours,

Who, with his sunshine and his showers,

Turns all the patient ground to flowers.

The darling of the world is come,

And fit it is, we find a room

To welcome him. The nobler part

Of all the house here, is the heart.

The pink buds of laurustinus are as attractive as its open white flowers. Photo taken at Atlanta's
Oakland Cemetery 12/13/15.

Winter jasmine produces lemon yellow flowers on bare stems
and can begin blooming in December and continu on and
off all winter.

Which we will give him; and bequeath This holly, and this ivy wreath, To do him honour, who's our King, And Lord of all this reveling.
What sweeter music can we bring, Than a carol for to sing The birth of this our heavenly King?

--Arty's Garden is written by Arty Schronce, the Department's resident gardening expert. He may be reached at arty.schronce@agr.georgia.gov or by writing the Market Bulletin office.

Variegated evergreens such as this aucuba will brighten any winter day.
While most people know the paperwhite narcissus as a potted holiday plant, it is hardy outdoors. This one was in bloom in my garden 12/21/13.

Wintersweet is a great joy. I have the two forms shown here. Mine may begin blooming in late November and continue into February.

Yaupon, a Georgia native, may also be one the world's most beautiful hollies with its deep red berries.
Snowdrops (Galanthus spp.) do not do as well in the South as they do farther north. However, I have seen them thrive in Atlanta and other Piedmont
gardens. This was taken Christmas Day 2014.

Home Cooking:
Persimmon Dressing

Ingredients 2 ripe persimmons (peeled and cut) 1 tsp. Dijon mustard 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar 1/2 cup pecan oil or olive oil Salt and pepper

Preparation Combine persimmon, Dijon and vinegar in a food processor. Puree until smooth. Gradually add pecan oil with motor running. Mixture should be thick and smooth. Season to taste.
Serving suggestion: Arugula & spinach salad with apples, red grapes, pecans, blue cheese and red onion.

Caring for Christmas plants after Christmas ends

Tell the truth: Do you toss your poinsettias after Christmas Day? Will the Christmas tree you cut fresh the weekend after Thanksgiving be topping off the trash heap by New Year's Eve?
Christmas is the one time of year when sustainability takes a holiday. However, with a little planning and a lot of work (nothing new to gardeners), the Christmas bloomers that made this holiday so memorable will be around for another year of celebration next year.
Kent Backes, a Georgia Certified Plant Professional and associate with Atlantabased Pike Nurseries, tells us how:
u Can poinsettia be cultivated in Georgia
and grown year-round?
Yes, poinsettias can be maintained year round, but it is very difficult for them to re-bloom at Christmas. Poinsettias require a very specific amount of daylight versus sunlight to bloom, which is why they are grown in greenhouses under the care of experienced growers.
u Can poinsettias be transferred from
pot to garden/lawn or should they be
maintained as potted plants primarily
indoors?
Poinsettias are best as houseplants. Once their blooms shrivel, reduce watering to weekly and keep them out of direct sunlight. In the spring, trim them back and

resume regular watering. You can move them outdoors to a semi shaded area during warmer months but, because it's a tropical plant natively grown in Mexico, they don't do well in the cold (once the nighttime temperature drops below the mid-50s). We recommend keeping them potted so that you can easily bring them indoors when necessary.
u How do you recommend caring for the plant to ensure future blooms? While it's relatively easy to keep the plant alive, poinsettias are light sensitive and require lengthy periods of uninterrupted complete darkness to get that color they are known for. Getting the plants to bloom is tricky, but with some dedication and a dark closet, you can do it! To get poinsettias to re-bloom for Christmas, they need to spend 2/3 of the day in total darkness and only get about 8 hours of early morning sunlight for about 2 months.
u Let's talk about Christmas cactus, another popular plant for holiday color. Christmas cacti make great houseplants. Like the poinsettia, the Christmas cactus is also tropical and won't survive the winter outdoors. It could be placed outdoors in a shady area (not full sun) during warmer months, but leave it in a pot so that you can easily bring it back

inside during the winter. The Christmas cactus also has daylightsensitive blooming characteristics. When maintaining year-to-year, you may or may not have blooms that coincide with Christmas. They all bloom in the winter, but some species may not bloom until closer to Valentine's Day.
u How do you recommend caring for
the Christmas cactus after it finishes
flowering?
To get it to re-bloom next winter, it needs a dormancy period in the fall, like the poinsettia. Start limiting its water, make sure it gets about 12 hours of darkness each night, and keep it in a cool location for about two months. Once new buds form, move to a fairly bright spot in the house, with even temperatures (not near any external doors where it'll be exposed to cold drafts).
u Potted amaryllises are popular
gifts during the holidays. Are they
sustainable after that initial blooming?
It's pretty easy to maintain amaryllis from year to year. They are adaptable and grow well as houseplants with almost no care. Just give them lots of sunlight and minimal water. Once the blooms fade, cut the stalk down to the top of the bulb. Through spring, give them lots of sunlight and fertilize them monthly. Here's the trick to getting amaryllis to re-bloom: In the late summer or early fall, stop giving them water and take them out of their pots. Let them dry out and go dormant until about November. Then repot the bulbs (keep 1/3 of the bulb above the soil), place them somewhere warm and sunny, and give them water to watch them re-grow and bloom again.
u Can amaryllis be planted outside or
should it be maintained in a pot for
ease of movement between the indoors
and outdoors?
Just like the poinsettia and Christmas cactus, amaryllis is tropical and will not

survive the winter outdoors but will be fine outside in warmer months. Keep them in pots so that they can easily be brought indoors when the weather cools and they need to go dormant.
u Generally speaking, are there other species of less common but equally pretty plants to consider when giving for the holidays? Floral hydrangeas, narcissus paperwhites and orchids are also great options to consider for holiday gifts. Hydrangeas can be maintained as houseplants until spring, and then planted outdoors in a shady area where they will grow into a bush. Paperwhites can be planted outdoors after December. Keep in mind that they won't flower the same year they are planted (if they bloomed at Christmas), but will flower the next year like daffodils. Orchids are great gifts; they are easier to maintain than most people think and their flowers last a long time.

"I love coffee and I love to roast. Some buddies in other parts of the U.S. are rosters and they gave me the courage to just go for it," Grabow said. "I also got tired in my news career of producing this sort of intangible product that just goes out over the airwaves and you're not really sure if the end user, the news consumer, likes it or not. Coffee is a tangible thing something I literally hand to the customers and get an immediate or almost immediate feedback on whether they like it."
Grabow sources his coffee from an importer who works directly with farmers in coffee-growing regions of Central and South America, East Africa and Indonesia. The farmers are almost always small landowners who use sustainable and organic practices.
Grabow considers himself to be a curator of coffee, choosing different varieties for his consumers, introducing them to new tastes and characteristics. Unlike chain brewers such as Starbucks, Grabow doesn't buy on a massive scale.
"We rotate through coffees as new ones come to harvest. It's a crop and like any crop, certain coffees ripen and harvest

at different times during the year. We also probably educate much more than Starbucks does. We like to explain just how that brown liquid in your cup gets there and all the steps that it took to finally brew that delicious cup of coffee," Grabow said. "We also deliver to your door."
Radio Roasters offers fresh roasted coffee by mail through its website, radioroasters.com. Like Oliver Farm, Radio
Roasters is a member of Georgia Grown, the marketing brand of the Georgia Department of Agriculture that works to find new markets for Georgia farmers and their products. Georgia Grown Executive Chef Holly Chute took Radio Roasters coffee to the James Beard House in New York City for a gala foodie event in October that celebrated the goodness of Georgia farm products prepared by several of the state's premier chefs and served on a lavish scale. "We were absolutely thrilled to have our coffee served there," Grabow said. "They used our coffee from Huila department in Colombia. It accompanied a tasty dessert from Ford Fry's pastry chef, Chrysta Poulos. I think it was a hit."

With persistence and continued marketing, Grabow is hopeful that Radio Roasters will continue to grow.
"For now, the day job at CNN is supporting us, but my hope is that coffee will become a full-time gig," he said. "We will see."
