Lovejoy's City Garden grows health and happiness

By Amy Carter
The sight of freshly plowed dirt was more than Lovejoy City Councilwoman Mary Ann Carp could just stand by and ponder.
"Some of the first dirt we plowed, Mary Ann took her shoes off and ran through it," said Lovejoy Mayor Bobby Cartwright.
Carp didn't grow up on a farm like Cartwright did, but preparations for the inaugural planting in Lovejoy's City Garden stirred happy memories of childhood for her just the same.
"They all laughed at me," Carp said of the witnesses to her gleeful romp in the garden in Lovejoy, "but it was just like when I was a kid."
Mankind began in a garden, and a garden is where most of us will rest when our end comes. Between beginning and end very little of modern life happens in the garden, and that's more than Cartwright could just stand by and ponder.

Nostalgic for his farming roots in South Georgia, Cartwright sought permission from Lovejoy's city council three years ago to farm a few barren acres beside the city's maintenance yard. Today the 14-acre Lovejoy City Garden grows in excess of 200,000 pounds of produce annually, and Cartwright has his eye on 4,200 acres near the water works for an expansion.
In the beginning the fruit of Lovejoy's garden was distributed free through the city's community center. Seeing a greater need, Cartwright and his staff secured grants that allowed them to expand their plantings and build a general store. Volunteers constructed the store mostly from reclaimed materials, and much of that from an old blacksmith shop that stood in Lovejoy during the Civil War.
Residents of Lovejoy receive a minimum $20 per month credit for produce from the garden

How America's Response to Outbreaks

of Livestock Disease Has Evolved

By Thomas Burke
The threat came from Missouri in early March. A commercial poultry operation within a mile of the border with Kansas was found to have Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza. Sandy Johnson, emergency management coordinator for the Kansas Department of Agriculture, was called upon to investigate. Johnson organized a team of local, state and federal officials who found no evidence that the virus had jumped the border.
Then on March 13 an astute poultry owner notified the Kansas Department of Agriculture of some suspicious deaths in his backyard flock. This gave Kansas its first opportunity to

contain avian influenza using a response plan shaped through exercises and simulations similar to those happening in poultry-producing states all over the country.
The unprecedented outbreak of HPAI in commercial and backyard poultry flocks earlier this year has spurred intense planning at the state and federal levels. The highly pathogenic form of avian influenza spreads rapidly and is often fatal to chickens and turkeys. The virus is carried by migratory wild waterfowl and is of most concern in the U.S. when migratory pathways become active with the onset of cooler weather in the fall and when warm weather returns in spring.
The U.S. has less experience handling

large-scale outbreaks of disease among poultry than it does with cattle or swine because the industrialization of poultry farming is a relatively recent development. A Georgia businessman named Jesse Jewell triggered the evolution of the modern broiler industry during the Great Depression, when he supplied cashpoor farmers with feed and hatchlings on credit and bought the poultry back after maturity at a profit for the farmer. This led to the use of densely packed broiler facilities that allow for higher production but also fuel the rapid spread of disease.
The largest of three recorded outbreaks of HPAI in the U.S. occurred in 1983; about 17

GEORGIA GROWN PROFILE: Bethesda Academy students go to school on the farm

By Morgan Davis
Just 11 miles from historic Downtown Savannah, a brotherhood is growing on 650 acres where young men are devoting themselves to God, work and education.
Founded in 1740 by the Rev. George Whitefield as a home for boys, Bethesda Academy stands as Savannah's most storied educational institution. This college-preparatory school now educates almost 100 young men in grades 6 through 12.
Bethesda Academy provides young men with a transformative second chance at success by promoting and instilling a love of God, a love of learning, and a strong work ethic cultivated in a number of campus-based enterprises, including a farm and garden.
"Bethesda Academy Farm encourages students to understand the importance of agriculture as well as entrepreneurship," said Andrea Dove, director of development and marketing

at the school. Bethesda students tend about 90-head of
cattle, hundreds of laying hens and a five-acre garden. They breed and milk a herd of dwarf Nigerian goats, providing the milk to a Sa-
vannah-based soap maker who produces soap under the Bethesda label. A line of grass-fed beef produced from the school's herd is also processed and marketed under the Bethesda Academy name; all of these products carry the Georgia Grown logo. Bethesda Academy

joined Georgia Grown in 2014. "With becoming a Georgia Grown member
and getting to use the logo on our beef, it really helped launch our Grass-Fed Beef Program," said Dove.
All of the money earned from the sale of Bethesda Beef, as with Bethesda's other enterprises including its Campus Rentals and Wildlife Sanctuary and Preserve help provide scholarship dollars for students who are not able to afford the full tuition cost to attend Bethesda.
This year Bethesda is celebrating its 275th anniversary, a milestone recognized by the city of Savannah, Chatham County, the Georgia General Assembly, U.S. Congress and, soon, a Presidential Commendation.
--Morgan Davis is our summer intern. She
is currently attending the University of Flor-
ida and studying Agricultural Education and
Communications.

UGA Scientists recommend rye as a cover crop for cotton

By Clint Thompson
University of Georgia, College of
Agricultural and Environmental
Sciences
Georgia cotton farmers can benefit from using rye as a cover crop, according to scientists on the University of Georgia Tifton Campus.
Along with providing an added defense against glyphosate-resistant Palmer amaranth at planting, rye reduces thrips infestations significantly and could save farmers irrigation expenses.
University water resource management specialist Gary Hawkins is an avid supporter of a conservation production system, the process of using a high-residue cover crop in the non-cropping season to conserve the soil, retain soil moisture, provide a mat that helps with weed control and many other beneficial aspects to building a better soil quality.
A high-residue cover crop is one that produces a large amount of biomass. Crops like cereal ryes, millets or legumes are most often used.
Irrigation Impact
Like all crops, cotton relies on water to grow and produce the yields that farmers need to make a profit. Prolonged dry spells can negatively impact cotton's ability to produce, especially during periods when cotton needs water the most, such as during bloom.
University graduate student Seth Byrd is currently involved in a study to determine whether rye can reduce the amount of irrigation needed to produce cotton. Reduced irrigation would save farmers money, while conserving water.
"If we can retain water in the soil profile, then we can potentially cut down on some of the supplemental irrigation we need," Hawkins said.

Cotton plants should benefit from rye's ability to retain moisture in the soil. Byrd is studying the impact of supplying cotton that has been planted after a rye cover crop with just 75 percent of its usual irrigation needs. Instead of the 1- to 2-inch weekly application of water, Byrd is providing the plants with 0.75 to 1.5 inches per week.
"The biggest place it (the study results) has potential, though, is with dry land growers. With dry land, you have unpredictable rainfall, and you're relying on rain as your sole source of water. If you hit a dry period at the wrong time, having this rye down could save some moisture," Byrd said. "You can prolong that moisture being in the soil profile."
Palmer Amaranth
The costliest weed Georgia cotton farmers encounter every year is the glyphosate-

Clint Thompson/UGA
resistant Palmer amaranth, also known as pigweed. An estimated $110 million is spent annually to manage this weed that can grow as high as 10 feet tall.
Herbicides provide some relief, but university scientists fear that their overuse may lead to more herbicide-resistance problems. Palmer amaranth populations are so high across Georgia that, although 90-percent control is achieved by herbicides, it's still not adequate control for cotton farmers.
The use of rye as a cover crop, to supplement herbicide use, has been proven to reduce Palmer amaranth populations even more. University weed scientist Stanley Culpepper said that rye reduces Palmer amaranth emergence by 60 to 80 percent, depending on the level of residue.
"The residue primarily blocks the sunlight needed for the Palmer to emerge, but also serves as a physical barrier," Culpepper said.

Rye is rolled and terminated simultaneously just before the cotton season begins. Some cover crops die in the winter, but others need to be manually terminated through tilling, mowing, or applying herbicides. This allows the cotton to be planted and established without competing against Palmer amaranth or the cover crop.
Once rye is rolled and a timely residual herbicide is applied, there are approximately three weeks when the field is free of Palmer amaranth. The greatest threat of Palmer amaranth is during planting, when the cotton is getting established.
Thrips
Thrips are tiny insects that stunt cotton plants, delay the plants' maturity and lessen yield potential, but thrip impact can also be reduced through the use of rye as a cover crop. University entomologist Phillip Roberts says thrip populations are reduced because of the amount of residue on the ground. The more the soil is covered--specifically with rye--the greater the reduction.
"So what does this mean in terms of management?" Roberts asked. "When using the rolled rye system, we still encourage growers to use a preventative insecticide at planting for thrips. In most situations, though, this provides acceptable control, and there is not a need for a supplemental foliar spray."
Thrips are cotton farmers' most consistent and predictable pest. Thrips feed in the terminal bud of a cotton plant, causing malformation in the leaves and crinkling as they develop. In severe cases, thrips damage results in stand losses.
For more information about conservation tillage, see caes.uga.edu.

Foundation asks farmers to donate old tractors

Got an old tractor rusting away on your farm? The Pinky Swear Foundation wants it, whether it's running or not. You'll get a hefty tax deduction for your generosity, and the nonprofit foundation will use the proceeds from the sale of the tractor to help the families of children with cancer cover the everyday expenses that often fall by the wayside during treatment. Those can include rent or a mortgage payment, an overdue utility bill, or even just a tank of gas for the car.
According to the foundation, the IRS allows tractor owners who donate their equipment to charity to claim a tax deduction of up to $500 or the amount of payment the charity receives from the sale of the tractor, if that payment exceeds $500.
"Our goal is to help reduce stress in the entire family," said Wesley Myrick, community development representative for Pinky Swear in Atlanta.
The foundation started with a pinky swear between nine-year-old Mitch Chepokas and his Dad, Steve. Mitch was in the hospital being treated for

bone cancer in December of 2002 when he overheard the family next to him discussing the fact that they would not have the money to give Christmas gifts that year.
Mitch told his father he wanted to withdraw the $6,000 he had in savings and share it with his fellow patients. He put the money in envelopes signed: "Love Mitch, XOXOXO." Mitch and
his father delivered the envelopes to every child on the pediatric oncology floor of the hospital putting them on nightstands, slipping them under doors or leaving them on beds.
According to the foundation, Mitch enjoyed the act of giving so much that he asked his father to join him in doing it again the next year. When Steve

reminded him of the reality of his situation Mitch's prognosis for survival was poor Mitch made his father pinky swear that he would continue to help kids with cancer. Steve Chepokas founded Pinky Swear after Mitch died in the spring of 2003.
Since its inception, the foundation has given more than $4.5 million to children with cancer and their families. Myrick said the foundation puts 77 cents of every dollar raised into its donation pool, and while giving is accomplished in a variety of ways, the foundation does still disperse some donations directly to families in envelopes, as Mitch did.
In addition to direct donations of cash and old farm equipment and cars, Pinky Swear hosts kids' triathlons all over the country. The foundation's first Atlanta triathlon will be Aug. 23 at the West Gwinnett Park Aquatic Center.
To learn more about the triathlon as well as the tax benefits of donating an old tractor to Pinky Swear, visit the foundation online at pinkyswear.org; call Myrick at 404.587.3940; or email Wesley.Myrick@pinkyswear.org.

Is There Any Cure for the Backyard Blueberry Blues?

Howard Hufstetler of Canton looks forward to his backyard blueberry harvest every summer. Trouble is, thieving birds do, too, and they often beat Hufstetler to the picking.
"They are cleaning up," Hufstetler said, and nothing he's tried has deterred the birds from devouring his berries "right when they get a good red on."
He's tried scare tape, reflective Mylar ribbons staked around bushes or lightly tied to the branches to float on the wind and catch the sun. The movement and the flashes of light are thought to serve as visual deterrents to birds. They don't, Hufstetler said. Neither does a scarecrow.
Fellow backyard growers can empathize with Hufstetler's plight, and so can scientists. Cornell University in New York has tried a long list of tactics without hitting upon the one guaranteed method for keeping the birds at bay. In fact, Cornell researchers wrapped up a recent dissertation of tried and failed ploys with the advice to plant some extra bushes and install some feeders for the birds, grab a pair of binoculars and what blueberries remain, then settle down in a shady spot nearby and do some bird watching.
Mike Evans, director of the Georgia Department of Agriculture's Plant Protection Program, said he started his homegrown blueberry patch with three plants. He estimated that he lost three berries to the birds for every one he harvested for himself.
"I have since planted additional bushes, which seems to only result in more birds," he said.
He tried placing rubber snakes in the bushes. They didn't work.

Shiny pie pans or CDs tied to the branches might work if installed right at harvest, he said. Flash tape or old VHS tapes cut into strips and tied to the bushes would offer more movement than the rubber snake trick, he said, although Hufstetler found no success with that method.
Netting to cover the bushes is the most reliable way to keep the birds away, according to Arty Schronce, gardening expert for the Georgia Department of Agriculture.
"There is commercial bird netting that you can cover blueberries with to prevent

the birds from getting to the fruit," he said. "However, the birds can sometimes land on the netting and pluck ripe berries that are within beak reach."
Many growers install netting on a framework to cover the bushes, but it should go all the way to the ground to prevent birds from getting underneath and becoming trapped, Evans advised.
While commercial growers often find success with dramatic scare tactics such as air cannons or recordings of distress calls from members of the same species of birds

who frequent their orchards, outsmarting the birds is a form of deterrence best suited to residential growers who wish to have their blueberries and the goodwill of their neighbors, too.
Schronce advised minding the old adage: One for the blackbird, one for the crow, one for the cutworm and one to grow.
"Plant `sacrificial' blueberries somewhere else on your property and let the birds have them. The birds may go for the easy pickings and avoid the ones with the netting and scare devices," Schronce said.
Put a birdbath near the sacrificial berries to further distract the birds from your own berry bushes. Experts think that birds eat fruit, especially moist fruit like grapes, for the water and the nutrition when the weather is hot and dry. Giving them water and their own food source may keep them from stealing yours.
"The more time birds spend away from the blueberries you want to pick either bathing, drinking or eating something else the more likely you are to get some for yourself," Schronce said.

LOVEJOY

through the city government's ID card program, and residents of Clayton County pay a discounted price. The store is open to everyone, and the prices are low, even for visitors. Any profits are turned back into the garden.
A staff of three and a cadre of volunteers work the garden alongside inmates from the Clayton County Detention Center, which keeps a waiting list of inmates who sign up for the privilege of farming in Lovejoy. The atmosphere in the fields is wholesome and educational, Cartwright said.
"You've got to realize that it's hard, hard work," he said of the endeavor so many

undertake willingly. "I can tell you how to plant it, water it, fertilize it, but I can't make you the kind of person who will get up early in the morning and stay late every night."
Despite the long hours, volunteers report daily with smiles on their faces. The garden has inspired Sunday socials in the park, to which Cartwright recently added homemade Amish-style ice cream churned with a 1931 John Deere hit-and-miss engine bought from an advertiser in the Farmers & Consumers Market Bulletin.
Lovejoy is a bucolic `burb south of Atlanta, home to about 6,000 souls in a city just over two square miles in size.
"Lovejoy's about as close to Mayberry as you're going to get," Cartwright said.
And Cartwright is about as close to a reallife Sherriff Andy Taylor as you're likely to

find in this day and time. The streets of his city are clean of unsightly debris, and their grassy shoulders and medians are always freshly mowed. Legal offenses worthy of an appearance before the city judge carry a sentence of time served tending the vegetables and fruits that grow in the city garden.
Councilwoman Carp recalled working the garden alongside some youthful recipients of

the city's unique form of justice who took to her instruction enthusiastically.
"They asked me, `Miss Mary Ann, do you know any garden songs?' so I taught them `Old MacDonald Had a Farm,''' Carp recalled.
They sang while they worked and even inserted their own lyrics as they moved from row to row, picking pole beans to a beat.
Mayor Cartwright, it would seem, has managed to turn back time while still keeping his city marching forward. His hope, he said, is that all who visit the Lovejoy City Garden are reminded of the times that grew love and joy in their own lives. For him, it was life on the farm, but any good memory will do.
"The thing about this market is, the moment you see it, you go back. Even if you look for just a second, you go back," Cartwright said. "I don't know where you go back to, but you go back."
And back is good, according to Councilwoman Carp.
"This is the way it used to be," she said, "and the way it should be."

If you go ...
