Farmers, public schools ensure that no child

goes hungry during the summer break

By Misty Friedman
Good `ole summertime means no school for thousands of children, but it also means no access to the twice-daily meals served to them during the school day. To fill the gap, many of our local public school systems are offering meals free of charge to all children up to the age of 18 through the Seamless Summer Option program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
According to State School Nutrition Director Nancy Rice, the Seamless Summer Option is valuable to Georgia citizens in that it provides children access to meals through their school system to help keep them healthy and in their best learning mode. Last summer in Georgia, 2.6 million lunches, 1 million breakfasts and 200,000 snacks were served

to school-age children during the summer months.
"The summer feeding program helps lessen the hardship that is created for families of limited means when school breaks for summer," said Dr. Cleta Long, school nutrition director for Bibb County. "One of the biggest benefits of the Seamless Summer Option is that it provides the necessary nutrition for students to retain what they have learned throughout the school year."
Bibb County will serve approximately 250,000 lunches, breakfasts or snacks during a six-week period this summer. The program will reach about one-third of Bibb County's total student enrollment, serving meals and snacks at more than 100 sites.
Not only does the Seamless Summer Option program benefit our students, but many

participating school systems highlight Georgia produce and products on the available menus. Through White County Schools' participation in the Feed My School for a Week program, School Nutrition Director Abby Rowland has developed relationships with local farmers that will continue to provide menu items for the summer meal menus. Feed My

School for a Week is a program of the Georgia Department of Agriculture that links farmers with schools to educate children about food production and to help them make healthy local food choices.
To check the availability of the Seamless Summer Option in your area, please go to www.fns.usda.gov/summerfoodrocks. You may also contact your local school system's school nutrition department about their participation in the program. In most cases, an adult meal is available for a small charge.
If you have questions please contact your local school system or email Misty.Friedman@agr.georgia.gov.

coordinator for the Georgia Department of
Agriculture.

Fuel pump scam spreading throughout the Southeast prompts

warnings, action by Georgia Department of Agriculture

By Emani Odumosu
In response to the recent outbreak of credit card skimming at gas station pumps in Florida, Georgia fuel pump inspectors are now required to check these machines for possible threats.
Florida Today reports that more than 100 skimmer devices were found among the 7,500 gas stations inspected by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer services.
With Florida being so close to home, the Georgia Department of Agriculture is taking immediate action to prevent this crime from crossing the Florida-Georgia state line.
According to Richard Lewis, director of the Fuel and Measures Division of the Georgia Department of Agriculture, skimmers have been found in Georgia but not by state inspec-

tors. As more skimmers are detected in neighboring states including Alabama and Tennessee Georgia inspectors are now on high alert as well.
"[There haven't been any occurrences] that we have found. This is a brand new thing for us," Lewis said. "We are on the lookout."
Card skimming is relatively easy and detecting the device is nearly impossible just by looking at a fuel pump from the outside.
"They have to place [the skimmers] inside the cabinet of the dispenser. Identity thieves have somehow been able to gain access to the inside of the cabinets," Lewis explained.
The installation can take less than two minutes, which makes for an easy process without being caught. A lot of the time, scammers will choose busy gas stations with little to no se-

curity. "They go to a dispenser that is furthest
away from the store, not in a good line of sight from the clerks," Lewis said. "They quickly open the cabinet, place the device inside, and they're gone."
There are many chains in the state that are starting to place alarms or security measures on their pumps.
"A lot of the bigger chains have placed alarms on their pump so that if the cabinet is illegally opened it will alert the cashier or, in some cases, shut down the pump," Lewis said.
If a skimming device is found during a routine state inspection, a Stop-Sale order is issued by the department of agriculture. This means that the pump is "locked" and inacces-

GEORGIA GROWN PROFILE: Little River Produce grows strong

By Morgan Davis
Like his father before him, Dee Ritter is a farmer. Like generations of citizens of Lake Park, a bucolic community close to the Georgia-Florida line, Ritter grew up growing things in the rich soil of South Georgia's coastal plain. Founded by farmers in the 1820s, Lake Park is known for a number of agricultural commodities, including Ritter's own bell peppers.
For the last 12 years, Ritter and family have been in the business of growing, packing and distributing those famous bell peppers along with squash, zucchini, eggplant, cucumbers, tomatoes, field peas and peanuts through Little River Produce.
"I'm proud of how we grow it and how we

pack it," Ritter said. "One of our top priorities is to make sure consumers know they are buying a safe product to take home to their families."
In addition to packing and distributing, Little River Produce operates a pick-yourown operation that offers seasonal crops of
tomatoes and other vegetables for families who like to participate in the gathering of their food.
Little River has two growing seasons for wholesale produce: spring, starting around the first of April and ending around July 4th; and fall, beginning in September and finishing after Thanksgiving. It's a busy year-round operation, but one worth the work, Ritter said. "Georgia agriculture is a great industry and

I'm proud to be a part of it," Ritter said. Little River Produce is a proud member of
Georgia Grown, Ritter said, and he's committed to giving back to the state and promoting Georgia agriculture.

GUEST COLUMN: A college student's
passion for helping refugees
can help farmers meet their need
for labor
By Aladdin Kanawati

I began working with refugees in Clarkston, Ga.,

when I was 16. The U.S. State Department chose

Clarkston as one of several resettlement cities for

international refugees in the 1990s, leading some to

give it the nickname "The Ellis Island of the South."

Clarkston High School students hail from more than

54 countries and speak 47 languages.

KANAWATI

While many programs are in place to help the

refugees assimilate in America, there are not many

job opportunities available to resettled residents. Many of them really

want to work but are at a loss due to language barriers that make work

in a corporate or retail setting impossible. Many of these refugees were

farmers, handymen or manufacturers in their home countries. They pos-

sess the skills needed to work, yet lack transportation or the ability to find

employers close by.

When I realized the need for manual labor in Georgia, as well as the

need for work in Clarkston, I was able to become the bridge for the two. I

believe in putting people to work, and that led me to start KNWT Trans-

port, a transportation/referral organization that connects established em-

ployers with refugees in search of economic peace of mind in America.

Our main partners in assisting the refugee community are the Interna-

tional Rescue Committee, as well as Jewish Family and Career Services.

Each of these organizations assists in the placement and settlement

of refugees in Clarkston and fully supports our methods of putting these

refugees to work on farms in Georgia. Our partners serve as "human re-

sources" for us and direct refugees in need of work to us. We then connect

these refugees to organizations in need of manual labor.

Refugees are eligible to work in the United States upon arrival under

accordance with the refugee act of 1980. This act was an agreement be-

tween the United States and the United Nations.

For more information or inquiries into our service, please contact me

at 678.314.0525 or akanawati1@gmail.com.

--Aladdin Kanawati was born in Austin, Texas, to Syrian immigrants. He has lived in Atlanta since he was 8 and began his work with refugees when he was 16. Aladdin is currently a student at Georgia State University studying nonprofit management and governance. His hopes are to put as many people to work as he can through his company, KNWT Transport.

ARTY'S GARDEN: For mo(Arelrmecoipsets)oretvoelerayrnbaobdouyt Jluonvees colorful, easy-to-grow zinnias

By Arty Schronce

Dairy Month, please visit us online at

www.southeastdairy.org

One of the prettiest zinnia plantings I ever saw was at an

auto repair shop in an industrial section of Atlanta. Next to a

gray metal building were hundreds of colorful zinnias rebuk-

ing their drab surroundings.

That's what I like about zinnias. They don't rely on

subtlety or refined beauty that requires careful examination to

the point of meditation. Their presence is immediately noted

and their purpose is self-explanatory. They can turn an ugly,

grease-stained garage into a garden.

And they're easy to grow.

A friend tells me I grow the best zinnias. I'm not comfort-

able with that; they all but take care of themselves. I sowed seeds years ago and they have been with me ever since. I collect and scatter a few seeds in the fall. In spring and early summer, I remove or relocate seedlings that sprouted in inap-

season. By then it is usually time to remove the old plants. I

have never considered spraying fungicides. Although almost everyone loves zinnias, they don't agree
on one pronunciation. ZEEN-ya, ZIN-ee-a and ZIN-ya are accepted. People don't take sides over the pronunciation the way they do over "pecan."
I don't know why zinnias are sometimes called "old maids." I never heard the name before coming to Georgia. Perhaps schoolchildren brought bouquets for their teachers (at one time, female teachers were forbidden to marry) and the flowers became associated with them. Another common name, "cut-and-come-again," is easy to understand since zinnias are excellent cut flowers and will produce more flowers after cutting.
The most popular zinnias and the ones with the greatest range of colors descend from Zinnia elegans. Other species are available. Narrow-leaf or creeping zinnia (Zinnia angustifolia) is primarily brassy orange or white. Mexican zinnia (Zinnia haageana) is known for its bicolored flowers. Peruvian zinnia (Zinnia peruviana) is an old charmer that is making a comeback. Expect more colors and forms in the future as hybridizers work with all of these.

AgBriefs
News of Georgia's agriculture industry, gathered from sources throughout the state.
New law requires safety chains on trailers
A new bill, signed by Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal, requires drivers to secure trailers to their vehicles with safety chains. The bill, which takes effect July 1, was prompted by the death of a young Fayette County mother who was killed last fall when a runaway trailer struck her vehicle.
Rep. John Yates, R-Griffin, advanced the trailer safety chain bill (HB 123) after Tiphanie Fletcher's mother visited him at the state Capitol. Fletcher was killed as a result of an unchained trailer slipping loose from the truck ball. The ball was later found to be the incorrect size for the trailer hitch.
"This law will require that all registered trailers, those with a license plate, be adequately and safely attached to the vehicle while being towed," said Frank Watson, the University of Georgia Extension coordinator in Wilkes County.
Watson said trailer owners must ensure their trailer has a safety chain or cable as a safety backup to the primary hitch connection. A trailer can be retrofitted with safety chains for about $50, he said.
"Commodity trailers, like peanut wagons or cotton wagons, are exempt," he said. "For the most part, people will need to retrofit older or homemade trailers with safety chains if they do not have them."
Watson hopes trailer owners will see the necessity of the new regulations. "There is certainly a safety issue with trailers that don't have safety chains," he said. "I daresay that the attorney for an injured party would show no mercy to someone whose trailer caused an accident that could have been prevented by safety chains." Violating the code is a misdemeanor. For more information on trailer safety, see the national extension publication at www. extension.org/pages/64391/livestock-trailer-safety#.VV41MFlVhBc. -Sharon Dowdy, University of Georgia, College of Agricultural and Environmental

State Botanical Garden celebrates National Pollinator Week
The State Botanical Garden of Georgia, a public service and outreach unit of the University of Georgia, will celebrate National Pollinator Week, which is June 1521, with a webinar on June 9 from 1-2 p.m. in the garden's administration building auditorium followed by an hour long walk through the Pollinator Garden led by botanical garden naturalists. Both events are free and open to the public.
The webinar will feature pollinator expert Stephen Buchmann, an entomologist and adjunct scientist at the University of Arizona and international director for the Pollinator Partnership, an organization dedicated exclusively to the protection of pollinators and their ecosystems.
Buchmann's presentation will explore the complex relationships between plants and pollinators and discuss the global threats to pollinator health.
Pollinator Week was started eight years ago and has since grown into an international celebration of the importance of pollinators. Without pollinators, 30 percent of food crops would disappear, including many of the fruits and vegetables popular in the U.S. Pollinators support the plants that clean the air, stabilize soils, buffer severe weather events and support other wildlife.
For more information or to register for the events, see http://tinyurl.com/ sbgpollinate.

Place wonton wrappers in muffin cups and brown lightly in a 350 degree oven for 5 minutes or until lightly browned. Spoon approximately 1 tablespoon of the chicken mixture in each wonton cup and sprinkle with cheese mixture. Return to oven and bake 5 to 10 minutes or until heated through.

sible to customers. The store clerk is then notified and instructed to immediately report the case to local law enforcement. Georgia fuel inspections are conducted about every 18 months.
In the meantime, consumers can minimize their chances of being a victim of card skimming at the gas pump by:
Paying with cash. This is the surest way to prevent scammers from obtaining your card information. However, if a card is your only option, use a credit card as opposed to a debit card. Credit cards offer greater protection from fraud than debit cards.
Choose a pump close to the store and within view of the clerk. Scammers are less likely to manipulate dispensers close to convenience store windows.
Pay inside. It is less convenient but much safer than paying at the pump.

farmers and consumers market Bulletin 404-656-3722 agr.georgia.gov

Dear Dairy Diary,

Dairy farmers are early to rise. While I'm not a dairy farmer, I do keep similar hours. My name is Nicole Karstedt, and I am the Mobile Dairy Classroom Coordinator for the Georgia Dairy Farmers. They've entrusted me with a 30-foot trailer called the Mobile Dairy Classroom, which contains a fully operational milking parlor. I visit about 150 schools and special events each year, taking a live cow along for the ride to give elementary school children in grades K- 5 (and their teachers, parents and friends) a personal lesson in all things milk and dairy.
May 4th:
I left my home in Farmington, Ga., near Watkinsville, early so that I could beat Atlanta traffic as I traveled to Berry College in Rome. Berry College Dairy Manager Iris Barham and a few of the working students there had a Jersey named "Berry's Prescott Whiskey" picked out for me to take to my school visit for the day. Although she was a pretty shade of golden brown, we decided the name Molly might be more appropriate for a group of elementary students.
We loaded the cow and her feed for the day and I turned on the air conditioner for the short trip to West Side Elementary School in Cedartown. Cows are most comfortable whxen the temperature is about 43 degrees, so air-conditioning and fans are helpful in keeping the cows that ride on the trailer comfortable.
As I waited for everyone to be seated at West Side, I overheard a little girl tell her neighbor that the cow was a chocolate milk cow. Her neighbor argued that there was no such thing and she said her Grandpa told her brown cows give chocolate milk, a common misconception among students. She later learned during the demonstration that even the brown cows give white milk.
The students oohed and aahed when I attached the milking machine to the cow and her milk flowed into a clear milk jug. A few admitted they thought cows were still milked by hand in a red barn.
After the school visit, I returned to Berry College and took the cow back to the dairy farm.

May 5th:
Back to Berry I go to pick up Molly (AKA Whiskey) and take her to Dade County Farm Day in Trenton, Ga. As the Mobile Dairy Classroom Coordinator, I cover the whole state of Georgia. This my sixth year operating the classroom, but this was the first time I traveled to the extreme Northwest corner of the state. I drove from Rome through the mountains -- even through Alabama for a few miles -- and then back into Georgia to get there. After returning the cow to Berry College, I returned home in Farmington that evening and cleaned the trailer, removing the dirty shavings, put fresh bedding and hay in, and filled the water tank for the next morning.
May 6th:
I visited Heard Elementary in Macon. Theresa Cantrell, who works for the Bibb County Board of Education, has done a great job over the school year scheduling the Mobile Dairy Classroom to visit all of the elementary schools in Bibb County. When I arrived at Heard Elementary, there were three local news station crews onsite and I immediately wished I had put make-up on that day. Kids and cows don't seem to care if I wear it, but local television is a great opportunity to promote Georgia Dairy Farmers and their Mobile Dairy Classroom.
Our borrowed cow that day was a big Holstein named Savannah who literally trotted to get on the trailer. She was so excited about going and being the center of attention, just like when she was a show heifer. She was from Teresa and Judd Chambers' Dairy in Macon. Judd Chambers also serves on the commodity commission board.
At Heard Elementary School, there was actually a little girl named Savannah in the crowd that day. She was smiling ear-to-ear to learn she shared a name with the star of our show. The Mobile Dairy visit was an early kick-off for Feed My School and I saw several students proudly wearing Georgia Grown T-shirts. We talked about all of the dairy products that we can make from milk. Ice cream is a big favorite, especially on a hot spring day in Macon.

May 8th:
Today Jolly and I visited Claxton Elementary. I picked up Jolly the night before and kept her at a fairgrounds close by so as to cut down on her travel and trailer time the day of the visit. Jolly is owned by eight-year-old Brady Yoder. She is part of a 120-cow herd owned by Brady's dad.
The first graders at Claxton were shocked to learn that Jolly was about their age. Jolly is 5 years old and has had three calves thus far. The boys and girls were also shocked to learn that Jolly eats the equivalent of 400 Happy Meals a day, washed down with a bath-tub-full of water. One little boy said he could eat that much and licked his lips and rubbed his belly.
May 9th:
Today we visited Jaemor Farm's Strawberry Festival! We picked up a cow from Mike and Nick Haynes at the Muddy H Dairy in Gainesville. The weather was perfect and the strawberries were ripe and beautiful. They had a great turn-out with 3,000+ people in attendance that day. We love teaching students where milk comes from but Jaemor's Strawberry Festival was a great opportunity to talk to moms and dads about dairy products and answer their questions about dairy farming practices and dairy products. The way that some companies market their dairy products sometimes sounds confusing. We want parents to shop confidently knowing any milk or dairy products they choose to purchase -- from conventional milk to organic to locally bottled milk -- is antibiotic and hormone FREE and safe for their families to enjoy and make a part of their daily diets to encourage health and strong bones.
National Dairy Month!
June is National Dairy Month, which makes it an exciting time for the Mobile Dairy Classroom. We have 15+ visits booked for June all over the state. During the school year, we visit about 110 schools and attend 20+ fairs and/or festivals. Book a visit from the Mobile Dairy Classroom online at www.milkcow.org.
