Help for Haiti:

Consul General Seeks Aid for Haiti's Farmers in the Form of Work on Georgia Farms

Faustin Lebon, Sarah Williamson and Gandy Thomas at the 2015 Georgia Grown Symposium in Perry April 30.

By Amy H. Carter
Gandy Thomas, consul general for the Republic of Haiti in Atlanta, believes Haitian farmers may be the answer to the seasonal labor woes that Georgia farmers perennially face. Since Haiti joined the H-2A Visa program in 2012, the country has found a sustainable form of aid to fund the country's ongoing recovery from the deadly earthquake that struck the island nation in 2010, said Sarah Petrin Williamson, managing director of Protect the People, an international humanitarian aid program that is working with Haiti to bring skilled migrant farm labor to the U.S.
Thomas and Williamson attended the 2015 Georgia Grown Symposium hosted by the Georgia Department of Agriculture on April 30 in Perry to discuss the work exchange program with leaders of the state's agricultural industry. The consulate is working with Protect the People to sponsor a H-2A training session June 6 and a complimentary trips to Haiti from Georgia June 7-10 for prospective employers. Williamson said the program is already helping farmers in South Georgia, and is poised to

expand into the middle and northern regions of the state.
Faustin Lebon, who handles religious outreach for the Consulate General of Haiti in Atlanta, said the H-2A labor exchange program is giving Haitian farmers the money and the expanded knowledge they'll need to rebuild Haiti's agricultural sector. Major crops in Haiti include onions, potatoes, lettuce, tomatoes, corn, okra and sugar cane.
Thomas said the country's farmers hope to be self-sufficient in poultry production within the next five years, but Haiti currently relies heavily on Georgia for the import of chickens. According to the International Organization for Migration, Haitians consume more than 1 million eggs per day. Goats are Haiti's No. 1 meat and dairy source, outnumbering by 1 million the number of cows owned by farm families.
While Haiti's participation in the H-2A program and its outreach to Georgia farmers is relatively new, Thomas said the nation's presence in this state goes way back, most notably to the Revolutionary War. The Chas-

As workforce ages, timber industry finds it difficult to recruit young loggers

By Amy H. Carter
If money grew on trees, loggers would be the richest men on earth. These days, however, they'd be happy just to break even.
"Logging is honest-to-God a dying breed," said Trevor Crosby, owner of Echols Timber Harvesting based in Lake Park. "All these older men, they can't keep logging, much as they want to."
So it's up to younger men like Crosby a business owner at 20 to take their place. He's one of the few young men willing and able to commit his time and resources to the industry.
"The financial strain to get into the timber business is tremendous," said Chad Nimmer, a procurement forester for Pierce

Timber Co. in Blackshear. "It is becoming more of a strain for a young man ... to find a lender who would go out and be able to legally finance him."
Timber is still a big business in Georgia. According to Tom Harris, professor of forest business management at the Warnell School of Forestry at UGA, Georgia and Oregon are near the top of the softwood lumber and softwood pulp and paper business in the country.
"We also have a pretty good sized hardwood industry in the state," Harris said.
Dr. Dale Greene, interim dean of UGA's Warnell School of Forestry, said Georgia has more acres in forest cover than it did 50 years ago.
"We are growing more tons per year See LOGGING, page 12

Georgia Grown Profile:

South Georgia Pecan Co. is nuts for one of the state's top crops

By Market Bulletin Staff
You probably say pih-KAHN. I say PEEkan. We both know people who say puh-KAN. But no matter how you pronounce it, there's no disputing the creativity that South Georgia Pecan puts into packaging and marketing one of Georgia's No. 1 crops. Since 1913 the Valdostabased company has put Georgia pecans on the map.
The company was founded by the Pearlman Family in the heart of Georgia pecan country. In the late 1960s Beatrice Foods which once owned Tropicana, among other notable food and consumer brands bought South Georgia Pecan. In 1983, Beatrice sold the company to the Worn family who still own and operate it to this day.
President and CEO Jim Worn and his son Jeff, who serves as vice president, oversee an

operation that shells 200,000 pounds of pecans daily.
"We vertically integrate the pecan crop from off-the-farm processing all the way to the bag or box in a variety of different flavors," Jeff Worn
says. "South Georgia Pecan holds the highest possible food safety rating, SQF Level III, and is committed to product quality."
The company is also committed to growing the Georgia's pecan industry, which is one of the

reasons why it joined Georgia Grown. "We believe anything we could support that
will help our industry grow is worth supporting," Jeff Worn said.
Georgia is the largest producer of pecans in the country, he said, and that's no small accomplishment in a state with such a large but largely unrecognized agricultural presence.
"I think Ag makes up a much larger portion of the state's economy than the public realizes and there are farmers and companies right here in Georgia doing some great things and growing in big ways," he said.
South Georgia Pecan offers 15 different flavors of PEE-cans, from honey roasted halves to chocolate toffee and even pecan meal. They package Georgia pecans as wedding favors, for soldiers, and in gift baskets, boxes and tins. They also market almonds, cashews, peanuts, pistachios. Learn more at www.georgiapecan.com.

Guest Column:
A Grassroots Effort to Help Third-World Farmers Grows in Georgia

By Chelsey Argo

The Goat Project is a

new outreach program

based here in Georgia.

Our mission is to teach

sustainable agriculture

in third-world countries

around the globe. A

handful of passionate,

ARGO

like-minded people from Georgia and New

Jersey (Berry College brought us together)

started this program in 2014, and we plan to

expand as more volunteers join the mission

and the project gains increased awareness

and funding.

In third-world countries where malnutri-

tion is a constant threat, teaching simple

agriculture practices to a community can

be life-changing. The Goat Project aims to

establish sustainable livestock production in

small communities, providing the necessary

training and leadership to members of these

communities so that the goats are a way of

life.

Our first community outreach program is already in motion in Marbial, Haiti. Marbial is a small, remote community located deep in the mountains of Haiti. To reach it volunteers are required to travel for two days from the capital city of Port-au-Prince. Travel into the mountains is primarily along a riverbed, which means the journey can only be made in the dry season, between December and March. The remaining months make up the rainy season when the riverbed fills up. Even during the dry season the trip is difficult for vehicles to drive the entire distance. Trucks will travel as close as possible (determined often by weather) and the last leg of the journey into the community is conducted on foot and/or pack donkeys.
The Goat Project's first trip to Marbial took place in December 2014; the second was made this past March. A third trip is planned for Dec. 2015, marking the third and final phase of a three-step plan to ensure that residents of Marbial have received the proper training and resources to sustain the project on their own.
During Phase One of the project, the

group purchased goats for school children and additional goats for a "control group." A Goat Committee was established to oversee the control group, made up of a select group of adults from the community who will eventually be the leaders of the project as they continue to sustain it after the volunteers have completed their work.
Each goat was tagged, vaccinated, dewormed, and documented in a notebook so we could note progress or areas we may need to cover in more detail upon return.
Additional goats and more supplies were delivered during Phase Two of the project in March. We followed the same protocol for the new goats and followed up with each goat from Phase One, documenting what we found. The goats from Phase One were healthy and several had successfully birthed baby goats. None were malnourished. We see this as a major success.
The Goat Project's volunteers spent time during Phase Two teaching in the school, delving into more details as the community began to better understand the concepts. Marbial community members have been

introduced to new concepts, such as milking the goats, knowing when to wean, and how to cut hay.
For our final trip in December we hope to teach the Goat Committee to vaccinate on their own, how to recognize signs and symptoms of livestock sickness and to be completely hands-on and competent on their own to sustain this project.
Donations to The Goat Project are 100 percent tax-deductible and fund volunteer travel and accommodations, as well as all the necessary purchases required for the trip to each particular community, such as the purchase of livestock, vaccinations, and teaching materials. To learn more, visit www. gofundme.com/tp73k3k8.
Chelsey Argo is a compliance specialist in the Department's Food Safety Program. She is based in Gainesville, Ga. A resident of Rome, she assists with The Goat Project in her free time and hopes to bring greater awareness to the importance of teaching agriculture practices to communities in third-world countries around the world.

ARTY'S GARDEN: Copper iris a penny for your thoughts

Have you ever thought of growing a brown flower? Copper iris (Iris fulva) has been described as brown, brick red, terra-cotta, rust, salmon and cinnamon. The fulva of its botanical name means "tawny," or brownishorange. Famed garden writer Elizabeth Lawrence described it as "dragons-blood red, an odd color that is hard to place in the borders and is impossible with other irises." She has a point. When copper iris blooms in April and May, it can strike a dissonant tone with some spring flowers, especially pink and crimson ones. And, I admit, the little copper iris can look like a poor relation next to its larger and showier bearded cousins. Personally I haven't met an iris I didn't like. And one of the reasons I like the copper iris is because it is a little odd. It is as if the iris has transformed red clay directly into a flower. Someone claiming it is difficult to use only makes me want to find a way to use it. Copper iris is native primarily along the Mississippi from Louisiana to Illinois, although it has also been found in Ohio, Texas, Florida, Alabama and Georgia. It naturally grows in moist to wet areas including sloughs, ditches and bald cypress swamps. However, in the garden it will tolerate regular soil. It reaches two to three feet tall (mine are only two) and has bright green leaves. John James Audubon placed a pair of Northern parula warblers perching on the stem of a copper iris in a painting that became an entry in The Birds of North America. He didn't seem to have trouble with any color clash between bird and bloom. I have grown copper irises for about 20 years and, in addition to them being a delightfully different flower, they are durable and easy to grow. I have some at my spigot along with ostrich, maidenhair and Christmas ferns. This spot gets little sun, which encourages me to try a few in even shadier areas to see how they will perform. I have another clump thriving in almost full sun and away from supplemental water. That group is through blooming before the other perennials around it begin. However, I can see moving it closer to my blue baptisia (Baptisia australis) and Arkansas amsonia (Amsonia hubrictii). The cool pastel blue of the amsonia and the

violet-blue of the baptisia would pair well with any iris, even a copper one.
I can imagine planting copper iris with colors on the warmer end of the spectrum, perhaps with earlyblooming daylilies such as "Apricot," "Gold Dust" and "Orangeman." I would also like to try it with "Cherries Jubilee" baptisia, a new hybrid with maroon and yellow flowers. Elizabeth Lawrence eventually found the color of copper iris "charming" with the red and yellow of Eastern columbine; an excellent suggestion.
Arty Schronce is the Department's resident gardening expert. He always keeps his eyes open for unusual irises and grows Algerian, Louisiana and bearded irises in addition to copper irises in his Atlanta garden.

HAITI: Exchange helps recovery

seurs-Volontaires de Saint-Domingue was comprised of 750 Haitian freedmen who volunteered to help America win its fight for independence from the British. They engaged in several battles along the Southeastern coastline and were the largest military unit to serve in the Siege of Savannah in 1779. Their contributions are memorialized by a monument erected in their honor in 2007 in Savannah's historic Franklin Square. Today Georgia counts some 80,000 Haitian-Americans among its population. Thomas said many are second-generation citizens who think of themselves as "Americans and Haitians both."
Migrant laborers sent to Georgia farms are recruited by the International Organization for Migration, an affiliate of the United Nations that works with the Haitian Ministry of Agriculture. According to Protect the People, Haitian crew leaders speak English and Spanish, while workers speak Creole. PTP and IOM provide translation and cultural support to employers.

From the Kitchen of ...
(Editor's Note: In our previous issue we published a request from an anonymous reader in Fanning County who was longing for a taste of her childhood in the form of rice pudding. It was a dish her mother often made, but a difficult recipe to find in this day and time. Several readers not only read of her plea but answered in kind, and this is a sampling of the recipes they so graciously shared. Perhaps you'll find here a new favorite for your family.)

3rd Annual Georgia Grown Symposium Focuses on Innovation and Diversification
Nearly 200 members of the Georgia Grown program gathered at the Georgia National Fairgrounds in Perry April 30 to swap advice on growing a productive and sustainable agriculture-based business. Industry experts and panelists pulled from the ranks of the program's membership rolls discussed certifications, diversification, innovation and future trends during the day-long event sponsored by the Georgia Department of Agriculture.

Sadie and Heath Wetherington of Baker Farms in Norman Park sit on a panel offering advice on "Diversification and Adding Value to Your Farm."

Deanna Bibb, founder of Proper Pepper, a small-batch maker of pimento cheese based in Sandersville, chats with Georgia Grown Executive Chef Holly Chute. Bibb's "Get Back Jack" pimento cheese won a 2015 Flavor of Georgia award from UGA's College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black welcomes the crowd at the start of the symposium, which included a catered barbecue lunch and an exhibit hall featuring the latest products and services available to Georgia's agriculture community.

Paulette Taylor (Sunshine's Berry Farm in Fort Valley) gets a crash course on social media from Kristy Williams (Run to the Farm in Morgan) while waiting for a panel discussion to begin.

Rivals on the football field make for innovative partners in the farm field

By Mary Catherine Cromley
Despite being bitter rivals on the playing field, the University of Georgia and Georgia Tech Research Institute have put aside their tradition of "Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate" to launch the "Georgia AgriTechnology Innovation Initiative" in collaboration with the Georgia Department of Agriculture.
The world's population is expected to grow to 9.1 billion by the year 2050, an increase of 2.1 billion people. With the amount of available farmland shrinking every day, more sophisticated agricultural technologies are crucial. Partnerships like the Georgia AgriTechnology Innovation Initiative will ensure that Georgia is at the forefront of new technological and thought advancements in agriculture.
Dr. Scott Angle, dean of UGA's College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, sees a great future through this partnership.

"Georgia Tech has a grand vision for new technology; what they lack is problems to solve. In traditional agriculture particularly we don't have all of the answers. We know that to solve the world's food problems we need some really out-of-the-box thinking, and where that can come from is Georgia Tech," Angle said.
Georgia and California are the only two states in the country that have both a highly ranked ag school and a highly ranked tech school. With California engaged in trying to cure its water shortage, Georgia is in a position to be the leader in agricultural technology and innovation.
"What we do here in Georgia and the way we can integrate technology and agriculture can feed the world," Angle said. "When I look at the issues that are facing us and when I look at the capabilities that we and others have, I believe that a lot of the future ability to produce food is going to depend on what happens right here."

While the Georgia AgriTechnology Initiative is brand new, the idea of UGA and Georgia Tech working together is not. Dr. Doug Britton, current manager of the Agricultural Technology Research Program at Georgia Tech, has been working with UGA for quite some time.
"UGA and Georgia Tech have long partnered in the area of poultry processing. Leveraging UGA's great resources and the expertise of faculty in poultry science and combining them with the expertise in engineering and technology represented by Georgia Tech has allowed us to explore questions and conduct research that we could not do independently," Britton says. "This is what we call fostering innovation at the intersection of traditional disciplines, and we strongly believe that many innovations will result when we enable these types of interactions."
One of the immediate problems facing Georgia agriculture today is the lack of labor

available. To answer this problem, Georgia Tech's Agricultural Technology Research Program is looking at robotic systems such as the Intelligent Cutting and Deboning System. The goal is to turn this system into a bionic poultry deboner. The combination of advanced robotics, image processing, and statistical modeling make it possible for the system to react to its own environment. This technology will allow the agriculture industry to continue becoming more efficient and work towards meeting the needs of the world's rapidly growing population
"The AgriTechnology Innovation Initiative is an effort to drive technology innovations specifically for agriculture. This could include technologies that improve production and processing efficiencies by maximizing the effect of agricultural inputs and minimizing losses," said Britton. "Overall, I think it could fundamentally change the way we manage and view agricultural production and processing."

LOGGING: Tech curriculum teaches business skills

than we're cutting statewide by a healthy margin in hardwood stands," Greene said. "In pine stands we're closer to cutting our growth but we still grow a little more than we harvest."
So there's plenty of wood to meet the demand but not enough labor to deliver it to market. While other industries including banking seem to be on the mend from the Great Recession of 2008, the loggers who harvest and transport the raw materials for the nation's construction industry, pulp and paper manufacturers, and biofuel producers are seeing their ranks dwindle.
"We are directly tied to loggers. We don't make any money without them," said Derrick Herring, owner of Flatwoods Forest Products, a timber dealer based in Echols County.
Nimmer and Herring contract with independent logging crews to harvest the timber they market. When the housing market crashed and the banking industry tightened

the purse strings, loggers were among the first to suffer; they're among the few who continue to suffer now that the economy is stabilizing, both men said.
"There are some good loggers that want to have the opportunity to own and operate their own business that I think would be good managers, but they face such uphill battles trying to get financing that it deters them," Herring said.
Georgia offers many other enticing job opportunities to young people today, said Greene of the Warnell School. They don't have to get out and fight for the opportunity to make a living the way their parents and grandparents once did.
"As you get closer to the coast in particular you've got the ports, you've got other industries that are competitive. They have a variety of industries to choose from," Greene said.
Regulations, too, make it much tougher to go into business. Logging crews include com-

mercial truck drivers who must be insurable. That means a clean driving record and a clean drug test.
"That can cut out two-thirds of your labor pool in some areas," Greene said. "(Timber harvest) production could be 25 percent higher if they could hire truck drivers. They can't get moved all the wood they cut."
Mechanization has actually helped to improve the prospects for loggers, Greene said, by increasing production, and making it safer and more lucrative by paying higher wages. Technology has also made logging cool, both literally and figuratively.
Feller bunchers, skidders, delimbers and harvesters now come with amenities like air ride seats, CD players and climate controlled cabs. They're insulated and carpeted. Logging, Nimmer said, is finally earning an "appeal factor." It's also getting its place on technical school curriculums. Nimmer, who represents Blackshear in the Georgia General

Assembly, is working with other timber dealers to launch classes in Forest Operations that will allow high school students who are dually enrolled in tech school and post-high school graduates to learn how to make a living and a life as loggers.
"A lot of folks look at logging as `just a job' and we try to let people know it's a career," Nimmer said. "A job is something you take to get by. A career is something you invest your life into."
The goal of the forestry operations course is to teach safety, maintenance, budgeting, and business management. The course will encourage more entrepreneurship in the forestry industry, and produce better citizens, Nimmer said. It will also go a long way toward changing the public's perception of logging.
"Loggers aren't out there just ravaging the land and destroying Bambi's home, if you will. We're creating a new environment where wildlife can grow and flourish," he said.
