Stay on the Beam
When ships "of the high seas" were steered manually, one way the helmsman kept the ship on course was to use its beam, a relative bearing at right angles to the
centerline of the ship's keel.
The Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Eggs can be likened to a ship, and its staff and board of directors, to the crew and helmsmen. In 1961, a group of Georgia egg farmers initiated a movement to establish a marketing order, which was passed by the Georgia Legislature. The Order mandated a

Dickey Farms' Future Peachy with Georgia Grown
Located in the heart of Georgia's peach growing region, Dickey Farms is a third and fourth generation family farm that began in 1897 when Mr. R. L. Dickey planted his first peach tree. Dickey Farms grows twenty varieties of peaches on approximately 1,000 acres located over three counties - Crawford, Monroe and Peach. Dickey Farms harvests one to two varieties of peaches each week throughout the summer, which produces a continuous supply of peaches for their customers.
The company serves as one of South Georgia's most popular agri tourism locations and is known to have some of the best peach ice cream in the state. Visiting Dickey Farms' packinghouse in Musella, Georgia, is almost like taking a step back in time. The packinghouse has a wide porch
with rockers where visitors can watch the packing of the peaches and visit with friends and family at the same time. Open
daily all summer long, Dickey Farms also has fresh vegetables, jams, jellies and other delightfully peachy items for customers.
Dickey Farms grows, packs, and markets primarily for the fresh market grocery stores and wholesale food
Farmers' Markets to Showcase
Ga. Grown Agricultural Products
Farmers and producers from throughout Georgia will feature their products during upcoming showcase events at Georgia State Farmers' Markets in Macon, Atlanta and Savannah, and Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta.
These events are sponsored by the Georgia Department of Agriculture to enable consumers to become familiar with the various markets and the local producers who sell at the facilities.
"The showcases provide a great opportunity for the general public to interact with the farmers and food companies that are producing food
products here in our state," said Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Gary W. Black. "We invite consumers to spend a day with some of our Georgia farmers at one of these area markets and to see, sample, and purchase some of the products they have for sale."
Products on sale may vary by location and time of season, but may include such items as meats; produce; dairy products; processed products, such as jams and jellies; and horticultural products, including trees and shrubs.
The free events also will include food

distributors. The Dickeys grow their own peaches and are fortunate to have delicious Georgia peaches to sell to their retail customers at their packinghouse. The company also has many vendors who buy peaches for their roadside stands here in Georgia as well as in other states.
The Dickeys were delighted to support Georgia Grown because of their passion for Georgia agriculture and the value they see in the program. Cynde Dickey says, "We are proud of our commitment to Georgia agriculture and the Georgia Grown program. Georgia has always been known to grow the best peaches in the US and Georgia peach growers have been proud to promote our fruit as grown in Georgia. Now with the Georgia Grown program, Commissioner Black has been able to encourage vendors and businesses to stock, sell and promote all Georgia grown and produced products. Our fruit and produce in Georgia is the best in the country in taste, in value, in safely grown and in appeal to consumers."
Dickey Farms hopes to utilize Georgia Grown as a networking opportunity and as an outlet to increase awareness of the peach industry. Dickey says, "You can always accomplish more working as a team rather than as an individual farm. So many of the issues and concerns we face at Dickey Farms, other farms and agri-businesses are facing as well. Networking is more vital in agriculture and agri-businesses than any other industry. The Georgia peach growers have always worked together on peach promotion and immigration/employment

Gov. Signs Bill to Create Ga. Grown Commodity Commission
During a ceremony in Glennville April 18, Gov. Nathan Deal signed HB 298, which provides for an Agriculture Commodity Commission for Georgia Grown products.
Funding will come from those producers and agribusinesses who voluntarily choose to utilize the "Georgia Grown" trademark. The bill also makes changes to the Georgia Cotton Commission by increasing producer members of the commission from five to seven.
"Agriculture is Georgia's No. 1 industry, and as governor I want to see that the farmers and producers of our state have every opportunity to succeed," said Deal. "This commission will assist in raising awareness to local and national retailers of the high-quality product that we produce right here at home."
Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black praised the legislation.

Joining Governor Deal (center) for the signing of HB 298 were (l-r): Senator Buddy Carter, Representative Robert Dickey, Senator Tommie Williams, Commissioner Black, Representative Chad Nimmer, and Representative Delvis Dutton.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Advertising Guidelines Bulletin Publishes Every Other Week
All advertisements published in the Market Bulletin must relate to the farming/agricultural industry or be a part thereof; any and all item(s) submitted for sale through the BULLETIN must meet at least one of the following criteria: 1) must be produced by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation, 2) must be made by the advertiser from materials on his/her own farming operation, 3) must be owned and used by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation for a period of at least 90 days prior to offering for sale through the BULLETIN. Businesses, corporations, dealerships or other commercial enterprises are not allowed to place classified advertisements in the MARKET BULLETIN. Commercial is defined as intended for mass market; handling large quantities of product for distribution (i.e., more than normal household or farm quantities); supported by advertisement (I.e., advertisement in publications other than the BULLETIN; listed as "business" in telephone directories or "yellow pages", etc.). Other indicators include, but are not limited to, holding business licenses and holding regulatory licenses/permits/registrations. Georgia residents only may advertise in the Market Bulletin with the following exception: out-of-state residents may advertise only in the Out-of-State Wanted category. The editor has the authority to designate the length of ads and the number of ads that may be placed by a family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Currently, only one (1) notice may be placed by any family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Family unit refers to all individuals sharing the same residence, address or telephone number. Ads must be received no later than designated deadline in order to appear in the following issue. Ads submitted via our website will be scheduled automatically for the next available issue. Ads will be published only once each time submitted unless the advertiser specifies on the notice that the ad is to be published more than once. Ads may be published for two (2) consecutive issues. A new notice must be submitted if the advertiser wants the advertisement to continue more than two issues. Note: Some ad categories are published infrequently and are published only once per submission. Please check ad category headings for publication frequency prior to submitting notice. There is a 20-word limit for advertisements except as noted under category headings (special categories that are published only monthly, quarterly or bi-annually, have a 30word limit). Advertiser's name, town, phone number or name and complete address must be included within the word limit. The Market Bulletin reserves the right to edit notices. Most advertisers include a telephone number in their ads, but mailing address may be published in lieu of phone number. However, it is important that advertisers provide a phone number when submitting ads in the event Bulletin ad personnel need to contact them concerning their ads. Advertisers who do not want a telephone number printed in their ads should note this fact when submitting the notice to the Bulletin. Each notice submitted for publication must be in writing; ads cannot be taken by telephone. Notices may be submitted by U.S. mail, facsimile transmission, or via the Internet through the Market Bulletin website.
Notices sent via mail or fax must be legible, on a single sheet of paper separate from any other notice, and be accompanied by the name of the category and the name, mailing and street address (es) and telephone number of the person submitting the same. Send ads to:

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Chef Chance Awarded Golden Onion Championship Trophy
Chef Daniel Chance, executive chef of Campagnolo Restaurant + Bar in Atlanta, recently captured top honors at the 2nd annual Golden Onion professional cooking competition for his recipe "Scallop Stuffed Vidalia with Onion Pure."
Twelve lead chefs from across the state competed for the Golden Onion trophy at the official kick-off to the 36th Annual Vidalia Onion Festival, in Vidalia, Ga., which offered them a platform to display their skills and creativity. Each chef had just one hour to prepare and present a recipe featuring Vidalia onions, Georgia's official state vegetable.
From the mountains to the islands, fine dining to casual eateries, new business ventures to long-standing community mainstays, the roster of 12 chef competitors represented a cross-section of Georgia restaurants and cuisine.
An Atlanta native, Chance enjoys using fresh produce from local farms and even spent a summer as a commercial salmon fisherman learning a lot about fish.
"I am humbled and flattered, but most of all honored. My dish really captures the essence of my cooking style," Chance said. "I used the onion in four different ways and paired it with scallops, which complements the characteristics of the Vidalia onion, but still can be cooked quickly."
Second place winner Chef Brian Justice, chef and owner of Tasteful Temptations Caf in Brunswick, prepared "Vidalia Onion Poppers," stuffed with wild Georgia shrimp, sauted Vidalia onions and jalapeo peppers, and Monterey jack cheese; and served with Vidalia onions and tomato jam, roasted corn and Vidalia corn foam and

may resume. Repeated issues of noncompliance may result in suspension or revocation of the license.
In addition, Animal Protection inspectors also are utilized as equine inspectors, giving double coverage to both companion animals and horses.
The law provides for the issuance of quarantines to isolate, control, and eradicate infectious and contagious diseases. While under a quarantine, the owner must work with a veterinarian and follow their recommendations for appropriate diagnoses and treatments. The quarantine is lifted following the veterinarian's written notice to the Department that all animals are healthy and/or the threat of disease has been eliminated.
The Animal Protection Act is designed to protect all entities involved in the pet and companion animal industry -- consumers, dealers, breeders, kennel operators, animal shelter directors and, most importantly, the animals themselves. The purpose of the law is to insure the health and welfare of pet animals and to provide safeguards to the consumer.

garnished with chive oil and charred corn. "Everybody put up a dish that no one
had seen before," Justice said. "We feel pretty good with second place; we hope to come back next year and do even better."
Third place winner Chef Roberto Leoci, chef and owner of Leoci's Trattoria in Savannah, Ga., prepared "Pancetta Wrapped Vidalia Onion," stuffed with Georgia peach risotto and finished with spiced candied pecans.
"I entered Golden Onion especially because Vidalia onions are Georgia Grown," Leoci said. "It was such a great experience and I'd definitely do it again, there was such a sense of comradeship."
"I loved the cross section of chefs from all over the state," said event judge Holly Chute, executive chef of the Georgia
Governor's Mansion. "I thought their takes on highlighting the Vidalia onion were terrific. I think the Golden Onion has established itself as a serious cooking competition and will continue to attract a high level of chef competitors."
Dishes were judged on the basis of taste (50%), oral presentation (5%), visual presentation (10%), creativity (15%), overall use of Vidalia onions (15%), and following the recipe submitted during the application process (5%).
The Golden Onion competition was presented by the Vidalia Onion Festival Committee in cooperation with the Vidalia Onion Committee and the Georgia Restaurant Association.

Pollen May Not Be Popular But Essential to Food Supply
A lot of Georgians suffer from the over-abundance of pollen. But, before getting too upset, it's good to remember to be thankful for that pollen. It helps provide the food, fiber and many other products used every day.
Although many plants are selfpollinating or wind-pollinated, many more rely on insects and animals for pollination. Unfortunately for many of those pollinators, research shows that the health and populations of many pollinator species are declining.
Georgians can use their gardens and landscapes as havens for pollinators and provide valuable habitats and food sources, while helping promote the pollination of important crops.
Of the more than 250,000 flowering plants species known to exist, 90 percent require insects, birds, bats or other organisms to act as pollinators. These pollinators are important for the following reasons: they play a significant role in producing more than 150 food crops in the U.S. (including apples, almonds, peaches, soybeans and even kiwi); they pollinate the alfalfa and clover crops that feed many of our nation's meat and dairy animals; and they help produce important medicines and more than half the fats and oils in our diet.
It has been said that every third bite of food we eat comes from a plant that depends on insect pollinators. Pollinators also help maintain and increase biodiversity while creating more food for wildlife. We tend to think that plants only need sunlight, food and water to survive, but for many of our plants, pollinators are just as critical.
Insects are our most abundant pollinating organisms. There are more than 100,000 varieties of insects that serve as pollinators, including bees, moths, butterflies, beetles and even flies. Bees are one of the most regarded and known pollinators.
The bumblebee is one common native bee that is especially good for pollinating blueberries and tomatoes. The honeybee

was brought from northern Europe for the honey and wax they produce, but they play a pivotal role in pollinating our nation's crops. In the U.S., the added value to agriculture from honeybee pollination is around $15 billion annually.
Providing suitable habitats for pollinators is important because more than 50 pollinator species in the U.S. are listed as threatened or endangered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Researchers believe that a combination of habitat loss, overuse or misuse of pesticides and introduction of exotic parasites, such as the Varroa mite, are to blame for the decline in honeybee and other pollinators' populations.
Home gardeners and landscapers can provide pollinator-friendly gardens to preserve pollinator populations. Do this by adding pollinator-attracting plants from the following list:
Trees and shrubs: American beautyberry, pawpaw, redbud, yaupon, yellow poplar, Southern magnolia and sassafras.
Herbaceous perennials: purple coneflower, phlox, black-eyed Susan and goldenrod.
Vines: crossvine, trumpet creeper and American wisteria.

Delegation Attends
National Conference
Tifara Brown of Ben Hill County, Ryan Rose of Columbia County, Altimease Lowe of Camden County, and Gracie Rowe of Heard County represented Georgia 4-H at the 2013 National 4-H Conference in Washington, DC. Adult delegation advisors were Jenny Jordan of the State 4-H Staff and Miles Drummond of Tift County Strong African American Families (SAAF) Program Coordinator.
The national conference, which dates back to 1927, was held April 6-11 and is the premier youth development event for high school 4-H members who are actively engaged in 4-H programs across the U.S.
Administered by 4-H National Headquarters of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture within the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the conference serves to cultivate the next generation of leaders. During the event, the 4-H representatives participate in a variety of workshops and discussions and meet with government officials and leaders. The Georgia delegation had the chance to visit Capitol Hill and meet with legislators to share the importance of 4-H programs in Georgia and throughout the country, and how 4-H members in Georgia are making contributions to their communities.
The conference provides participants to gain invaluable knowledge, resources, and partnerships that will aid in their future as the next generation of leaders.
Georgia 4-H'ers who are interested in applying to attend the 2014 National 4-H Conference should contact their county 4H leader. For additional information, contact Jeff Buckley, State 4-H Specialist, at 706 542-4H4H or jbuckley@uga.edu.

Equine For Sale
If you have questions regarding ads in this category, call 404-651-9081.
All equine advertised in the Market Bulletin must have had a negative Coggins test within past 12 months. Negative reports are valid for 12 months from the sample date. A copy of this test report must accompany the ad each time it is submitted or the notice will be returned to the advertiser. For this reason, generalized ads (i.e., many horses, varieties to choose from, others, etc.) cannot be accepted. Buyers are urged to request verification of a negative Coggins test before purchasing any equine. Any falsification of Coggins tests can result in fines and/or suspension of advertising privileges in the Market Bulletin. This regulation also applies to equine advertised in the "At Stud" and "Boarding" categories of the quarterly equine editions.

USDA Announces Funding to Improve Electric Service

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack last month announced funding for projects to improve electric service in rural areas across 13 states.
"The partnership between USDA and rural electric utilities helps to improve service to customers and has made it easier for rural businesses to expand and create jobs," Vilsack said. The secretary said USDA will continue to fund projects that increase system reliability and will also promote the expansion of `smart grid' technology which cuts peak demands and improves system reliability.
Nearly $280 million will be provided for rural electric infrastructure, including more than $6 million in smart grid funding, which increases access to information to better manage electricity use. In addition, these funds will result in the construction of more than 1,900 miles of new or improved electric line.
Two Georgia cooperatives will receive USDA funding, contingent upon the recipient meeting the terms of the loan agreement: Irwin Electric Membership Corporation $25,000,000. Funds will be

My grandmother had a shrub that was covered in pale pink pom-poms every spring. She called it a dwarf flowering almond. I asked for one at a garden center and was told it is not recommended because there are better shrubs. I don't want a "better" shrub; I want the one my grandmother had. Can you help me?
The shrub you are describing is the pink double-flowered form of the dwarf flowering almond (Prunus glandulosa `Rosea Plena'). It does have a relatively short period of bloom and is rather inconspicuous for the rest of the year. However, we disagree with the assessment by the person you spoke with. Many of our greatest pleasures are fleeting ones but they can create memories that last a lifetime. Why dismiss a shrub whose ephemeral beauty can carry you back to the happy days of childhood at your grandmother's house? A shrub that can do that is worth seeking out and finding. Keep looking and asking. Dwarf flowering almond is still available. If you can't find it at another nursery or garden center, consider placing a "Flowers Wanted" ad in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin.

GlobalVetLINK (GVL) has launched its GoPass 6-month electronic passport system for the Georgia horse industry. The electronic six-month equine passport health certificate may be substituted for the existing paper-based, 30-day electronic Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (eCVI) health certificate.
Veterinarians in the state of Georgia are approved to issue GoPass certificates for horses entering Florida, Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. The horses may travel to all 13 states, plus Georgia, on one GoPass. The user-friendly, point and click functionality of creating an electronic GoPass certificate makes it a more efficient method than the traditional hand-written, 30-day certificate or the paper-based equine passport option.

If you are a current subscriber to GlobalVetLINK, you already have access to the GoPass certificate and will find the GoPass option on your list of available certificates. If you are not currently a GVL subscriber and would like more information on the GoPass or any other service GlobalVetLINK has to offer, including electronic EIAs, Certificates of Veterinary Inspection (eCVIs), For Sale certificates, Electronic Veterinary Feed Directives (eVFDs) or MyVetLINK.com, call 515-817-5701 or visit website www.globalvetlink.com.

you plant seeds or transplants, do not injure the bulbs while planting.
Ornamental shrubs and small trees will benefit from a light application of fertilizer this month. Use a fertilizer formulated for ornamental woody plants and apply according to package directions. You do not have to remove mulch to apply the fertilizer, but you will need to water the plants immediately after fertilizing.
If you are getting a late start in planting a spring vegetable garden, you can have pole beans, cucumbers and eggplant for harvest this summer if you plant seeds by mid-May.
Pinch out the terminal growth of annuals such as petunias, snapdragons and zinnias. This will make bushier plants and will encourage the formation of additional flower buds to extend the flowering season. Also keep the blooms pinched off of coleus. You are growing coleus for its foliage, not for its insignificant blooms.

A number of different kinds of beetles and worms will be feeding on vegetables this month. Many of these pests can be controlled with Sevin. Before purchasing pesticides, check the label information to be sure it is effective for the pests you want to control. Remember to apply the product according to label directions.
Mulch flower beds, shrubs and garden areas before hot weather arrives. This will help prevent moisture loss and will reduce high soil temperatures that limit root growth.
Early May is a good time to seed Bermuda, centipede, and carpet grass, and to start St. Augustine and Zoysia from springs or plugs.
An ideal time to fertilize azaleas is during the growth spurt that occurs once they finish flowering. Use a fertilizer formulated for azaleas. Fertilizer burn is a common cause of death for azaleas so use the proper fertilizer and don't overdo it.
May through September is a critical time for camellias and azaleas, so be sure you do not let the soil around them dry out.
If your azaleas need pruning in order to reduce their size, wait until after they bloom. Do not shear azaleas, as this will ruin their natural loose, tiered form. Prune the tallest stems at their point of origin.
If you have planted blueberry bushes this spring, remove the flowers from the plants. Although removing the flowers will eliminate your first crop of berries, the

Georgia Department of Agriculture Regulates State's Pet Industry
While most consumers may be aware
that the Georgia Department of Agriculture
regulates livestock, food products, and
agricultural inputs, many people may not
know that GDA also oversees the pet and
companion animal industry.
"In today's world, consumers treat their
pets as members of their family," said
Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture
Gary W. Black. "That being the case, we
take very seriously our role in overseeing
the health of their animals."
The Animal Protection Act, established
in 1987, safeguards consumers by ensuring
that only healthy pets enter the

Agricultural Commodity Commission for Eggs "set sail!" Better known today as the Georgia Egg Commission, the program has taken on the challenge to educate consumers as to the egg's versatility, economical price and nutritional value. In addition, funded research projects are beneficial for both the egg farmer and the consumer.
Throughout its 52-year-history, the Georgia Egg Commission has responded on the industry's behalf when questions arose; ranging from cholesterol to freerange birds. Thousands of free recipes, educational pamphlets and booklets have been developed. Instructional videos have been produced, and hundreds of programs have been presented to groups ranging from kindergartens to garden clubs.
To emphasize the importance of Georgia's egg industry to the state's economy, Gov. Nathan Deal has proclaimed the month of May 2013 as Egg Month in Georgia. When signing the proclamation, Gov. Deal noted that eggs and the poultry industry total to be the state's leading cash farm entity. This marked the 42nd year a Georgia governor has honored the state's egg farmers with a month-long observance!
What began as a backyard convenience, with hens laying a morning egg for the farmer's wife to either cook or use in bartering for other goods, is now one of Georgia's leading agricultural products. With some 9-million table egg layers in the state, these hens lay about 2.4 billion eggs
foam, and even clear plastic. Shoppers can also select brown or white shell eggs, cage free, free range, organic, vegetarian, pasteurized, and designer brands. Refrigeration at 45F. or lower assures the egg's freshness from the packing plant to your home.
Georgia's egg industry has an outstanding history, and the Georgia Egg Commission is proud to have had a part in helping to keep our good ship "Incredible" on the beam and on course!

and pot-bellied pigs. Currently, the program has about 3,000 licensed facilities statewide, ranging from municipal animal shelters to breeders who have animals which produce only a few litters a year.
Animal Protection inspectors receive over 900 complaints a year, all of which are investigated. In addition, the office responds to requests for pre-licensing inspections. All individuals who enter the pet industry must have their facility inspected before a license may be issued. Once a facility is licensed, it remains subject to routine inspections.
Animal Protection inspectors check for proper feeding, watering and sanitary conditions; the satisfactory state of repair of the facility; provisions for adequate and appropriate shelter; and the owner's maintenance of required paperwork. Each inspection varies according to the type of facility involved and the species of animals on the premises. Humane euthanasia performed by animal shelters is closely monitored to prevent improper techniques or treatment of the animals.
When inspectors encounter a facility that is not in compliance, a reasonable time frame is determined and the owner given an opportunity to bring the facility up to the expected standard level. It is only after attempts fail to bring a facility up to standard, that a "stop sale" order is issued.
"Stop sale/stop movement" orders prevent an owner from selling or moving any animals until the facility is brought up to standard. Once the corrections are made, the order is lifted and normal trade
