Georgia Grown Corn Specialty of Green Circles Farm
"We think the best products come from Georgia," said Lacey Richardson of Green Circles Farm, located in Bainbridge, Ga. Since its founding in 1975, Green Circles prides itself in being family owned and operated as well as specializing in Georgia sweet corn. From the planting to the harvesting, the family is involved every step of the way, just as it was in 1975.
Employing more than 300 at harvest time, Green Circles Farm has been a great asset to Georgia agriculture.
"Our direct market is chain, retail, and wholesale. Our sweet corn is sold all over the United States and Canada," Richardson said. Green Circles doesn't stop there, though. It even has a cattle operation along with having a cotton, peanut, soybean, and wheat crop.
Green Circles Farm also recently added solar panels on its packing house to help save energy and to "go green." Having one of the oldest packing houses in the area, Green Circles is able to hold about 40,000 boxes of corn in their cold
storage facility. Green Circles Farm also prides itself
in being a Georgia Grown member. "We label every box of sweet corn that leaves our packing house with a label that says it
is Georgia Grown. We are proud that we grow Georgia corn," Richardson said.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Advertising Guidelines Bulletin Publishes Every Other Week
All advertisements published in the Market Bulletin must relate to the farming/agricultural industry or be a part thereof; any and all item(s) submitted for sale through the BULLETIN must meet at least one of the following criteria: 1) must be produced by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation, 2) must be made by the advertiser from materials on his/her own farming operation, 3) must be owned and used by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation for a period of at least 90 days prior to offering for sale through the BULLETIN. Businesses, corporations, dealerships or other commercial enterprises are not allowed to place classified advertisements in the MARKET BULLETIN. Commercial is defined as intended for mass market; handling large quantities of product for distribution (i.e., more than normal household or farm quantities); supported by advertisement (I.e., advertisement in publications other than the BULLETIN; listed as "business" in telephone directories or "yellow pages", etc.). Other indicators include, but are not limited to, holding business licenses and holding regulatory licenses/permits/registrations. Georgia residents only may advertise in the Market Bulletin with the following exception: out-of-state residents may advertise only in the Out-of-State Wanted category. The editor has the authority to designate the length of ads and the number of ads that may be placed by a family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Currently, only one (1) notice may be placed by any family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Family unit refers to all individuals sharing the same residence, address or telephone number. Ads must be received no later than designated deadline in order to appear in the following issue. Ads submitted via our website will be scheduled automatically for the next available issue. Ads will be published only once each time submitted unless the advertiser specifies on the notice that the ad is to be published more than once. Ads may be published for two (2) consecutive issues. A new notice must be submitted if the advertiser wants the advertisement to continue more than two issues. Note: Some ad categories are published infrequently and are published only once per submission. Please check ad category headings for publication frequency prior to submitting notice. There is a 20-word limit for advertisements except as noted under category headings (special categories that are published only monthly, quarterly or bi-annually, have a 30word limit). Advertiser's name, town, phone number or name and complete address must be included within the word limit. The Market Bulletin reserves the right to edit notices. Most advertisers include a telephone number in their ads, but mailing address may be published in lieu of phone number. However, it is important that advertisers provide a phone number when submitting ads in the event Bulletin ad personnel need to contact them concerning their ads. Advertisers who do not want a telephone number printed in their ads should note this fact when submitting the notice to the Bulletin. Each notice submitted for publication must be in writing; ads cannot be taken by telephone. Notices may be submitted by U.S. mail, facsimile transmission, or via the Internet through the Market Bulletin website.
Notices sent via mail or fax must be legible, on a single sheet of paper separate from any other notice, and be accompanied by the name of the category and the name, mailing and street address (es) and telephone number of the person submitting the same. Send ads to:

Harvest Vegetables at Proper Time to Ensure Best Taste and Quality
The taste, appearance and quality of vegetables can be affected if they are not harvested at the proper stage of maturity.
Some vegetables are difficult to maintain in an acceptable fresh state for even a very short time, while other vegetables have a much longer shelf life.
Harvesting most vegetables when they are young and storing them properly will help extend their shelf life. Lowering the internal temperature also helps to slow both the respiration process and quality decline. This is one reason for harvesting vegetables early in the day before the heat from the sun has warmed them. After the harvest, most vegetables should be kept cool and out of direct sunlight until they are either processed or consumed.
While harvesting too soon may result in only a reduction in yield, harvesting too late can result in poor quality due to development of objectionable fiber and the conversion of sugars into starches. A late harvest also can cause plants to terminate, or stop producing as they complete their reproduction process. Fully-mature vegetables left on the plant also attract more disease and insect problems. The table at right gives suggestions for determining the proper stage of maturity for harvesting many vegetables.

When Storing Pesticides
Pesticides are used in a variety of farming operations and businesses, and proper storage of these chemicals is important to protect human health and the environment.
When storing pesticides, always follow government regulations and label requirements. In the absence of more specific laws and label directions, following are some basic guidelines for pesticide storage courtesy of the Weed Science Society of America:
1) Location. A separate building is preferred away from people, animals and sensitive areas. If a separate building is not possible, specify one area on the ground floor for pesticide storage. Select a location that is not prone to flooding and not on the upslope from water sources that could be
transferred promptly to a new container and affixed with the original label or with key identifying information. If the label becomes illegible for any reason, obtain a replacement label immediately from the dealer, retailer or manufacturer. Mark containers with the date of purchase and use older inventory first.
6) Inspection. Check regularly for any problems with the facility, product containers or labels and take all necessary steps to correct them promptly. Maintain a storage inspection log. Awareness of your pesticide inventory can prevent overpurchase, lengthy storage, container deterioration and the need to locate suitable disposal sites. Purchase only product quantities that you plan to use in a 12-month period.
"Pirate Flags" and "The Only Way I Know" for Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan and Eric Church.
Gold Table Sponsorships are available and include a table of 10 seats with premium seating, one night's stay for two on the night of the event at the Renaissance Waverly Hotel, a backstage reception and photographs with your guests and the performing artists, one "Field of Dreams" ticket book and a valet parking pass. Reserved tables of 10 and individual tickets also are available.
"Field of Dreams" ticket books are available for $100 each or five for $400. Only 225 of these books will be printed.

Equine For Sale
If you have questions regarding ads in this category, call 404-651-9081.
All equine advertised in the Market Bulletin must have had a negative Coggins test within past 12 months. Negative reports are valid for 12 months from the sample date. A copy of this test report must accompany the ad each time it is submitted or the notice will be returned to the advertiser. For this reason, generalized ads (i.e., many horses, varieties to choose from, others, etc.) cannot be accepted. Buyers are urged to request verification of a negative Coggins test before purchasing any equine. Any falsification of Coggins tests can result in fines and/or suspension of advertising privileges in the Market Bulletin. This regulation also applies to equine advertised in the "At Stud" and "Boarding" categories of the quarterly equine editions.

Georgia Peachy Chicken Salad
4 split chicken breasts, bone-in skin-on cup olive oil Salt and pepper cup mayonnaise 1 tablespoon tarragon leaves 1 cup diced celery 1 cup chopped Georgia peaches
Brush chicken with olive oil, sprinkle generously with salt and pepper. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes or until done, cool.
Remove chicken from bones and discard skin and bones. Cut meat into inch cubes, combine remaining ingredients in a large bowl and toss until well combined.
Serve on lettuce leaves. Variation: You can use a store bought rotisserie chicken but the way this chicken is cooked really brings out the other flavors. You can add a cup of chopped Georgia pecans.
Susan Welch Waycross, Ga.

poultry/Fowl For Sale
If you have any questions regarding ads in this category, call 404-651-9081.
Any person engaged in buying live poultry of any kind for resale, or in selling live poultry of any kind bought for the purpose of resale, must be licensed by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Possessing such a license does not by itself disqualify an individual from advertising poultry in the Market Bulletin; however, advertisers should note that all livestock (which includes poultry), must have been in possession of the advertiser for a minimum of 90 days or, in the case of chicks, ducklings, etc., must have been raised by the advertiser before offering them for sale in the Market Bulletin. Mallard ducks must be at least three generations from the wild before they can be advertised in the Market Bulletin. Advertisers must include this information in notices submitted for publication.

AG SEED FOR SALE
If you have questions regarding this category, call 404-651-9081.
Advertisers of agricultural seed must submit a current state laboratory report (not more than 9 months old) for purity, noxious weeds and germination for each seed lot advertised. A seed lot must be uniform and not exceed 400 50-lb. bags. Laboratory reports will be returned upon request. Any ads for agricultural seed submitted for publication without this documentation will not be published. Licensed seed dealers cannot advertise seed in the Market Bulletin. Certain varieties of seed are protected from propagation unless they are grown as a class of certified seed. For example, wheat seed such as Florida 304, Coker 9152, Coker 9835 and soybean seed, such as Prichard and Benning, may not be propagated for sale unless the seed has been grown as a class of certified seed. Propagation of such seed is a violation of the Plant Variety Protection Act and the Federal Seed Act. If you have questions regarding certified seed, call the Market Bulletin office or the Georgia Department of Agriculture Seed Division at (404) 656-5584.

July Garden Chores
July tends to be the peak month for weeds, insects and diseases that plague summer gardens, so be sure to continue a consistent spraying and dusting program throughout the month. When using any pesticide or herbicide, remember to always read the product label and apply according to label directions.
Remove vegetable plants when they finish producing to prevent insect and disease build-up.
Seeds of fast-growing annuals, such as zinnias, still can be planted this month, as well as transplants of petunias, marigolds and other bedding plants that still are available at local plant nurseries or garden centers. Plant the following vegetables by mid-July to allow time for them to mature before harvest: corn, lima beans, okra, pole beans and tomatoes.
If you have not mulched your garden already, do so now to get your plants ready for the hottest part of the summer. A two- to four-inch layer of organic matter will help the soil retain moisture, lower the temperature, and prevent the surface from compacting and crusting. Pine straw, spoiled hay, peanut hulls, pecan shells and shredded pine bark all make good mulch materials.

Boerma Receives National Plant Breeding Impact Award
Dr. Roger Boerma, executive director of Georgia Seed Development, has been recognized by the National Association of Plant Breeders and the Plant Breeding Coordinating Committee with one of the organizations' most prestigious tributes, the 2013 NAPB Plant Breeding Impact Award.
This award honors an individual who has made significant advancements in the field of plant breeding in the area of applied variety and/or technology development, causing a measurable impact on crop production. It also recognizes the individual's exceptional accomplishments in teaching and collaboration with others. The presentation was made during the NAPB annual meeting held June 2-5 in Tampa, Fla.
"Dr. Boerma's contributions to the field of plant breeding are immense," said Philip Simon, chairman of the NAPB Awards Panel. "Not only has he developed 25 soybean varieties, but he also was involved in the formation of organizations that will ensure that we will have new generations of plant breeders and new varieties of beneficial crops."
A nationally recognized soybean geneticist and professor emeritus at the
University of Georgia, Boerma was instrumental in developing UGA's Centers for Soybean Improvement and for Applied Genetic Technologies. He is one of the founding fathers of the Institute for Plant Breeding, Genetics and Genomics at the university.
Since 2011, Boerma has led Georgia Seed Development, an agency that produces foundation plant material and markets seed and plant materials designed to improve crop yields for growers in Georgia and across the United States.
Georgia Seed Development works closely with the University of Georgia's geneticists and plant breeders; The University of Georgia Research Foundation, which licenses the school's proprietary varieties for sale; and the Georgia Crop Inspection Association, which provides quality control for Georgia plant and seed varieties. The four groups utilize a "systems approach" to discovering, propagating, licensing and testing plant and seed materials to ensure a seamless route from university lab to wholesaler. Co-developed by Boerma, this unified research-and-propagation model brings many varieties to the market faster

The garlic I planted in my garden is now in bloom a lavender ball of flowers. Someone has told me I need to cut these off to help the plant produce bigger bulbs. Is this true? I hope not, as they are pretty and the bees like them.
Some garlic growers cut off the emerging flower stalks, also called scapes, because they feel the flowers divert strength away from the developing bulbs; however, not all growers believe this, at least with some garlic varieties. You may want to experiment to find out what is best for the garlic you are growing.
Remember, the home garden is not always about maximizing production at every turn, but is also about finding enjoyment and beauty. If you and the bees are enjoying the flowers, you can leave them be. You also can cut the flowers and put them in a flower arrangement. Some home gardeners even let the flower stalks dry and use them in dried flower arrangements.
Although yours are past this stage, some people like to cut off the scapes when they are young and tender and use them in the kitchen. They can be chopped into salads, sauted, or stir-fried with olive oil or tossed with oil, salt and seasonings and grilled. In addition, they can be chopped and sauted with butter and mixed into mashed potatoes, summer squash or other vegetables.
If you do cut off the flower stalks, be sure to cut only the stalk and not the leaves. Like daffodils and other bulbs, the leaves are manufacturing food to nourish the bulb.

than other methods. In addition to working with UGA plant
breeders, GSD also provides plant marketing services to other universities and is actively seeking additional marketing partners.
Boerma is the second recipient of the Plant Breeding Impact Award, which was established in 2013 to recognize those who contribute to the NAPB's mission to strengthen U.S. plant breeding research, technology and education.
The National Association of Plant Breeders began as an initiative of the Plant Breeding Coordinating Committee and is the advocacy group that represents plant breeders in federal, state, commercial and non-government organizations. The Plant Breeding Coordinating Committee serves as a forum regarding issues and opportunities of national and global importance to the public and private sectors of the U.S. national plant breeding effort.
Georgia Seed Development is responsible for overseeing the foundation plant material production in Georgia. GSD works closely with the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, the University of Georgia Research Foundation and the Georgia Crop Improvement Association to support research projects and bring new cultivars to market. Since 1990, GSD has annually provided significant funding to the University of Georgia for cultivar development.
