One of Georgia's Finest
My friend Carlton Moore retired from the Georgia Department of Agriculture on
May 1, 2013. Carlton served you as the Editor of the Market Bulletin for 24 years. Lewis Grizzard would have said Carlton Moore is a "Great American." I agree. Without a doubt one of Georgia's finest. As one of the more than 40,000 subscribers reading the Market Bulletin, then you, too, are Carlton's friend, for he has listened to your needs and has worked tirelessly over the years to answer your questions and to provide you with helpful, informative articles. I'm sure you will agree that Carlton is a great writer...he also is a perfectionist. He goes after stories and is meticulous in his writing, ensuring the accuracy of each detail. If ever an error occurred in the Market Bulletin, Carlton would spend (Continued on Page 11)

"We joined Georgia Grown to support other Georgia vendors. I like the program and I have seen it benefit other agribusinesses in our area."
"We hope to become more involved and network with other Georgia Grown members throughout the state," he added.
"Through our membership and involvement with the Georgia Grown program, I hope that others will realize the important role that bees play in our food industry and have a better understanding of the nutritional benefits of honey," Crosby said. "God has really blessed us, and we pray that others see Him in the way that we serve our customers."
Crosby said that he hopes that people can appreciate, just as they do in other agricultural products, that there are people that are passionate about making a quality, Georgia-grown product.

of our members facing labor shortages in the spring of 2011. We fought many other legislative and regulatory battles in 2011 and 2012 from the EPA regulations to the United States DOL farm experience rulings.
There are many more challenges that "lie before us" in 2013. As the Executive Director of GFVGA, I know first-hand that our association's spirit will continue to move the produce industry forward. We face new legislation regarding food safety, the farm bill, and immigration reform. Our growers and businesses adjust to new harvest technology, research and discovery of planting patterns and potential diseases. The agricultural industry in Georgia, the lifeblood of our state, is in a season of change.
It is this spirit which "lies within" organizational groups like GFVGA, the Georgia Department of Agriculture, the Georgia Agribusiness Council, and the Ag Workforce Coalition that drive us to speak actively on effects of this change. Author and U.S. Senator Jerry Moran once said that he was "convinced that success is not

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Advertising Guidelines Bulletin Publishes Every Other Week
All advertisements published in the Market Bulletin must relate to the farming/agricultural industry or be a part thereof; any and all item(s) submitted for sale through the BULLETIN must meet at least one of the following criteria: 1) must be produced by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation, 2) must be made by the advertiser from materials on his/her own farming operation, 3) must be owned and used by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation for a period of at least 90 days prior to offering for sale through the BULLETIN. Businesses, corporations, dealerships or other commercial enterprises are not allowed to place classified advertisements in the MARKET BULLETIN. Commercial is defined as intended for mass market; handling large quantities of product for distribution (i.e., more than normal household or farm quantities); supported by advertisement (I.e., advertisement in publications other than the BULLETIN; listed as "business" in telephone directories or "yellow pages", etc.). Other indicators include, but are not limited to, holding business licenses and holding regulatory licenses/permits/registrations. Georgia residents only may advertise in the Market Bulletin with the following exception: out-of-state residents may advertise only in the Out-of-State Wanted category. The editor has the authority to designate the length of ads and the number of ads that may be placed by a family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Currently, only one (1) notice may be placed by any family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Family unit refers to all individuals sharing the same residence, address or telephone number. Ads must be received no later than designated deadline in order to appear in the following issue. Ads submitted via our website will be scheduled automatically for the next available issue. Ads will be published only once each time submitted unless the advertiser specifies on the notice that the ad is to be published more than once. Ads may be published for two (2) consecutive issues. A new notice must be submitted if the advertiser wants the advertisement to continue more than two issues. Note: Some ad categories are published infrequently and are published only once per submission. Please check ad category headings for publication frequency prior to submitting notice. There is a 20-word limit for advertisements except as noted under category headings (special categories that are published only monthly, quarterly or bi-annually, have a 30word limit). Advertiser's name, town, phone number or name and complete address must be included within the word limit. The Market Bulletin reserves the right to edit notices. Most advertisers include a telephone number in their ads, but mailing address may be published in lieu of phone number. However, it is important that advertisers provide a phone number when submitting ads in the event Bulletin ad personnel need to contact them concerning their ads. Advertisers who do not want a telephone number printed in their ads should note this fact when submitting the notice to the Bulletin. Each notice submitted for publication must be in writing; ads cannot be taken by telephone. Notices may be submitted by U.S. mail, facsimile transmission, or via the Internet through the Market Bulletin website.
Notices sent via mail or fax must be legible, on a single sheet of paper separate from any other notice, and be accompanied by the name of the category and the name, mailing and street address (es) and telephone number of the person submitting the same. Send ads to:

Georgia FFA Sets Record Attendance at 85th Convention
A record crowd of more than 5,500
Future Farmers of America members,
advisors and guests attended the 85th
Annual Georgia FFA Convention April 25-
27, in Macon, Ga.
Members from across the state gathered
to celebrate the 2012-2013 school year by
witnessing hundreds of award
presentations, motivational speakers,
official delegate business, community
service projects, trade show and convention
concert.
The convention kicked off on Thursday,
April 25 with FFA members putting the
"Living to Serve" portion of their motto in
action. More than 250 students participated
in a Rebuilding Macon community service
project by repainting and cleaning up
homes in downtown Macon. Also, local
FFA chapters donated more than 4,000
pounds of food as part of the FFA Harvest
for America Food Drive. All proceeds from
the food drive were donated to the Middle
Georgia Community Food Bank. Fifty FFA

I saw some purple-leaved plants that resembled cabbage with yellow flowers in a flower bed at a garden center. A worker told me this was flowering kale and that they only carry them in the fall. Where can I find some now?
The plants we know as "flowering kale" or "flowering cabbage" are grown for their colorful leaves of cream and varying shades of purple. Some may have ruffled or lacy leaves. The plants can resemble giant roses or some other flower. They are edible but are grown for ornamental rather than culinary purposes. They are called "flowering" kale and cabbage to distinguish them from kales and cabbages grown strictly for eating. They are sometimes called "ornamental" kale or cabbage, a more accurate and less confusing term.
Ornamental cabbage and kale provide interesting shapes and colors in our gardens and planters through our mild winters. When warm weather comes in

development event (CDE) awards; state level CDE competition; greetings from National FFA Secretary Kalie Hall; and the official delegate business session. More than 1,000 members attended the convention concert featuring The Farm on Friday night.
On Saturday morning, day three of the convention began with the awarding of the prestigious State FFA Degree to 705 deserving students; the business meeting of the FFA Alumni Association; greetings from Rodney Miller, host of the TV Show "Small Town, Big Deal"; and the election of the 2013-2014 state FFA officer team.
When the Centreplex was empty on Saturday afternoon and the last blue jacket had headed home, the 85th Georgia FFA Convention ended with another record attendance. FFA Executive Secretary Ben Lastly said the convention continues to grow because of the commitment from all involved.
"This year's record attendance is proof of the commitment that Georgia's FFA advisors have," Lastly said. "It is inspiring to realize the work that these men and women put in to allow their students to grow through the FFA. We are blessed in Georgia."

Vidalia Onions
Weather Patterns
Reduce Crop Yields
Georgia's wildly fluctuating temperatures in this year's first four months have played havoc on the state's signature Vidalia onion crop, according to an expert with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service.
While farmers were expecting a banner year for onion yields, a warm January and February followed by a chilly March and April caused widespread cases of seed stem in the 12,000 acres of Vidalia onion fields.
Seed stem is a stress-induced condition where the center of the onion becomes hard and starts to produce a stem. The onion is still edible, but has a short shelf life, which severely limits its marketability.
In some farmers' fields, upwards of 70 to 80 percent of the onions had seed stems, said Reid Torrance, a Vidalia onion expert with the Extension Service who has been serving the Tattnall County onionproducing area since 1984.
"It's hard to pin down exactly what triggers the onions to develop seed stems," he said. "But I think these huge fluctuations in temperatures we had this year contributed to it. Anything that shocks the plant can cause it to develop a seed stem."
Soaking rains that flooded farmers' fields in March also contributed to the number of seed stems in the fields.
Adding to the problem, cooler temperatures in March also slowed the development of the onions, which need a certain number of days above a certain temperature to mature completely.
Onions with seed stems can be separated out after harvest, but farmers don't want to have to pay to harvest all of their onions if they will only be able to sell half of them.
Farmers who have seen 50 percent or more of their onions coming out of the ground with seed stems may be likely to plow their fields under and make insurance claims rather than spend the money on labor needed to cut and sort the onions.
"When you're talking about 50 to 60 percent of your crop having problems, any problems, it makes more sense (not to harvest)," Torrance said. "You're not going to make any money, but you'll lose a lot less."
Torrance estimates that onion farmers are losing a total of about one-third of their crop this year.
Despite the loss, consumers probably will not notice a lack of Vidalia onions in the grocery stores or onions of any lesser quality. They may, however, notice slightly higher prices, he said.
Onion prices were already high going into this year's Vidalia onion harvest season because of production problems in other onion producing regions.
Vidalia farmers were hoping to make good profits off those higher prices this year, but now they'll need prices to go up a little more just to break even, Torrance said.
"We hopefully will see onion prices go up as the season progresses because more and more farmers are determining that the crop is not going to be as big as we had hoped," he added.

Possessing such a license does not by itself disqualify an individual from advertising poultry in the Market Bulletin; however, advertisers should note that all livestock (which includes poultry), must have been in possession of the advertiser for a minimum of 90 days or, in the case of chicks, ducklings, etc., must have been raised by the advertiser before offering them for sale in the Market Bulletin. Mallard ducks must be at least three generations from the wild before they can be advertised in the Market Bulletin. Advertisers must include this information in notices submitted for publication.

May is Egg Month in Georgia, and this recipe is one of two created for the observance by the Georgia Egg Commission's Executive Director Jewell Hutto. "Leap Into Spring With Eggs", a free collection of easy-to-prepare recipes, can be obtained by sending a stamped, self-addressed envelope to: May Is Egg Month; c/o Georgia Egg Commission, P. O. After the recipe for Strawberry Trifle appeared in the April 17, 2013 issue, the Market Bulletin office received some requests for a recipe for homemade whipped cream. Following is a good, basic recipe:
Basic Whipped Cream
1 cup heavy cream, chilled 1/4 cup sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla
Chill a medium metal bowl and beaters. Whip cold cream until almost stiff. Add sugar and vanilla; beat until cream holds peaks.
Use as a topping for pies, cobblers or top fresh fruit with a dollop.
All recipes have been tested for accuracy by Georgia Department of Agriculture home economists unless otherwise indicated.
The Market Bulletin has received a number of requests for more "healthy" recipes (low or no sugar, low fat, etc.). Our office receives recipes for cakes, pies and other desserts, but not many for entrees or side dishes utilizing GeorgiaGrown fruits and vegetables. If you have any such recipes you would like to share with our readers, send them to: Georgia Cooking, Market Bulletin, 19 MLK Jr. Drive SW, Atlanta, GA 30334-4250. If you have questions or problems regarding recipes featured in this column, call 404-656-3682.

"It's not an issue of one product

source," Suiter said.
To help keep kudzu bug numbers
down inside your home, experts
recommend sealing all cracks an
eighth of an inch or wider and spot
spraying around all potential entry
points with an appropriately labeled
residual spray. "These steps are best
taken in the fall before the onset of
kudzu bug movement," Suiter said.
In the summer, remove kudzu if
possible and make sure all windows
are screened, doors remain closed
and door sweeps are installed on all
exterior doors. Soffit, ridge and
gable vents should also be properly
screened. In locations where
screening cannot be used, such as
around pipe penetrations, stuff steel
wool into the openings.
To gain relief from insects
covering the outside of homes, an
exterior wall application of an
insecticide spray labeled for outdoor
nuisance insect control may be
needed, Suiter said.

place the bagged insects in hot,

"They shouldn't be crushed
because they can stain indoor
surfaces, and the resulting odors are
difficult to eliminate," he said.

hours agonizing over how the error might have happened and how it may have been prevented.
Carlton has never cheated the taxpayer out of a full day's work for a full day's pay. In fact, he has added far more value than we could have ever paid him. He seldom took a vacation or sick day, and was known to take work home on the weekends and off hours working diligently to meet deadlines.
Throughout his career, Carlton worked above and beyond his duties as Editor to communicate information about the Department by preparing speech notes, brochures and op-ed articles for many Rotary Clubs, Farm-City Observances, Farm Bureau meetings and official presentations of the Department. You may have never heard Carlton speak, but Georgians have read and heard his words for over two generations
Carlton is one of the most selfless public servants I have ever known. He has always been steady, dependable and trustworthy. He has kept his hand on the plow, and his service to the grower and to the agriculture community has never wavered.
It is my hope that you will join me in thanking Carlton and in wishing him much happiness in his retirement years. If you would like to thank Carlton or share with us a story regarding Carlton or the Market Bulletin, we would appreciate your input. You may e-mail your stories to gary.black@agr.georgia.gov, post on our Facebook page, or mail them to the Georgia Department of Agriculture, 19 Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, SW, Atlanta, GA 30334.

Ga. Peanut Industry Donates Peanut Butter
The Georgia Peanut Commission and Peanut Proud recently donated 10,080 jars of peanut butter to the Second Harvest of South Georgia Food Bank, according to the Commission. The peanut butter, made with Georgia grown peanuts, will help feed families in 30 south Georgia counties.
"Second Harvest of South Georgia is so grateful not only to the Georgia Peanut Commission, but also to the farmers statewide who helped make this possible," said Eliza McCall, chief marketing officer of Second Harvest of South Georgia. "Their donation will help feed thousands of south Georgia families."
Headquartered in Valdosta, Second Harvest has locations in Albany, Douglas, and Thomasville.
"Peanut butter is a cost effective way for individuals to receive nutrients such as protein they need in their diets to stay healthy," said Armond Morris, chairman of the Georgia Peanut Commission.

homes to commercial buildings. Experts at the University of Georgia said controlling this new pest isn't as easy as spraying a pesticide.
"These are flying bugs that move from one site to another," said UGA Entomologist Dan Suiter. "You spray the ones you see today and more will come tomorrow."
Kudzu bugs, technically called Megacopta cribraria, have green to brown bodies, stipples on their wing covers and wide back ends. A member of the stinkbug
recognized easily because the name of the active ingredient ends in "-thrin," Suiter said. Examples of commonly used pyrethroids are bifenthrin, cypermethrin, lambda-cyhalothrin, cyfluthrin and permethrin. Pyrethroid products (sprays, aerosols and granulars) dominate the overthe-counter market and also are common in the professional market.
In January 2013, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency began severely restricting the use of pyrethroid sprays around structures.

"With pyrethroids, you could put all products in a bag, pull one out, and it'd be just as effective as the 10 products left in

These changes were prompted by emerging data showing that pyrethroid insecticides applied to hard surfaces end up in water where they can be toxic to fish and aquatic invertebrates, he said.
