Police & Security Now
Capitol Police Division
GBA's Police and Security Division has a new name! For years, people have referred to the division as Security or Police and Security, and never really knew whether it was one division or two. To eliminate confusion, GBA has reorganized the division to combine both sections under the newly named, Capitol Police Division.

Garden Room To Reopen
Five years after closing its doors, the Garden Room is scheduled to reopen for business in late January 1999. Included as part of the new Capitol Education Center at Georgia Plaza Park, the Garden Room will offer made-to-order sandwiches and short order items for state employees, city and county employees, and visitors, specifically school groups, to Capitol Hill.
Arden Davis, a 22 year employee of GBA who managed the Garden Room in the mid-'80's, will once again manage the facility and the 3 full-time and 5 part-time employees expected to be assigned there.
Both the kitchen and seating areas are being renovated including new serving counters, removal of the cedar ceiling in the public area, and new paint and lighting. Seating capacity for the inside dining room will be 250 with additional seating for 600 guests outside in Georgia Plaza Park. The Fireplace Room is also under renovation and will be available as a banquet facility. The park outside the Garden Room, which for many years was a popular site for entertaining, will once again be available for receptions and barbeques.
The Garden Room evolved from a simple hot dog stand erected in the early `70's to accommodate state employees, who had few choices around Capitol Hill, for lunch. In its busiest season, the Garden Room averaged $4000 per day on a lunchtime menu. The opening of Underground Atlanta in 1989, with its extensive selection of fast food operations, heavily impacted the Garden Room's operation. After struggling for several more years, the Garden Room eventually closed in June of 1994.
When it reopens, the Garden Room will serve much the same kind of fare that made it originally successful. Hamburgers, hot dogs, madeto-order sandwiches with a few additions such as fresh baked pizza, grab-n-go salads, and hand-dipped ice cream will be offered to accommodate not only state employees but the hoards of school children that descend upon Capitol Hill from January to June.

Renovation Begins Soon
on 244 Washington
Final plans and specifications are under review, competitive bids are scheduled for mid to late January 1999, and construction should begin in early March on the renovation of the 244 Washington Street Building. Completion is scheduled for March of 2000.
The Georgia Building Authority received appropriations of $4.55 million in the Supplemental FY 97 budget for renovations to this 106,000 square foot building. Tenants of the building were relocated to other GBA facilities in late 1997 and removal of hazardous materials began in early 1998.
The renovation, designed by Tippett, Clepper & Associates, Inc., will provide space for major portions of both the Court of Appeals and the Public Service Commission. The plans call for total demolition of the existing space with the exception of the Law Library and the GBA Cafeteria located on the sixth floor. While there will be some disruption to the cafeteria, it will remain in operation as well as the Law Library on the ground floor.
Tippett, Clepper & Associates spent several months with officials from the Public Service Commission and the Court of Appeals in determining their needs in the renovated space before submitting plans and specifications for review. The renovated space will convert a 1950's style office building to a modern and more open environment. Space will consist of a new hearing room for the PSC, meeting space for the judges of the Court of Appeals, and office space for both staffs.
A new four pipe HVAC system will replace the existing two pipe system installed when the building was built. For years, the HVAC system in the building has been quite a challenge for GBA personnel. The two pipe system provides either heat or air but not both at the same time. The four pipe system has the ability to provide heating and cooling at any time. The freight elevator in the building will also be modernized and a new electrical system will be installed.
The 244 Washington Street Building follows renovations completed at 254 Washington Street and the Trinity Washington Building.

GBA Recycles Office Christmas Trees
GBA will recycle Christmas trees from offices on Capitol Hill and at #2 Peachtree. To schedule a pick-up, contact Cindy Harden at 404-651-5924.
Recycling Christmas trees saves valuable and expensive landfill space, but also provides mulch for gardens and flower beds and can be made into wildlife habitats for rabbits and birds.
Don't forget to schedule a pick-up of your office Christmas tree.
Helpful Hint for Recycling Residential Christmas Trees!
The Department of Community Affairs, in conjunction with The Home Depot, Georgia-Pacific Corporation, The Davey Tree Expert Company, and WXIA-TV, is sponsoring their annual "Bring One For the Chipper" program on January 9 for recycling of home Christmas trees. DCA has enlisted the help of 120 communities in Georgia to coordinate local tree collection sites and recycle trees by chipping, mulching or using them as wildlife habitats.
For more information on the DCA "Bring One for the Chipper" tree recycling program, contact David Smith at 404-679-3144.
