Statue on Capitol Grounds

Honors Governor Ellis Arnall

A new statue now graces the grounds of Georgia's State Capitol, the tenth in the 108 year history of the Capitol. Governor Zell Miller dedicated the statue in honor of former Governor Ellis Arnall on November 24 in the southwest quadrant of the Capitol.
The statue is the result of work by the Ellis G. Arnall Tribute Commission which was established by legislation in 1993. At that time, Senators Mary Margaret Oliver, George Hooks, Arthur "Skin" Edge and Pete Robinson authored Senate Resolution 156 calling for the creation of a commission to bring about an appropriate tribute to this honorable Georgian who served as governor of Georgia from 1943 to 1947. Commission members include Chairman Jonathan Golden of Arnall, Golden and Gregory, James Williams, Chairman of SunTrust Bank, former mayor Ivan Allen, Jr. and Dr. Marvin Goldstein.

Ellis Arnall began his public service career as the youngest representative ever elected to the Georgia General Assembly followed by a stint as Attorney General. Considered one of the most progressive governors of his time, Ellis Arnall pushed for legislation and reforms that have shaped, and continue to shape, our state. During his four year tenure in office, Governor Arnall was instrumental in the writing of a new state constitution, the first since 1877. He worked to reform the state's election laws, outlawing the poll tax and giving 18 year olds the right to vote. He also pushed for reform of the state's penal system including the outlawing of chains and shackles on prisoners, outlawing whippings of

Voice Mail Power: Use the System to Your Maximum Advantage
Voice mail can stretch your time and abilities, but it can only stretch people's patience if you don't use it correctly. With more and more offices selecting voice mail for their employees, here are a few tips:
When leaving a message on voice mail: Instead of "please call," leave a
detailed message that's concise but complete. Offer a convenient time for the person to call back, or state when you plan to call again. When using your own voice mail: Always provide an option to get out of voice mail and talk to a live person. When you leave for lunch or an appointment, forward your calls directly to the phone mail system so that it will answer after only one ring. Change your message when you go on vacation or plan to be away from your desk more than a few hours. Let callers know when you'll be back and who else they can talk to in the meantime. Call yourself up and listen to your own greeting. Do you sound inviting or monotonous? Practice until your message sounds relaxed and comfortable. Follow the "Sundown rule": Whenever possible, return calls the same business day.

Holiday Housekeeping Reminders
With the holiday season around the corner, it's important to remember these helpful hints for the workplace or home: Don't tape, staple or glue decorations to walls or doors. Other
hardware such as wreath hangers and magnets are available that do not damage the wall surfaces. Make sure any food items are discarded or properly stored to avoid pest control problems. Use only UL listed extension cords and lights when decorating Christmas trees. Do not use lights or extension cords that have frayed or exposed wiring. Do not plug more than two strings of lights end to end. Unplug lights at the end of each workday. Don't leave lights on unattended. Do not use decorations that might be flammable.

Vietnam Wall Honors

Fallen Georgians

The names of 1,584 Georgians killed in the Vietnam War were added

to the State's Vietnam Memorial during a dedication ceremony held

October 30 at the Floyd Veterans

Memorial Building. The ceremony,

attended by Governor Zell Miller

(pictured right) and Speaker of the

House Thomas B. Murphy, honored

those Georgians killed in the war

as well as 41 individuals missing in

action.

Former state representative

Ben Purcell, a prisoner of war for

Tuesday, November 11 as Veterans Day in Georgia. In his remarks,

Governor Miller assured the families of soldiers who died in Vietnam

that their loved ones wouldl not be forgotten, and encouraged all

Georgians to remember the sacrifices that veterans have made to ensure

our freedoms.

Georgia's version of the Vietnam Wall features three granite slabs with

bronze tablets that list the names of fallen Georgians. This addition to

the Vietnam Memorial was paid for by private donations. The original

prisoners, establishment of vocational training for inmates and segregation of juveniles and first offenders. Of most importance, Governor Arnall personally argued before the United States Supreme Court Georgia's challenge to the discriminatory freight rates, thus allowing the south to move toward industrialization. Many believe this historic ruling was the catalyst to Georgia's economic success.
In selecting an artist for the project, the Commission enlisted the help of the International Sculpture Institute. Five artists were asked to make a presentation to the Commission on their design for the Arnall tribute. The Commission was extremely impressed with the presentations of two artists, Zenos Frudakis and Virginia Abbott Connor and decided to incorporate portions of their designs into a final design for the statue. "We were delighted to be able to work with two dedicated and talented sculptors who captured Governor Arnall's spirit and likeness with a remarkable work," said Mr. Golden.
The statue stands seven feet tall and is made of bronze. Paid for with private donations, the statue took two years to complete and will serve as a reminder of the many contributions and indelible legacy left by Governor Arnall.

Healthy Tips to Avoid Road Rage!
Are you an aggressive driver? Have you encountered aggressive drivers on the road lately? All of us who drive Atlanta roads can probably answer yes to one of these questions.
How can we protect ourselves from angry drivers and minimize our own aggressive tendencies? The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety has studied the problem and offers these suggestions:
Do:
Maintain your cool at all times.
Avoid eye contact. Steer clear of erratic drivers. Honk sparingly. Take up only one space in
parking lots. Pull over to use the car phone. Allow plenty of time for your
trip.
Don t:
Take trafic problems personally.
React to provocation. Underestimate the other
driver's capacity for mayhem. Make obscene gestures. Tailgate. Block the passing lane on
highways. Block the right-hand turn lane
on city streets. Allow your door to hit the car
parked next to you. Much of this advice can be summed up in a simple but difficult to follow rule: Drive courteously and assume other drivers' mistakes are not personal.
