OBITUARY
DEACON EDDIE L. WILLIAMS was born November 24, 1896 in Lincolnton County, Georgia, the son of the late Alex Williams and Lou Elliot. He attended public school in the County and at an early age joined the Harmony Baptist Church.
He was drafted in the U. S. Army in 1918 and spent most of his army life in England and France. His rank was Private First Class. He was discharged September, 1919 in Atlanta, Georgia.
In 1920 he joined the Wheat Street Baptist Church and became affiliated with the Sunday School, was a member of the Deacon Harris Class and served as Librarian, Assistant Teacher, and Director of the Jr. Dept. He was a member of the B.T.U. and Group 2 for a number of years and was elected to the Leader of the Group. He served with the men who ushered for 25 years as Chaplin, Chairman of the Program Committee, Vice President, President, and Chief. The methods he helped to constitute are still being used. In 1932 the Jr. Usher Board was organized, Deacon Williams was one of the organizers and served as Director until 1969. It was recommended by the Minister Rev. W. H. Borders in 1968 to the Boards of Ushers, that he would be, "The Dean of Usher ing" in Wheat Street Baptist Church. He was awarded a plaque for "sincere, loyal and efficient service" for 52 years. As a Deacon for 20 years, he was Chairman of the house Committee, Convention Committee and a member of the Valley Committee.
Deacon Williams furthered his education by attending the evening classes at David T. Howard High School Atlanta, Ga. He was employed at Spellman College for 23 years. He retired in January 1963 at which time he was awarded a plaque for "Faith ful, Honest and Sincere Service," being one of the first employees to ever be so highly honored.
In failing health, Deacon Williams decided to do as his relatives had suggested for a number of years, to come and live with some of them. The decision was left to him as to which of the children he wanted to live with, having nine to choose from. After three and a half years of prayful consideration, he came to live with his great-nephew, Eddie Williams Garnett and his good wife Emily at 2 Midway Road, White Plains, New York.
He then joined the Bethel Baptist Church where he became a member of the Deacon Board, the Deacon and Deaconess Club, the Sunday School, Bible Class and all other activities his physical strength would allow.
