Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies. She opens her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.
Her children rise up and call her blessed. Many daughters have done virtuously but thou excellest them all.
(Proverbs 31: 10, 26, 28, 29)
Barbara Ann Thurmond was born in Augusta, Georgia on March 19, 1950
to the late Mr. Ernest Thurmond and Mrs. Lillian Cade Thurmond. She departed this life on Friday, August 25, 2006.
Barbara was baptized at Tabernacle Baptist Church at an early age. She received her early education from the Richmond County School System and was a proud graduate of Lucy C. Laney High School class of 1968.
Barbara was married to Robert Johnson. This union was blessed with three loving, caring and devoted children.
She matriculated at Augusta Area Technical School where she received her Licensed Practical Nurse certification. She later continued her studies at Edna McConnell School of Nursing and Augusta State University. Barbara was employed as a neonatal ICU Nurse at the Medical College of Georgia and a Neurology nurse at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Institute, New York, New York from which she medically retired.
Barbara was involved in many community service activities which included but were not limited to: CSRA Girls Scouts, Medical College of Georgia (volunteer services), Able Disable, Inc., Walton's Option's for Independent Living, Association of Georgians with Disabilities, The Community Partnership, Black Women's Health Project, Partnership for Community Health, Beulah Grove Resource Center Advisory Board, and the HEART Program/Tools for Change.
In June 1991, she and her sister were inspired to create Blacks Against Black Crimes, Inc. The motivation for the inception of this organization was the high number of homicides in the black community. The organization continues to work towards the goal of reducing homicides in our community. Some of Blacks Against Black Crimes activities included: victim's rights advocacy, the "Stop the Killing" campaign, college scholarships and the Think Bigger programs in Jennings Homes, Gilbert Manor and Underwood Homes.
Barbara received many awards and honors for her community service. Some of the organizations that recognized her work included: Essence Magazine, the National Council of Negro Women, the Georgia Black Legislative Caucus, the Georgia House of Representatives, the State of Georgia and the City of Augusta. After being selected as the grand prize winner of the Women of Wonder Contest, Dr. Dorothy I. Height, Chairperson and President Emeriti, The National Council of Negro Women, Inc., stated, "Ms. Thurmond is a woman whose relentless fight for empowerment makes her a woman of wonder."
In 2004, Barbara's memoirs were penned in her book, "Joy In My Heart: My Journey From Hopelessness to Happiness." In a July 2004 Augusta Chronicle article, she stated "I want people to know that you can find peace and contentment regardless of their circumstances. People still don't think they can have it unless they have all those things they thought would make them happy. And that is really why I wrote it. I want to inspire."
She leaves memories that will be forever cherished in the hearts of her loved ones: her mother, Mrs. Lillian C. Thurmond, Augusta, Georgia; one son, George (Deidra) Johnson, Trenton, South Carolina; two daughters, Antoinette (Rev. Da'Henri) Thurmond, Augusta, Georgia and Aquanetta (James) Betts, Pikesville, Maryland; one brother, Darrell Thurmond, Augusta, Georgia; one sister, Earnestine (John) Covington, Augusta, Georgia; four grandchildren, Da'Henri Ramsey Thurmond, Jr., Barbara Maxine Thurmond, Evan Tanks Johnson and Bailie Tanks Johnson; one niece, Ericka (Jessie) Covington-Wright; one nephew, Ernest (Angela) Covington; and a host of cousins, other relatives and dear friends.
