O&ituary
^ r s . ^Patience "(pat" Johnson oJftomas
Mrs. Patience Johnson Thomas was bom to the late Mr. and Mrs. Gaines (Lizzie) Johnson on April 9, 1910, in Fort Mitchell, Alabama.
Mrs. Thomas was educated in the public schools of Columbus, Georgia. She received her R.N. Degree from the Columbus City Hospital School of Nursing.
While working at the hospital, she met a patient, Mr. James Alton Thomas, who became the love of her life. They married on September 15, 1931. To this union two sons were born, James Alton Thomas (deceased) and Bert Thomas. She was a devoted wife and mother who enjoyed cooking for her "boys'', and keeping a spotless house. She had concern and compassion for her fellow man.
Mrs. Thomas grew up in the church and was an active member all of her life. She and her family were members of Holsey Chapel C.M.E. Church in Columbus Georgia. Upon relocating to Augusta, Georgia, the family united with Trinity C.M.E. Church. She became active with the White Rose Circle Auxiliary where she served as treasurer for many years. She also served on the Stewardess Board and was Coordinator of the Trinity C.M.E. Church Soup Kitchen, until her illness.
She was a kind, caring, fun loving person who never met a stranger. She could be heard reciting Micah 6:8 during family dinners. She truly believed in being fair, just, and merciful and she walked humbly with her God.
During Mrs. Thomas' career, she was Head Nurse of Labor and Delivery at University Hospital where she was affectionately called "Nurse T". She trained many nurses who attended The Lamar School of Nursing and many of Augusta's OB-Gyn Specialists have given "Nurse T" credit for helping them through their internship and residency.
She retired as a head nurse from the Lenwood Division of the Veterans Administration Hospital.
Patience, Pat, Mother, Grandmother, Nurse T., Aunt Pat enjoyed serving others. She dedicated herself to "The Soup Kitchen" where at least a hundred people were fed weekly. She was honored for her dedication of service to the community by the Augusta Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.
She leaves to celebrate her life; a devoted son, Bert T. Thomas; a devoted daughter-in-law, Audrey M. Thomas; two granddaughters, Adrienne Y. Thomas (Stan) Frazier, Martinez, GA and Kimala Thomas (Fred) Johnson, Taylors, SC; three great-granddaughters, Elizabeth Faith Johnson, Taylors, SC, Ariana Yvonne Frazier and Sydney Elise Frazier, both of Martinez, GA; one great-grandson, Wesley Daniel Johnson, Taylors, SC; one brother, Edward Lewis, Detroit, Ml; special nieces, Mildred Hill-Lubin, Gainesville, FL and Thelma Cobb (John) Camp, Columbus, GA; one brother-in-law, Albert J. (Daisy) Thomas, Columbus, GA; other nieces, nephews, and devoted family friends.

A Nurse's Poem

To be a nurse is to walk with God A lon g the paths our fathers trod To soothe the aching o f human pain To faithfully serve f o r little gain
To lovingly do a kindly deed A cup o f water to one in need A tender hand on a fevered brow A word o f cheer to the living now Oh white clad nurses with hearts so true The Greatest Physician works through you.
