OBITUARY
Evelyn Scarborough Summers, bom Evelyn Campbell, on December 24, 1912 in Brooklet, Georgia to Ida Jane and George Campbell, entered into rest at 12:24 p.m. May 22, 2007, in St. Louis, Missouri.
Mrs. Summers was mother of two children; Charlene Scarborough Jamison, and George Thomas Scarborough. Mrs. Summers was preceded in death by her only son George, in 1969, a Vietnam casualty, along with the father of her children, Charles A. Scarborough in 1976.
During her lifetime she was always recognized as a lover of children, and often volunteered to baby-sit when neighbors or friends were in need.
When it was time for kindergarten for her first child (Charlene), she went to kindergarten also, (as an assistant teacher). Over the next 25 years of her life she devoted herself to teaching and providing daycare for neighborhood children; first in her kitchen, then in an addition built onto her house, to teach and care for chldren of working parents.
During those years she received many accolades from parents, neighbors, friends and "real teachers" for her timeless effort of preparing young minds for entry into the (then segregated) public school system in Augusta, Georgia.
In 1980, she was married to Julius Summers Jr. of Millen, Georgia; (who also preceded her in death in 1998). Unfortunately this move took her away from both of her parents and children she had loved and nurtured over the years. She was also missed by the Antioch Baptist Church family and the activities (Rachael Hornsby Missionary Circle and the Deconess Board) that she loved and enjoyed.
The move to the St. Louis area provided new friends and activities for a time, but overall the quality of her life was slipping away.
After a long healthy and productive life, our God chose to bring her to Himself, leaving the pain and strife behind.
We thank Him for lending her to us.
She leaves behind a daughter and son-in-law; Charlene & Howard Jamison, Jr.; one grandson, Bertrum Green; his devoted cousin (and family) Cheryl and Steve Meredith and their children; and Matt and Mildred her "adopted" son and daughter.
