Retired United States Army M aster Sergeant A dna Luke Stein was born
in Mount Enterprise, Texas to the late Isaac Stein and the late Mary Johnson Stein. As a youth he became affiliated with the Methodist Faith and honored his belief his entire life. He attended Texas Public Schools and upon graduation joined the United States Army
Mr. Stein graduated from the Army Engineer School at Fort Belvoir, Virginia in 1951, and the N C O Academy at Fort Carson, Colorado in 1956. During his military career, he reached the rank o f First Sergeant as he served as an engineer throughout the United States, Japan, Korea, Germany and Vietnam. H e retired from the United States Army September 1, 1966, after serving twenty-one years. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Army Occupation o f Japan Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and G ood Conduct Medal (50LC).
After his military service, Mr. Stein attended the University o f Georgia and South Carolina State University where he received a degree in Trade and Industrial Education. Thus began his career o f eighteen years as an educator in the Richmond County School System. Mr. Stein retired from teaching June o f 1986.
Mr. Stein was elected to the Richmond County Board o f Education in 1992, where he served in the capacities o f President and Chairman o f the Building Committee.
Although retired, Mr. Stein continued to serve the community o f Richmond County. H e was active in several community organizations including the Evening Optimist Club, Richmond County Board o f Elections, Richmond County Board o f Health, CSR A Classic, Richmond County Retired Teachers Association, and the Juneteenth Society o f Augusta. H e was also a loyal church member who served diligendy as a Sunday School Teacher and Trustee at Williams Memorial Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.
Mr. Stein was a regimented and punctual individual who was passionate in his role to improve the quality o f life for everyone. H e respected his fellow man and was faithful in his Methodist beliefs his entire life.
H e was preceded in death by his father, Isaac Stein, mother, Mary Stein, three brothers, Andrew Stein, Elijah Stein, Robert Stein and one sister, Ester H ill.
Mr. Stein was united in holy matrimony to Julia A. Stokes on May 30, 1998.
H e is survived by a devoted and loving wife, Julia A. Stein; step-son, Eric Porter, Gaithersburg, Maryland; three sisters, Marie Hill, Prairie View, Texas, Thelma Cornier, Palestine, Texas, Martha (Shelly) Ross, Beaumont, Texas; four brothers, Seth (Nancy) Stein, Mount Enterprise, Texas and Paul (Sharon) Stein, Clinton, Mississippi; motherin-law, Rosa L. Stokes, Augusta, Georgia; two brothers-in-law, Moses (Thelma) Stokes, North Augusta, South Carolina and Walter (Lucille) Stokes, Augusta, Georgia; one sister-in-law, Judith (John) Bradberry Jonesboro, Georgia; one god daughter, Artencia Taylor, Augusta, Georgia; one god son, Gerald Elam, Grovetown, Georgia; two loyal nephews, Winston Stein and Dimitri Stein, both o f Texas, along with a host o f nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
