I am home in heaven, dear ones. Oh, so happy and so bright! There is a perfect joy and beauty, in the everlasting light. All the pain and grief is over, every restless tossing passed; I am now at peace forever, safely home in heaven at last.
Evelena Strong Smith died peacefully at University Hospital on June 6, 2003. Evelena, the youngest of Clara and William Henry Strong's ten offspring, was born on October 15, 1915 in "Baconville" now know as Walton Way Extension. Be cause she was orphaned at the age of two, Evelena was raised by cousins, Nesbert and Rosie Evans. At the age of twelve, Evelena answered the call to accept Christ as her personal Savior and was baptized at Galilee Baptist Church.
In June of 1940, Evelena Strong married Charlie Smith. It was a long and happy union lasting some fifty-seven years. Charlie, Evelena's devoted husband and partner, preceded her in death.
The legacy of work and service that Sister Evelena leaves to her church family is both long and rich. She was a founding member of Good Samaritan Baptist Church who dutifully served in many capacities. Sister Evelena was a member of the Choir, served on the Usher Board, was a mem ber and Assistant Secretary of the Faithful Workers Club and President of the Senior Mission Society.
Left to remember her with love and admiration are: one sister, Beulah Oliver; two nieces, Rosa B. Williams and Ethel Williams, Augusta, GA; nine nephews, Johnnie Fred (Murdis) Vinson, Cincinnati, OH, Dan and John Walker, both of Philadelphia, PA, Pete (Mozella) Nero, Augusta, GA, Horace (Omega) Nero, Joe (Carrie) Nero, Lawrencce B. Nero, St. Petersburg, FL, George (Retha) Nero Tallahassee, FL and Charles (Lois) Walker, San Leandro, CA; and a host of great nieces and nephews, cousins, dear friends and a devoted church family.

~ Gratitude ~
We would like to express sincere appreciation for the prayers, visits and love you shared with Mrs. Evelena Smith throughout her life. We are also most grateful for the kind words and gestures of sympathy extended to our family during this time of bereavement. A special thank you to the officers and members of the Good Samaritan Baptist Church. It was on your strength she was able to lean, on your soothing words she was able to cling, and yours were the prayers that helped her endure. May God's blessings and grace shine upon you.
