* OBITUARY * On Thursday, June 28,1984, God called from labor to reward one of his most faithful servants. Rev. William H. Rountree was born on June 26,1888 to Mr. and Mrs. Moses Rountree in Augusta, Georgia. His educational training was begun at First Ward Elementary School, now known as Peter H. Craig Elementary School. His high school work was done at Paine High School, Walker Baptist Institute, and Haines Institute, from which he graduated. He con tinued his studies by taking correspondent studies from Moody Bible Institute of Chicago, Illinois. He was converted March 29,1901, and baptized the first Sunday in May of that year by Rev. Cyrus S. Wilkins. On October 6,1909, Rev. Rountree was married to Miss Nellie Mae Washington of Columbia County. To this union three children were born; Mrs. Emma R. Tolbert of Chicago, Illinois, William H. Rountree, Jr. (now deceased), and Ernest Rountree, Sr., of New York City. He and Mrs. Nellie Rountree lived happily until she departed this life on March 26,1961. Rev. Rountree served an apprenticeship in brick-masonry and plastering. He became a contractor in both fields, and served the city of Augusta as a brick-mason. For over forty years, he was keeper of Cedar Grove Cemetery, from which he retired in 1956. Rev. Rountree has served under and with many of the pastors of Thankful Baptist Church. He was ordained as a deacon by Rev. L. P. Pinckney; licensed to preach by Rev. A. G. Davis; ordained to the ministry in 1929 by Thankful Baptist Church. He served as supply pastor in 1932, and as assistant pastor for many of the other pastors who have served Thankful Baptist Church during his lifetime.
Rev. Rountree was called to the pastorage of Enoch Baptist Church where he served for a number of years. Later, he served as assistant pastor of the following churches; Springfield, Central, Macedonia, Union, St. Paul, and Antioch.
In 1975, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Georgia L. Kemp of Augusta, Georgia by Rev. N. T. Young, Sr. They shared years of love and companionship until death called him home.
Cherishing fond memories are his wife, Mrs. Georgia K. Rountree, one daughter, Mrs. Emma R. Tolbert, Chicago, Illinois; one son, Ernest G. Rountree, Sr. of New York City; one stepson, Dea. Oscar L. Kemp of Clearwater, S.C.; two daughters-in-law. Mrs. Ruby Rountree of New York City and Mrs. Rubena S. Kemp, Clearwater, S.C.; eight grandchildren, sixteen great-grand children; four great-great-grandchildren, stepchildren, nieces, nephews, godchildren, dear friends, Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Davis, and other relatives and a host of friends.
