PRAYER ~ COMMITTAL - BENEDICTION .

.

Deacon Jesse Herbert Mays was born September 14, 1911 in Fairfax South Carolina to Inez and Ranson Mays. Like the sun going down at the end of the day, the light of his day was extinguished and he entered his night of endless sleep, early Friday morning, May 13, 1988.
While in his youth, the family moved to Augusta, Georgia. Jesse was converted, baptized and fellowshipped in the Thankful Baptist Church under the pastorate of Dr. L.P. Pinkney.
His early education was in Walker Baptist Institute and he finished it in Haynes High School, Augusta, Georgia. After graduating from Paine College in Augusta, he furthered his education in Fort Valley Bible College of Fort Valley, Georgia. He later returned to Augusta to teach in Paine College.
He married the late Suddie Sibert and was blessed with six boys and one girl. In Augusta, Deacon Mays also worked as Director of the Parks Department and as an Agent for the Atlanta Life Insurance Company.
1946, Deacon Mays moved to New York City, itiet and later married Jessie Hardwick Alien. For more than twenty years he was in the employ of Mode Craft Enterprises in the Garment Center of New York City as Shipping manager and after the termination of that business, he transferred to Jonathan Logan Company, Seventh Avenue, New York City; where he remained until his retirement.
In 1953, Jesse united with the Convent Avenue Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late founder, Rev. J.W. Saunders. Because of his faith fulness, he was elected to the Deacon Board under the Pastorate of the late Rev. M.L. Wilson and he has continued to serve the church under the present Pastor, Rev. Clarence P. Grant.
Dea. Mays was a devoted and faithful member and officer of numerous organizations and clubs in the church; Sunday School teacher of Adult Class #6; Supervisor of Sanctuary Choir; Iri-State Clubs formerly known as Geor gia/Alabama Club; Chairman of Music Council; Second Vice President of Dea con Board; past Secretary of Deacon Board; New Members Orientation Committee and past President of the Mens Fellowship Society. Because of his great love for people, he served as Supervisor of Benevolent Club #75 and in the 1960s, Rev. Wilson appointed him first Chairman of the Ebony Campaign; which raised over $10,000 for the Convent Avenue Baptist Church.
He leaves to mourn his passing and he will be sadly missed by; a loving and devoted wife, Jessie; five sons, Jesse, Jr of Detroit, Michigan;
