Mrs. Janie Pearl Elizabeth Hankerson Lowe, 86, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Decem

ber 1, 2003. She was born January 17, 1917. Mrs. Lowe was the oldest daughter of Mr. and

Mrs. Benjamin Hankerson, Sr. Her parents and her three younger brothers, Benjamin, Albert,

and Thomas, preceded her in death.

She was a devoted and faithful member of Thankful Baptist Church for over 70 years, where
she served as Sunday School Teacher, Trustee and other areas of the church.

Mrs. Lowe was educated in the schools of Richmond County and was a graduate of Haines

, Normal and Industrial Institute, Class of 1934; Paine College, Class of 1938; and New York

University, Class of 1954.

She worked at Lucy Craft Laney Comprehensive High School as an English Teacher and

Educator for 45 years, where she was known as "Sister Lowe" and "Mama Lowe". She was a

member of the Haines Normal and Industrial Alumni Association, National Association of

University Women and Retired Teachers Association of Georgia.

Mrs. Lowe was married to the late Rufus J. Lowe for 54 years. To this union one daugther,

Rosa Susan Lowe, was born. Other survivors are: two sisters, Mrs. Laura H. (Leo) Baker and

Mrs. Mary H. Brathwaite, Augusta, GA; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Bernice Hankerson, Au

gusta, GA and Mrs. Miriam V. Lowe, Mt. Vernon, NY; one god-daughter, Ms. Virginia M.

Wright; two surrogate grandchildren, Courtney and Ciara Alvis; a devoted and loving adopted

daughter, Ms. Shirley Nixon, Augusta, GA and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host

of friends.
