Mrs. Blanche Leona Johnson, beloved wife of Andrew Johnson and daughter of the late Floyd and Amealean Hill Ward, was born August 3, 1905 in Columbus, Georgia. She departed this life Tues day, June 20, 1978 at the University Hospital, Augusta, Georgia after a brief illness.
She recieved her early education in the pub lic schools of Jacksonville, Florida.
On April 8, 1936 in Port Washington, L.I., New York, Blanche Leona Ward and Andrew Johnson were married. For many years, she managed her own catering service which was located at 113 Steam boat Road in Great Neck, New York. A familiar landmark to her many friends and patrons.
Eager and active in church work, she join ed the St. Paul A.M.E. Zion Church in 1939. During the ensuing years, she devoted considerable time and service to the Mount Olive Baptist Church, also located in New York. In 1969, she joined the Cumberland A.M.E. Church in Aiken v/here she was a faithful member.
Her many civic activities included member ship in the following: Zillah Court #5 Heroines of Jericho, Prince Hall Affiliated of New York City; The Manhatten Assembly #3 Order of the Golden Circle of New York City, Prince Hall Affiliated; The Honorable Past Imperial Commandress of Medina Court #11, Daughters of Isis, AEAONOMS of New York City; and past Illustrious Com mandress of the Daughters of Isis.
Upon retiring, she returned to the home town of her husband and kindled a spark in Aiken that touched, warmed, and inspired all of her many friends and admirers. Her boundless energy and enthusiasm for life shall be her legacy. Her faith in God and humanity sustained her. Now, at eternal peace, she leaves us with a final ulti matum: Rejoice my loved ones, do not weep.
Her survivors include: a faithful and loving husband, Andrew; her daughter, Mrs. Rosa Lee Herbert; In-laws; four grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and a host of friends and loved ones.
