** OF HERMAN **
He was a people person, a born social worker, a humanitarian, the essence of sincerity and dependability, the kind of individual one felt good knowing, the kind a new comer would want to meet again. That was Herman Harris! He once said that children and elderly were his two loves. How many there are who can attest to that fact! He sought relief for the weary and down-trodden. Herman was never a stranger to anyone. He mingled well in a crowd. There was something reassuring when one heard his laughter ring out.
Herman wanted the best for his family and himself. He clung to his roots in Jacksonville, Screven, and Hazelhurst. The summer sun was never to warm for him to join the Harrises and Fraziers in their annual family reunion. The feast was not his main concern: it was the people.
And his class of 1965 at Paine College! Herman saw to it that several reunions were the best. Their Silver Anniversary missed him in May as he was not able to participate.
His home and immediate family were his pride and joy: Marsha, his wife, who he wed in a beautiful Christmas ceremony in 1966; Franklin, his elder, who looks toward graduation from Hampton University; and Stephanie, a freshman at the University of South Carolina. What a great legacy! His home was his castle and he welcomed family and friends to enjoy it with him. Herman .was an excellent host.
Other survivors include: four sisters, Matilda Stokes and Geneva Lewis both ofJacksonville, Fla., Ruth Roberson of Clearwater, S.C., and Dorothy Talbert, Rochester, N.Y.; five brothers, Ernest Harris, Jr., Donald Harris, Luther Harris and Leonard Harris all of Jacksonville, Fla., and MSG Glenn Harris, Hazlehurst, Ga.; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
It is with DEEP, DEEP Sadness that we bid farewell to our friend. It is through a vail of tears that we yield him to his Maker.
"Now cracks a noble heart. Good night sweet prince: And flights of angels sing thee
To thy rest!"
