Harriett Batey Fletcher, the eldest of eight children, of Isaac and Bertha Batey, was bom on March 29, 1911, in Augusta, Georgia, where all her formative years were spent.
Her early education took place at Mauge Street Elementary. Later, she matriculated at Haines Institute and Alien University, from which she graduated.
Hers was an active life. At age 12, Harriett was baptized at
Tabernacle Baptist Church, where for 73 years she served in
various capacities. In her youth, she participated in the BYPU
and Sunday School. In later years, she held membership in the
Red Rose Auxiliary, the Gospel Chorus, and the Baptist Training
Union.

At age 18, she began teaching in a nearby county. Then in the 1930s, she joined the faculty at Charles T. Walker Elementary School as a third grade teacher. She taught there for over 40 years, until her retirement in 1973. Her professional memberships included the Georgia Association for Educators (GAE), the Georgia Education Association (GEA), the National Association for Educators (NEA), and the Richmond County Retired Teachers Association (RCTA). Civic commitment led her to join the Womens Civic Club and the Tau Gamma Delta Sorority, Inc.

She successfully combined religious service, career, and community service with a loving family life. On December 14, 1944, she married Phelix E. Fletcher. Theirs was a happy union for 45 years, until his death in 1990. To this marriage, one son, Ed, was born in 1949, and he quickly became the center of his
parents love.
She leaves to celebrate her life: one son, Edward Batey Fletcher; four sisters, Odell Mayle and George Lillian Jenkins, Augusta, Georgia; Mayme Durant, Silver Springs, Maryland; and Bertha Mapp, St. Albans, New York; one brother, Bland L. Batey, Atlanta, Georgia; four sisters-in-law and four brothers-in-law, Eddie Mae Jackson, Sarah Davis, Rosa Beckett, Vivian Fletcher, Fred Fletcher, Roy Fletcher, Mack Davis, Vary Beckett, all of Brooksville, Florida; two godchildren, Dr. Lillie B. Johnson and Felix Haley; and many beloved nieces, nephews and friends.
