FUNERAL: THURSDAY, APRIL 3, 1986 SHILOH BAPTIST CHURCH OF ARDMORE

OBITUARY
M ATTIE LUCILLE BETTS born July 25, 1932 to Roper and Emmie Wallace o f Johnston, S.C.; departed this life suddenly on March 28, 1986, a victim of a tragic automobile accident. She was one o f six daughters and two sons.
A t the tim e of Mattie's death she was enroute to her job. She had been a dedicated employee with Casual Corner Clothing Store for 12 years, located in the Landover Shopping Mall.
"Lu cille" as most o f her Shiloh church family knew her, was a devout Christian, a loving w ife, mother and a meticulous home maker. Her cheerful smile and caring concern is already missed. Educated in South Carolina, Lucille was a graduate of Voorhees C ollege in Denmark, S.C. She received Christ as her Savior at an early age at Bland Baptist Church in Johnston, S.C. She served on the usher board and sang in the choir. A fter reaching adulthood she moved north to Washington, D.C. In 1958 she met an admirer from North Carolina by the name of Leonard Betts. Unable to resist his pursuits she found herself at the wedding altar on March 27, 1960. From this union are two children, a daughter, Natalie now married to Sam Woodson; a son Eric a graduating senior at North Carolina Central University in Durham, N.C. In 1967 Leonard and Lucille purchased a home in Glenarden, Md., where they reared their children. Lucille mindful o f her covenant pledge, joined Shiloh Baptist Church of Ardmore in March of 197^ (her husband joined later). Lucille's willingness to render service resulted in her becoming a member o f the Deaconess Board and later a member of the Benevolent Com m ittee. With this committee she worked with compassion and sacrifice to help people in need. Many times Lucille spent her own money to meet an emergency and often failed to request reimbursement. She closed the last chapter of her life trying to help a fam ily in need. On Thursday, March 27, she spent the day with her husband observing 26 years of marriage. That same night she was seen by others at the church picking up a check for the fam ily in distress. A faithful servant Lucille has been, an example to be followed. She worked in a quiet manner never seeking the praise of men but "as unto the Lord" she labored.
Mourning Lucille's passing is her devoted and loving husband, Leonard, one daughter, one son and son-in-law; fiv e sisters Evelyn Scott and Mary Brincefield both of Oxon Hill Md., Valeria Daniels of Aiken, S.C., Rebecca Dukes of Johnston, S.C. and M attie Wallace o f Miami, Fla.; two brothers Freddie and Jesse Williams also o f Johnston, S.C.; a host of neices, nephews and many friends.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
We thank you, for all the lovely cards, numerous were they,
Perhaps you sang a lovely song, or sat quietly in a chair
Perhaps you sent beautiful flowers, If so, we saw them there.
Perhaps you sent or brought donations, which helped to ease financial burdens some.
Perhaps you said a prayer for us, or spoke kind words as any friend would say;
Perhaps you were not there at all, but in your thoughts shared the sorrow with us that day.
Perhaps you prepared some tasty food, or maybe furnished a car;
Perhaps you rendered a service unseen, Near at hand or from afar,
Whatever you did to console the heart, We thank you so very much, whatever the part.
