weekly meetings with a large number of children and moth-
ers, and is one of the best workers in Tennessee. She sends
the editor of Hope a kind, comforting letter every month,
which is more than most of the sisters do.

By Amanda Horton, of Curtis, Ark.

Dear Sisters of the Conference: I will tell you the good
results of the mothers pledge. It has made me remember
to read and pray twice a day with my children and to read
the Bible band lesson daily and all the Fireside books. It
has made me more prayerful and watchful in my ewery-day
life before my family, and it has made me look after my
neighbors children. I have charge of the Sunshine band
that meets once a week. We have a large number enrolled,
but only 10 who carefully study the lessons on page 8 of
Hope. Six of those have been converted. I ask you all to
pray for me that I may be more wonderfully blessed in my
work for the children. ies

Sister E. J. Bell, of Fordyce, says: We can stop A leak
in the kitchen by using the same fire with which to cook
and iron, and sometimes cook two. meals at once and not
make a fire till we are ready to use it. We can take our cold
bread and other food and bake or prepare it for another meal
if we know how. ;

Lucinda Philips, of Chowteau, Indian Territory, came that
long journey to attend the Conference. She said: I have
been reading Hope in my family since January, 92, and when
I went to the Territory I still took it and the other books,
and they have done me all the good. Pray for me.

Sister Alice Patterson, of Raleigh, N. C., reports as fol-
lows: We mothers are having mothers meetings at our
homes every Tuesday night, but it is a very hard matter to
get them to read daily with their children, or to get them to
get the books, but I keep on trying. I have fifteen children
who meet me every Saturday at 4 p. m., at my house. I teach -
them Peep of Day and the lessons in Hope, and always
sing Are you a Christian, little friend? (by Rev. C. r:

Jones). O, Sister Moore, how much we need you and want
you in North Carolina.

Mary O'Neal, of Little Rock, for more than a year has
held a meeting with children in her own home every week,
and has also gone from house to house among the poor, and
held mothers meetings. This sister has the same house-
keeping cares that most women have. She is only one of the
honorable women of Little Rock that have been doing the
same work for the last two years. Much of the time there

calling of this roll of mothers and their reports be a blessing

to the whole church ?
Mothers Certificate,

This certificate is given at close of each years course of
study. In order that we may know who has been faithful, we
require a quarterly report from the secretary of the church
to which the mother reports monthly. Only in this way can
we keep a faithful record of our pupils. If the church does
not receive the reports, then the letter can be written in the
name of the band of praying mothers, or the mother can
write a personal letter. In this way we will all clasp hands,
though we are scattered over all the States in the Union.

A mothers conference will be held annually in every State
where there are a sufficient number of Fireside pupils.

_ You see, dear sisters, the plan is very simple; only get the
books and begin the study, and report to the church if the
accept it; if not, no matter, keep on with your studies and

your mother duties, God is watching and your reward is sure.

Bible Bands.

The Bible Band is oz the Fireside School. It is only part.
of the duty of the members to read the Bible daily, as the
band is required to do, but besides this the mother iste:
quired to read certain other books with her children at home,
and to pray with them. The Bible Band will lead up to the
Fireside School. It has proven to be a great means by
which young and old, converted and unconverted, have be-
come interested in the study of the Bible, therefore we put
into our minutes the Constitution of the Bible Bands.

The object of the organization is: First, to study and
commit to memory the word of God for our own edification
and comfort. Second, to teach it to others, a Bird, to
supply the destitute with Bibles.

A Bible Band is a band of Bible readers who daily read a

_ certain lesson and commit to memory at least one brand new
verse each week, and meet once a week to review and discuss
what they have learned. They have a certain lesson for each |
day and must read it dazly. This is what a Bible Band
means. Hope has the lesson for every day in the year care-
fully prepared, with the memory verse selected,

All who belong to the band should take this paper so that
all can read the same lesson. You need help in the study of
the Bible. When Philip asked the eunuch, in Acts 8:30,
Understandest thou what thou readest ? he answered,
Flow can I, except some man should guide me ?

Watered Lilies.

We have this treasure in corthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God
and not of us. (2 Cor. 1v. 7.)
The Master stood in His garden,
Amid the lilies fair,
Which His own right hand had pinted
And trained with tendrest care;

He looked at their snowy blossoms,
_ Andmarked with observant eye,
That His flowers were sadly drooping,
For their leaves were parched and dry.

My lilies need to be watered,
The heavenly Master said; 4
~ Wherein shall I draw it for them,
And raise each drooping head.

Close to His feet in the pathway,
Empty and frail and small,

An earthen vessel was lying,
Which seemed of no use at all.

But the Master saw and raised it
From the dust in which it lay,

And smiled as He gently whispered,
This shall do My work to-day.

It is but an earthen vessel,
But it lay so close to Me;
It is small, but it is empty

That 1s all it needs to be.

So t6 the fountain He took it,
And filled it full to the brim;
How glad was the earthen vessel

To be of some use to Him!

He poured forth-the living water
Over His lilies fair,

Until the vessel was empty,
And again He filled it there.

His own hand had drawn the water
Which refreshed the thirsty Flowrs
But He used the earthen vessel
To carry the living showrs.

Close would I keep to the Master,
Empty would I remain,

And perhaps some day He may use me ;
To water Ifis flowrs again. | 6 oe
