The 1985-86 Yearbook Staff takes pride in presenting this edition of Reflections.
The creation of a yearbook is the result of long hours of hard work and a great deal of dedication. It is very difficulttocapture memories in print-inblackand white, but wefeelthatthis is a very successful attempt to do so.

A New Year
We have begun another school year. But for us, Spelman represents more than school, more than books and classes. Spelman is a place that becomes an integral part of us every year. We seek escape each summer, but we discover that we are too deeply embedded in the spirit of Spelman to truly
escape. Summer phone bills prove our ties to each other as friendships grow out of the common Spelman experience. There is something here that will stay with us forever something from which we will never extricate our
selves.

Point Of No Return
We know that we have reached a point in our lives from which we will never return. Our Spelman experience will impact our lives in such a waythat we will never be the way we were before we came here. We will broaden our minds, our potential, strive for higher goals and create extraordinaryfriendships.Althoughwehave inasensereachedapointofno return, we realize that the best is yet to come.

In The Spirit
...
The start of a new year means new classes, new faces, new experiences. But a new year at Spelman also means the continuation of a legacy. Freshmen and new students enter Spelman's gates for the first time. During Freshman Week the legacy of sisterhood and achievement is passed on to the newest Spelmanites. We make them welcome and instill in them the spirit of sisterhood the spirit of black womanhood the spirit of intellectual achievement the spirit of success the spirit of Spelman ...

A very important faction of the Spelman College community is the ADMINISTRATION, FACULTY and STAFF. They guide us, challenge us, and createnew ideasand possibilitiesfor us to consider. Although we are not constantly with our teachers, deans and advisors, werealizethattheyhavesignificantimpactonourlives. It islargelybecauseof them that we are prepared to do our best in the years to come

I'M GOING TO THAT LAND
I am on my way to that fair land To the home beyond the sky, I will live for Jesus every day'Til I reach that home on high.I will work and toil and pray to Him
To the one who o'er me wept,
And ask his power to guide me rightAnd aid my faltering step.I will try to win lost souls to Him As I travel on the way,
I will tell them of my Saviour's love And the coming judgement day. I'm going to that beautiful land To the home so far away, Where I'll live with Jesus evermore
In that fair eternal day.

Psalms 23
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul:
He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me;
thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil;
my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
We're finally here, the point where there is no turning back. What lies ahead may be medicalschool, ajob, graduateschool, marriage, andevenafamily. Inessence,we've only begun to lay the foundation for our destiny. In the end, the best is yet to come.

Phyllis Paul
The Men of Morehouse selected Phyllis Paul to represent them as First Attendant to Miss Maroon and White during the 1985-86 school year. Phyllis reigned during her senior year and is from Houston, Texas. She appeared at many Morehouse activities including those surrounding Freshman Week and of course the Homecoming events. Her outgoing nature enhanced her inter-relations with the Morehouse student body and SGA and her year as a member of the Maroon and White Court was an experience that Phyllis will long remember.
As First Attendant, Phyllis escorts the lit tle First attendant of the Little Miss Ma roon and White Court into Coronation.
Kellie O'Neal was Morehouse's choice for Second Attendant to Miss
Maroon and White. Also in her Senior year, Kellie is from Indianapolis,Indiana. Kellie was seen at the competition step show and at the many Homecoming activities, including the Homecoming Ball. Kellie's
enthusiasm as a Morehouse Tiger cheerleader carried over into her reign as Second Attendant. The events surrounding her time spent as a member of the Maroon and White Court have special memories
for Kellie.

and Activities
The Homecoming Parade set off the activities for the Homecoming Game. All of the Courts, including state courts, club courts, class courts and the Maroon & White Court were in
the parade. The Morehouse SGA drove the cars on which the courts were presented, as can be seen in the photo with the Morehouse
cheerleaders and Adam Smith. Spelman and Morehouse worked together to make another Homecoming a success.

He met with the members of the SGA on a regular basis and was on good terms with all of the SGA members as well as many other Spelmanites as well. During his reign, he was always ready to contribute to the campus and activities. He was friendly and always a gentle

activities sponsored by the SGA, as well as donating her talents when needed. She
was
instrumental in improving Spelman/Morehouse relations by willingly meeting with
Scott and other members of the Morehouse student body. Bonita gave energy,
enthusiasm and poise to the position of Miss Blue and White during the year 1985-86.

BETTER RELATIONS
As Mr. and Miss Blue and White, Scott Young and Bonita Billingsley made an effort to improve Spelman-Morehouse relations. They were active in attending and participating in several functions sponsored by both schools, including a special reception planned specifically to discuss methods to improve relations between the two schools. Scott was very visible on Spelman's campus and represented Morehouse well as he contributed to
several SSGA social activities. The enthusiasm that Scott and Bonita com bined and demonstrated throughout their reign was a true reflection of brother/sister spirit.
Even the cake at the reception reflects the message of good relations.

MALIKIA: BLACK ROYALTY The Coronation of Nefertiti and
Akhenaton. The beauty of the ancient royalty recreated in the Blue and White Court. The mystery of the pyramids and the riddle of the sphinx ... the glitter of sapphires and diamonds ... the sleekness of ebony and alabaster ...
The theme for the Blue and White Coronation was chosen in an effort to recreate the extraordinary elegance of our ancient heri tage. The focus of many SSGA activities was AFRICA and this festive
event was no
exception. The African motif was enhanced by African
dance, music and costumes. The audience was enthralled as the creative genius of SGA Social Co-Chairpersons, Donna and Kenyatta, transported us to the exoticism of Africa.

STUDENT LIFE
At Spelman, there are extra-curricular activities to satisfy every individual's needs. These include clubs, organizations, and activities geared toward the physical, mental and spiritual interests. These activities build pride, self-awareness, cultural awareness
and social awareness. Often, it is in this aspect of Spelman that we see the best of ourselves and each other.

A Reflection
If you had an opportunityto reflect on yourfour years at Spelman, oneofthe highlightswould be Freshman Week. We all remember placement tests in the dimly lit Howe Hall, the hard chairs in Giles Old Library, the Summer Science Program students who knew allthe ropes, the roomthat didn't meet yourexpectations, the cot in temporary housing, the unbearable August heat, the fallen curls as a result of the humidity, the Brother/Sister Tea, the Fashion/Talent Show, the Dating Game, the Atlanta University Center Block Party, the State Rally, the learning of "Don't give me no words, no words, don't give me no phrase, no phrase, just give

one
of, seeing another person with the same sharp haircut, not seeing any guys untili three days after you're settled in, catchingthe Marta to Lenox Square, discovering happy hour, the infamous West End Mall, and the cuisine featured at Alma Upshaw's Dining Hall. A Sensation Of Warmth
When attempting to assess the character of the Right Reverend Bishop Desmond Tutu, one often thinks of words and phrases that in no way can accurately describe such a warm person. On the National Holiday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday, the Right Reverend Bishop Desmond Tutu wrapped his arms around the Spelman community and gave us a hug that warmed our hearts, lifted our spirits, and broadened our knowledge as to the plight of our sisters and brothers in South Africa. The Right Reverend Bishop Desmond
Tutu was successful in making everyone in Sisters' Chapel realize that the only thing that really matters in regards to a person is his or her character, not their color. The Spelman College Community was happy to present the Right Reverend Bishop Desmond Tutu with a donationofmorethan$14,000.00. A Salute To Greatness
"Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday ..." The first national observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday occured on January 20, 1986. A week of activities commemorated this national holiday for the Atlanta University Center, such as: the Youth Rally, the King Center Presentation, a special presentation tribute, a Salute to Greatness Dinner, and a march down Peachtree Street, in down
town Atlanta, on January 20, 1986 in his honor. Spelman College was individually honored to have Desmond Tutu, Nelson and Winnie Mandela's daughter, and Secretary of Education, William Bennett, speak at convocation in Sisters Chapel. These scheduled activities made the week of January 13-20 a memorable and worthy tribute to the late, great Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Divestment
The question of what to do with stock in companies doing business in South Africa became a major question for the Board of Trustees here at Spelman College. Closing Out Another Year
Books have been closed, rooms have been packed into trunks, and the chalk dust has settled. Thus ends another chapter in Spelman's history. For some of us, this was our first year at Spelman, for some of us this was our last. For every one of us, this year, as does every year, marks a unique
end.
Freshmen have just finished their first step of the Spelman experience.Seniors are preparing to take their first step out into the world. But, this is the point of no return. Decisions must be made, whether we are
Freshmen or Seniors.

What's Next?
What will Happen? What will I do when I leave Spelman? The countless times that we have asked these questions of ourselves and others is astronomical.
We leave Spelman for hometowns, internships, graduate schools. If we are to return, to find ourselves flooded with relief for a summer rest. If we have graduated, the relief is there, but it is mingled with sadness. This place ...
this school that is so much more than a school has left indelible images. This is truly a point of no return. Nothing will transport us back in time to a more secure and childlike state. Now we must make our own decisions to determine our own individual and collective futures. What will happen is up to
us. The best is within us. It is our choice to bring it to the surface or allow it to lie dormant and die. The best is yet to come but it is within our power
to make it happen.

Commencement 1986
The Commencement Exercises for Spelman College were held on Sunday,
May 18th, at 10:00 a.m. Ms. Faye Wattleton, President of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America gave the address, as well as receiving an
Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane letters. Also receiving honorarydegrees were the Poet Laureate of Illinois, Gwendolyn Brooks, and the family expert and star of one of television's most popular sit-coms, William H. Cosby, or Bill Cosby.
For over a century, Spelman has been a strength in the Black community. In celebration of that reputation and of the Black family's longevity, Spelmanchoose as its Commencement theme for 1986, "Black family in Focus: An
Educated Eye on Academics, Humor, Strengths, Planning, Spirituality and Eloquence.''

The Best Is Yet To Come
Spelman closes out another year in resplendence and the passing of the legacy continues. Those of us who leave her gates will go out into the world with the Spirit of Spelman thriving in our hearts and minds. Those who remain
will immerse ourselves deeper into that Spirit. We will learn the spirit of
success and personal achievement. But the successes of Spelman women have not come easily. We know
that faith and perseverance have nourished our achievement for over a century. We believe that this faith will carry us through. And in the Spirit of Spelman we believe in ourselves and in each other. And if we just believe ... the best is yet to come.

Reflections Staff
Few know the hardships of putting the events of an entire year between these blue bindings. We hope that those of you who share this artwork will cherish it as you will the memories of the past year. We hope that you will frequently take it from the shelf, dust it off and relieve some of the special moments of 1986.

Assistant Editor
As Assistant Editor and Photo Editor of the 1986 edition of sincerely hope that the hard wortccind efforts of the staff are enjoyed by all who view this, what I feel is an excellent issue of Spelman's yearbook, It is often stated that the production of a yearbook is a hard and demanding task, This year I found that to be true. However, the task is also an enjoyable one, Creativity, cooperation and diligence come together in an atmosphere that is sometimes tense and sometimes relaxed, The best of the staff surfaces in trying times and a bond is formed as everyone works to meet deadlines. I have enjoyed working with the staff this year and look forward to the success of Reflections in the future

The job of putting together a complete yearbook requires a lot of patience, long hours and dedication. It is
a
task that should not be taken lightly. There are many
misconceptions when one thinks of joining the yearbook
staff. It is rarely just fun and games.
The job of Classes Editor was a complex one but the job was made easier as I worked with eager members of the staff. This book was put together to recapture the memories of the 1986 school year. As a yearbook staff, we feel that we did a good job. Each yearbook is subject to criticism; therefore, we expect some with this book, it is my hope that some of the critical energy will turn into creative energy to contribute to Reflections in
the future.

Puttingtogetherayearbook isadifficultjobonethatrequireslonghoursofhardwork anddedication. It also requires a good, cooperative, creative team. Those who contribut ed their time and effort are appreciated assets to the staff of Reflections.
Reflectionsaresynonymouswithmemoriesandthisbook isanefforttocreate acollage of memories from the 1986 school year. This year's staff has shown dedication in complet ing what I feel is one of the most unique books produced at Spelman. I am somewhat biased in my opinion of the book, but that bias is the result of long hours spent creatingeach and every page and the sense of satisfaction that accompanied the completion of
the book.
