- A black and white photograph of the exterior of the Knowles Industrial Building at Atlanta University. The Knowles Industrial Building was built in 1884 for the use of the mechanical department. The building included carpenter's benches, wood-turning lathes, a forge room, and a room for mechanical drawing. Atlanta University opened on October 13, 1869. The University offered training for African American students of all ages including kindergarten, grade school, normal, industrial, academy and college.
