- Dr. Thayer was elected President of the University at a meeting of the Board of Trustees on June 9, 1881. Black and white photograph of Edward O. Thayer. On June 9, 1881, Mr. Thayer was appointed as President of Clark University. He served as president until 1890. In 1869 Clark College was founded by the Freedman's Aid Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church. It was named for Bishop Davis Wasgatt Clark, who was the first President of the Freedman's Aid Society and became Bishop in 1864. In 1877, Clark College was chartered as Clark University. In 1988 Clark University and Atlanta University combined to form the Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, Georgia.
