Description:
Black and white photograph of Reverend Robert E. Bisbee. Rev. Bisbee served as the seventh president of Clark University, from 1877 to 1881. Under his leadership the college was chartered as a university and the school acquired 450 acres of land in South Atlanta for a new campus. In 1869 Clark College was founded by the Freedman's Aid Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church. It was named for Bishop Davis Wasgatt Clark, who was the first President of the Freedman's Aid Society and became Bishop in 1864. In 1877, Clark College was chartered as Clark University. In 1988 Clark University and Atlanta University combined to form the Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, Georgia.
