- Description:
- This video recording, dated October 10, 2000, consists of a presentation by Dr. Asa G. Hilliard, III to the Parent/Teacher Association at Mt. Olive Elementary School in East Point, Georgia. Dr. Hilliard begins the presentation with four short video clips from the Every Child Can Succeed video series, interspersing them with his commentary. The video clips focus on the Vann School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; the Charles Rice School in Dallas, Texas; the Marcus Garvey School in Los Angeles, California; and the Pratt School in Oakland, California. Hilliard argues that these schools are evidence of the possibility of effectively teaching all children regardless of their socio-economic or family backgrounds. He also praises Cascade Elementary School in Atlanta, Georgia, for high achievement in mathematics and reading. Hilliard closes with an admonition to form study groups for filling in gaps in the curriculum, particularly in relation to the history of African American, Latino, and Native American people.
