- Description:
- This research was conducted to explore what factors are essential in creating a living-learning environment on Historically Black Colleges and Universities' (HBCU) campuses that promote sense of belonging and make students want to return year to year. The purpose of this qualitative interpretive phenomenological study is to examine the lived experiences of HBCU students who reside in residential housing communities to uncover their views of the institutional practices that are essential to cultivating a sense of belonging and ultimately positively impacting retention outcomes. Students that represent marginalized identities have a difficult time finding a sense of belonging in campus housing on HBCU campuses and it affects their sense of belonging, retention, and ultimately, their matriculation. The researcher looked at sense of belonging, Black identity, housing style format preferences, relationships with housing staff, and resources available to improve students' perception of sense of belonging and increase retention at institutions of higher education, specifically at HBCUs. Three data collection methods were used for this study, two of which are qualitative and the third is a document analysis. The first two data collection methods are interviews and reflective journaling. The researcher chose a convenience sample of 6 students from the upper-class students' residence halls, each representing specific demographic qualifiers to produce a robust sample of students that are reflective of the overall campus population. After conducting the data collection, the researcher analyzed the data to identify themes and patterns representing in the participants' responses regarding their views of the institutional practices that are essential to cultivating a sense of belonging and ultimately positively impacting retention outcomes.
