- Description:
- This parallel mixed-methods study examined the opportunities and misfortunes of African American women leaders in higher education. This research focused on administrative leaders, their firsthand experiences, and the ways in which these experiences impact their professional careers. This study used a mixed-methods approach to utilize two forms of data collection-interviews and a survey. The qualitative portion focused on African American women administrative leaders from two institutions, one HBCU and one PWI, during the 2022-2023 academic school year. The quantitative portion of the study focused on African American women in non-leadership roles and their first-hand experiences in becoming lead administrators in higher education. The independent variable was professional career advancement; the dependent variables were opportunities, workplace (institutional) barriers, personal lives (barriers), cultural constraints, and personal sacrifices. Qualitatively, the researcher examined the independent and dependent variables in connection with the encounters and experiences African American women administrative leaders have had in higher education and if that has impacted the advancement of their careers. Quantitatively, the researcher analyzed the results to determine if African American women in non-leadership roles are also positively and negatively impacted by the variables.
