- Description:
- This study examined the lived experiences of 10 college students who encountered homelessness at some junction during their studies at a select public university located in the Southeastern region of the United States. The researcher defined college student homelessness as a temporary state of living in which one encounters homelessness during their college matriculation and are forced to succumb to unforeseen living environments and alternatives, all the while showing resilience through persistence. This research study was based on the premise that higher education is not always obtainable to all persons, particularly those facing homelessness, which is steadily on the rise among college students in the United States. The researcher conducted interviews with 10 college students who had experienced temporary homelessness previously at a select public university located in the Southeastern region of the United States. The researcher found that college students who were either poor, financially insecure, housing insecure, or a minority, usually faced homelessness at a higher rate than their White college counterparts. Five themes were identified as outcomes of this study. They consisted of (a) unemployed or surviving on minimum wages, (b) lack of aid to meet the financial payments for tuition, (c) unawareness of Homelessness Program provided by the University, (d) greatest needs among students of color, and (e) the resilience nature of the participants in the study. The conclusions drawn from the findings suggest a need for institutional administrators at the institution where the study was conducted to invest in a more robust strategic plan to lessen the rise of homelessness among this student demographic and maintain student retention.
