- The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological research study was to identify the factors such as recruitment, collegiality, microaggressions, opportunities for advancement, and gender discrimination and their influence on Black women faculty at one public former predominantly White institution (PWI) and one public historically Black college or university (HBCU). The findings revealed that all independent variables except for recruitment influenced the persistence of the Black women faculty in this study. The culture and climate of the institution'once recruited and/or hired'also influenced their retention in academia. The researcher recommended diversity, equity, and inclusion actions for higher education practice, policy, and research, recommendations for Black women faculty, and future research on the lived experiences of Black women in higher education.
