- Description:
- This research focuses on the stereotypes presented about Black women's hair. A symbolic interactionist approach is used to explain how the media portrayals of Black natural hairstyles affect Black women, impacting how they see themselves along with how they are viewed and treated by others. A content analysis of Netflix movies released in 2021 comprising of Black female main or supporting characters was conducted to examine the stereotypes presented about Black women's hair in current media. Eighteen Black female characters from twelve films released on Netflix in 2021 were analyzed based on hair type and personality traits. A historical analysis of Black women's hair journey was also presented to determine how current trends align or diverge from past ideologies. The findings suggest that although most of the characters analyzed wore natural hair, there was a distinction between how various natural hair types were portrayed.
