- Description:
- The purpose of this mixed methods study was to examine the experiences of students with disabilities as they transition to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Specifically, the study sought to illuminate the alignment, provision, and awareness of services available to students with disabilities at HBCUs and how the perception of the utilization of such services impacts the social and academic inclusion of students. The study explored the impact of inclusion for students with disabilities in the areas of recruitment, retention, and persistence (graduation) through semistructured interviews of students, faculty, and Office of Inclusion staff in addition to surveys. The major findings of the study indicated that students were unlikely to disclose academic and social barriers to accessing services and needed additional support when transitioning from P-12 to higher education. The study indicated a need for Offices of Students With Disabilities (OSD) to provide more support as students navigate the independence of higher education in order to find social and academic success and improve graduation and retention rates.
