- Description:
- This study examined the impact of emotional intelligence on Black male first-year students on their college experience and how that impact varies with students' academic performance, self-confidence, study skills, faculty-student relationship, sense of belonging, and social integration. The study was conducted at a public HBCU in the Midwestern region of the United States and utilized a quantitative methodology. A total of 134 Black male first-year freshmen students were enrolled during the academic year 2020-2021 and 49 students participated in the study, for a 36% response rate. The results indicate high levels of self-confidence, and moderate levels for sense of belonging, study skills, faculty-student relationships and social integration. Emotional intelligence is significantly related with study skills, sense of belonging, and social integration. It is not related to academic performance of quality of student-faculty relationships. The findings from the present study have implications for colleges and universities as they design their first-year seminars and mentoring programs.
