- Description:
- Institutions of higher learning struggle to engage Black males in ways that promote high performance. As well, research and society continue to validate that the problem exists. Institutions of higher learning have struggled to find effective strategies to promote Black male students' engagement to improve academic outcomes. Higher learning institutions are not and will not be equipped to greet and support Black males until they understand the Black male's struggle and implement realistic methods of instruction and services to assist their real-life circumstances. It is imperative that higher education institutions invest in cultural transformation initiatives to meet the evolving needs of Black males and society. The purpose of this study was to explore alternatives and implement strategies to meet the individual needs of Black males attending postsecondary institutions. Participants of the study were educators and students located at colleges in the western and eastern regions of the United States. Methods of inquiry for this qualitative narrative case study included the use of interviews and a peer focus group. The data were collected and analyzed to identify consistent themes. Instructional strategies that engage the learner and demonstrate respect for cultural differences were introduced as a basis to develop the questions within the protocols. Relevant to this research, Black male success was defined according to the experiences and perspectives of Black male participants. The notion of critical race theory was examined through the experiences shared. The findings revealed the extent that culturally relevant teaching strategies empower Black males, positively influencing their self-esteem and self-efficacy, and contributing to their intentions to continue matriculation and retention to achieve academic and personal success.
