- Description:
- The objective of this research was to examine the different factors that contribute to the academic success of African American males who are attending a private, 4-year historically Black institution who possess a Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 3.0. The targeted educational institution's honors program director was contacted for an initial list of students who can participate in the study, the predetermined criteria are as follows: 1) Black, 2) male, 3) senior with 3.0 or greater grade point average and enrolled full time during the Fall 2021 semester. The researcher then conducted a random selection of students from the list that was obtained from the program director. During the Fall 2021 semester, there were 17 African American Black male students who are classified as Seniors, 12 were eligible to participate, 5 randomly selected students were individually interviewed virtually. The researcher interviewed the participants to obtain information about their lived experiences in successfully enrolling, retaining, and making it towards graduation, through the use of a series of open-ended interview questions. The results of the thematic analysis of the participant's responses to the interview suggest that mentorship programs such as the honors program that was analyzed in this case can lead to significant improvements in Black males' academic outcomes.
