- Description:
- This mixed-methodology research study examined the influence of self-efficacy, mentoring programs, academic advisement, and financial aid on the persistence of first- year African-American male students at a private Historically Black College or University (HBCU) located in the southeastern United States. The data collection consisted of a survey and interviews that gained insights into students’ perspectives and experiences related to their first year experience. The findings indicated that self-efficacy, mentoring programs, academic advisement, and financial aid had an impact on students’ decision to return. The results also revealed that among all the factors, self-efficacy and financial aid played the most critical part in African-American males’ decision to continue to their sophomore year. After analyzing the results, the researcher found that there were some areas of improvements at HBCUs. These areas include implementing innovative teaching strategies to boost students’ confidence, improving academic and personal support programs, implementing a formal mentoring program for first-year students, adopting a proactive approach to academic advisement, and providing more funding and information on how to obtain funding to cover the students’ financial obligations.
