- Description:
- This mixed methods study examined the influence of self-efficacy, academic advisement, campus climate, perceived family obligations, and cost of attendance on the persistence of African American male nontraditional students at a technical college located in the southeastern United States. The data collection consisted of a survey and interviews, which provided further insights into the perspectives of African American male nontraditional students' experiences that affect their ability to graduate. The findings reveal that each of the examined factors played a significant role in the participants' academic success. Based on the results, the researcher recommends that technical colleges, as well as traditional colleges and universities, need to improve in the following areas in order to retain nontraditional students, namely African American males: (a) create an academic advisement process that is informative and flexible, (b) establish child care alternatives for students who are parents, (c) pair students with faculty mentors to support their intellectual curiosity and build their personal and academic confidence, and (d) increase diversity efforts in student activity planning.
