- Description:
- This study examines possible factors that contribute to a first-generation college student's persistence once enrolling in college. These factors include, but are not limited to, teacher-student relationship quality (TSRQ), peer-to-peer interactions, as well as current TRiO programs that support the first-generation population. This study discovers factors that present an effective way to ensure student persistence. Throughout the course of history, the demographics of the college student have become more and more diverse. Whether gender, race, or age, it is imperative for the institution of higher education to stay modern by incorporating the necessary resources to accommodate all students. This study uses surveys and interviews to determine what those needs are in regard to student persistence for first-generation college students. The conclusions drawn from the findings suggest that first-generation college students perceive that TRiO support programs aided in their decision to persist to the next level of their undergraduate career. This was revealed through the collection of 148 surveys. It was also concluded by student affairs professionals that not only are TRiO support programs significant, there was also some significance in peer-to-peer interactions and teacher-student relationship quality. The researcher was able to infer this due to the interview testimony from those professionals. Throughout this study, the reader will find supporting data that can aid institutions of higher education in continuing to support first-generation college students.
