- This study aimed to explore the impact of a TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) program intended to serve first-generation students on student retention and examine how this impact differs with student characteristics. A total of 21 students (sophomores, juniors, and seniors) who were enrolled in the TRIO Student Support Services program were involved in the quantitative data analysis, and six students (2 sophomores, 2 juniors, and 2 seniors) were interviewed for the qualitative data analysis. Specifically, this study examined the impact of a TRIO SSS program designed to serve first-generation students on student retention and how that impact varies with students’ time management skills, study skills, motivation, relationship with program staff, and self-efficacy. The results indicate that time management skills, relationship with TRIO staff, and self-efficacy played a significant impact on student retention for the participants in the TRIO SSS program. The results have implications for TRIO SSS leaders, including the need for staff to have compassion for students, implement transformative activities and workshops, establish peer mentoring programs, and offer additional student support for an inclusive environment.
