- Description:
- African-American female educators can be considered the hidden strength of a school. They oftentimes are tasked with students and roles that require a unique set of challenges and skills to maneuver. In most cases, these educators are given difficult situations to navigate on a daily basis, with little recognition of the job that they are doing. This, in addition to the common United States educational challenges such as overcrowded classrooms, low pay, and lack of promotion are enough to make these educators pursue teaching internationally. This research focused on select African-American females who selected South Korea as their international professional work site in the field of education. Due to the fact that there was minimal research on this population of educators, this study examined the dispositions, level of job satisfaction and sense of well-being of those educators who chose to leave the United States and teach internationally in South Korea. This exploratory research study was conducted with select participants in South Korea through the use of interviews and narratives, which revealed that there were certain characteristics that these educators possess that enabled them to succeed in this international setting. Furthermore, the conclusions shed light on this population of educators’ dispositions, level of job satisfaction and sense of well-being.
