- Description:
- During and after chattel slavery African Americans actively participated in movements towards freedom through literacy. Considering the severe enforcement of antebellum anti-literacy laws and manifestations of racial hostilities, post-Civil War African Americans forged constructive self-reliant pathways to acquire knowledge with remarkable success. This study is based on the premise that the black education movement during and after emancipation is linked to a black tradition of resistance. The work uses a case analysis of nineteenth-century educator Lucy C. Laney to explore her educational activism in relation to previous modes of resistance in education. The conclusions drawn from the findings suggest that Laney’s contributions were a continuation of earlier efforts of those who sought to lift as they climbed in literacy.
