- The purpose of this qualitative study was to determine which leadership characteristics, competencies, traits, and other aspects of leadership are deemed to be essential for current and future historically black colleges and universities (HBCU). college presidents. The significance of the study provides valuable new research on HBCUs in general and the type of HBCU president in particular that is needed in the 21st century. The results of the study will be advantageous to future college presidents of all colleges who face the major challenges of providing higher educational equity to marginalized populations. There is a critical need to build leadership capacity in higher education to address the future expected and unexpected changes and challenges that will lead to the long-term sustainability and success of HBCUs. This study provides illuminating insight into the adaptive expertise and characteristics needed for successful leadership to move HBCUs through the 21st century prepared to face the known as well as unknown challenges.
