- Description:
- Every institution of higher learning has a responsibility to serve all students who are financially enrolled in their institution. One of these responsibilities is centered on students who have learning disabilities. By law, every Office of Student Disabilities must follow policies and procedures that govern the mandated protection for all students who fall under the population of students with disabilities. This study explored the experiences and awareness of students, faculty, and staff within the Office of Student Disabilities at four historically black colleges and universities located in the Southeastern United States. The researcher of this study showed data regarding learning disabilities among students in colleges and universities. While sharing this information, the researcher informed readers about a lesser-known learning disability called dyscalculia. Dyscalculia focuses on the factor of being unable to perform certain levels of mathematical functions. Where most people are familiar with disabilities such as dyslexia and dysgraphia, dyscalculia seemed to be in the shadows whereas many live with these disabilities but go unnoticed. The study was based on the premise that would reveal the awareness and experience of dyscalculia among students, faculty, and staff. With this in mind, the researcher hoped that the study made an impact on institutions to make learning disabilities an intentional topic so that it helps to change the culture of academia across the nation and beyond.
