- Description:
- This study examined factors that contribute to the academic success of African- American males. The study examines first-generation African-American males and their transition into the collegiate environment. Face-to-face interviews were conducted and from these engagements several themes were discovered. The study design shows the factors that institutions employ to prepare and address barriers that can and often hinder academic success from an institutional perspective. The study was conducted from an anti-deficit approach and allowed for the exploration of nontraditional factors that lead and support academic success of African-American male students at a private HBCU.
