- Description:
- This study examines gender roles in the Church of God in Christ (COGIC) relevant to women's ability/inability to pastoring churches, being president of auxiliary departments, and being referred to as preachers. Also, this research analyzes the cultural and biblical ideologies that limit the role of women in COGIC; explores the factors that impact gender inequality in COGIC; evaluates the organizational structure of COGIC; and investigates how women view their roles in COGIC. This study was based on the premise that cultural, traditional, social, and biblical views concerning gender affect the roles women fulfill in the COGIC. A descriptive analysis was used to investigate gender roles in COGIC. The question under investigation is: What are the women's perception of their roles? The execution of the methodology consisted of 164 females affiliated with COGIC from 16 states in America who completed the Self-Perception of Gender Roles in the COGIC (SPGRCOGIC). The researcher found that more women are taking a liberal stance about female pastors and preachers, in that, respondents believed that the Bible neither teaches against female preachers nor female pastors. Respondents reported 23 different rationales against female pastors and preachers, while they chose seven different factors that impede their growth in the ministry. The conclusion drawn from the findings suggests that now is the time for COGIC women to be treated fairly and/or equally represented in the general assembly, in the ministry, and in the auxiliary departments.
