- Description:
- This research effort focused on developing a new catalyst system for the asymmetric addition of trimethylsilyl cyanide to aldehydes based upon the in situ complexation of titanium chloride to chiral transition metal salen complexes. A series of chiral salen ligands were prepared by the condensation of salicylaldehyde derivatives with eanatiomerically pure 1,2-diaminocyclohexane. The chiral salen ligands were treated with transition metal salts to give the corresponding chiral transition metal salen complexes. These new chiral transition metal complexes were treated in situ with titanium chloride to give the corresponding bimetallic complexes that were then examined for the potential to catalyze enantioselective cynation of aldehydes. The reactions were studied as a function of metal(II) species, ligand substitution, and reaction.
